Google Colab for students is a question that often comes up in computer science, statistics and data science courses. Colab is a notebook environment in the browser where you run Python code, sometimes with a graphics processor (in German: Grafikprozessor). We could not reliably verify in October 2026 whether a student offer exists and what it looks like.
Short answer: A check of the pricing page suggested a student offer for Colab, but the details were not readable. We therefore did not verify prices, duration or verification. Check the provider’s page directly before you decide. Google Cloud education credits are separate and not part of our check. Last updated: October 2026, offers change often.
The most important points
- The pricing page mentions a student offer, but we could not read the conditions.
- We have not verified euro or dollar prices for students, so we give no figures.
- Duration and verification are not verified.
- Google Cloud offers education credits, which run separately from Colab and were not checked here.
- Your university is a sensible first contact for computing resources.
What is included in Colab?
Colab can be used in a basic version in the browser. Paid tiers usually extend computing time and hardware. Which limits apply in which tariff is stated on the pricing page. We could not read these limits reliably and therefore give no numbers.
For courses it matters that your notebooks run on servers that are not run by your university. This concerns above all the data you upload. The section on data protection covers this.
Offer at a glance
| Service | Regular price | Student price | Duration | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colab Pro and Pro+ (paid tiers) | not verified | student offer suggested, conditions not verified | not verified | not verified |
| Google Cloud education credits | not checked | not checked | not checked | not checked |
How to activate the offer
Because the conditions are not verified, we describe only the route you can check yourself.
- Open the Colab sign-up page and read the full price overview.
- Sign in with your Google account. A university account may play a role, check this yourself.
- Look for the section for students and read the verification before you pay.
- Watch the billing and the cancellation date in your account.
Data protection and university rules
Do not put personal data or unpublished research data into a notebook. This also applies to training data from surveys. The article Data protection for AI tools in study explains how to classify this. For AI help with code, the article Programming with AI in study: when Copilot helps and when it does not is useful.
What happens after your studies?
A student offer usually depends on your status, but this is not verified for Google. Before you graduate, check whether your account and your notebooks remain available. How to handle deadlines and licences after you leave the university is covered in When student status ends: subscriptions, licences and deadlines.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Colab free for students?
To our knowledge a basic version can be used, but we did not verify the limits and conditions. Whether a student offer is free of charge must be checked on the provider’s page.
Do I need proof of student status?
We did not verify the verification. Read the requirements on the pricing page. How verification procedures generally work is explained in Student verification explained.
Is Colab Pro the same as the student offer?
Our check cannot say this with certainty. Compare the features of the tiers and the conditions for students on the pricing page before you pay.
Can my university provide computing time?
It may, but this must be clarified. Ask the computing centre or your student council. Alternatively, a cloud credit may help, which is presented in Cloud credits for students: Azure, AWS, Google Cloud.
What to do now
- Check the Colab sign-up page and the section for students yourself.
- Ask the computing centre of your university whether computing time or cloud credits are available.
- Clarify the data protection questions for your data before you upload anything.
- Decide on a paid tier only with verified conditions.
What to clarify before you upload data
Write down three questions before you create an account: How much computing time is included in the free version? Which hardware can you use? Does the student condition continue after graduation? The answers are in the provider’s tariff overview, not in marketing texts.
Shared notebooks for group projects need a clear folder structure. Agree in advance who may upload which data. For personal data from surveys, the rule is strict: it does not belong in a notebook outside your university before the data protection questions are settled.
