This applies as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € per month, or 603 € for a minijob (§ 10 SGB V). The age limit can only be extended for periods of statutory service or a voluntary service, not for study periods. After that, your cover as a student continues, with the amounts calculated above. From your 23rd birthday, the childless care surcharge also applies, which is 5.13 € more per month. More is in the glossary entry Family insurance during studies.

Student insurance ends at 30

Compulsory student insurance ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (§ 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V). The age limit is decisive. An extension is possible if the type of training or personal reasons justify going beyond the limit, for example in a second educational pathway or for child-rearing. Details are in Health insurance as a student over 30 and Studying at 30.

When student insurance ends, you usually remain a voluntary member of BKK Werra-Meißner, unless you prove other cover. A minimum assessment base then applies. The minimum contribution for 2026 is calculated as follows:

  3. Long-term care insurance: 47.46 € (3.6 %) with a child, 55.37 € (4.2 %) without children.
  4. Total: 289.37 € with a child, 297.28 € without children.

The minimum contribution assumes low income. With higher income, the contribution is based on that income, up to the contribution assessment ceiling of 5,812.50 € per month.
