AI Tools for Students in Germany 2026: Offers Compared

AI tools for students come with very different terms in 2026: some providers offer discounts or time-limited free periods, others point to university licences, and some have no student offer at all. This overview summarises the offers that providers list on their own pages as of October 2026 and links to a detail page for each (the detail pages are in German).

• A student offer is not the norm. Several large providers have no discount for individuals, for example Midjourney, Runway, Suno or Replit.
• Promotions are often time-limited or regional. The ChatGPT offer applies only to eligible US universities according to the provider and is not intended for Germany.
• Verification usually runs through your university email or a service such as SheerID and is often renewed after 12 months.
• First check whether your university provides a campus licence (Campuslizenz). That can make a discount unnecessary.
• Whether and how you may use AI in term papers and theses is set by your university’s examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) and its guidelines.

Which AI tools offer something for students?

The table summarises what the provider pages say. If a provider does not list a price, the table refers to its pricing page. US dollar prices come from the providers and are not converted into euros.

Which offers do not apply to Germany or have expired?

The best-known example is ChatGPT: OpenAI’s back-to-school offer requires an eligible university in the United States and is time-limited until 31 October 2026. The help page names no offer for Germany. For Microsoft’s 50 percent discount, the US page refers to university email addresses; whether there is a German page with the same terms is shown on Microsoft’s offer page. Apple’s education promotion with a gift card ended on 22 October 2026 (see the German-language overview of software and apps, in German).

Rule of thumb: if a page says “US students only” or “selected countries”, the offer does not automatically apply to your university. A discount code from a forum or third-party site does not replace checking the provider’s page.

How does student verification work?

The proof required differs by provider. These routes are mentioned most often:

• A university email address that the provider recognises automatically (for example Notion, Consensus, or Otter.ai with a .edu address).
• A verification service such as SheerID, for example for the Google offer or Windsurf. A login through your university portal or a certificate of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) usually works.
• GitHub Education for Copilot Student and the Student Developer Pack, with verified student status.
• A recommendation through the university or library, as with Scite.

Note that many offers re-check your status regularly; for Google the help page says usually every 12 months. Plan for re-verification, otherwise the subscription falls back to the regular price.

What applies when you use AI for your studies?

Cheap access says nothing about whether you may use a tool in assessed work. That is decided by your university’s examination regulations and the instructions of the person teaching the course. • Data protection: do not enter personal data of third parties or unpublished research data into public AI services.
• Checking outputs: AI systems invent sources and figures. You are responsible for every statement in your work.
• Disclosure: where AI is allowed, it is usually declared. Your university sets how.

What happens when the offer ends?

Time-limited periods move to the regular price, often automatically. For Google AI Plus it is 12 months, for ElevenLabs three months, for Windsurf up to 12 consecutive months. Put the end date in your calendar and check before expiry whether you still need the tool. After your studies you lose student status. Adobe states 34.99 euros per month for Creative Cloud Pro after the first year; other providers state no follow-on price. In such cases, read the provider’s terms before booking.

Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper for students in Germany?

According to OpenAI’s help page, the back-to-school offer applies only to eligible universities in the United States. The page names no offer for Germany. Check OpenAI’s help page before booking because promotions change.

Do Claude or Perplexity give student discounts?

For Claude there is no discount for individual students; the education offer is aimed at universities. Perplexity offers an Education plan with student verification; the app shows the price under Upgrade.

Do I need a university email address?

For most offers, yes, or proof such as a certificate of enrolment. Some providers explicitly require a .edu address. German university addresses are not accepted by every service.

May I use AI tools in my thesis?

That depends on your university’s examination regulations and your supervisor’s instructions. Agree on use before you start and keep it in writing.

Are free plans an alternative to a student subscription?

Often yes. Elicit, Suno, Runway, Otter.ai and Gamma have free plans with limits. For occasional use that is often enough; with regular use the limits are quickly reached.
