Studying in Paderborn combines a compact university with a semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) that has shifted noticeably within a single semester. This guide shows the current fee, the change since the summer semester 2026 and a documented dormitory price.

Key points
- Winter semester 2026/27: 351.15 euros, of which 226.80 euros is the semester ticket (64.6 percent).
- Compared with the summer semester 2026 (325.50 euros), that is an increase of 25.65 euros. The ticket alone rose by 27.40 euros.
- The re-registration deadline for the winter semester ended on 15 September 2026. The page names no late fee; it refers to the deregistration procedure.
- A single apartment in the Alois-Fuchs-Weg dormitory costs 363 euros a month. The entry names neither a date nor whether the rent is warm or cold.
- The AStA page states a total for the winter semester 2025/26 that does not match its own items.
What does the semester cost at the University of Paderborn?
The university’s English page on re-registration and fees lists the winter semester 2026/27 with an itemisation and a total. The page was last changed on 5 August 2026. For comparison, the AStA page lists the fees of several semesters.
| Item | Summer semester 2026 (AStA page) | Winter semester 2026/27 (university) |
|---|---|---|
| Social contribution of the student services | 110.00 euros | 110.00 euros |
| Germany semester ticket | 199.40 euros | 226.80 euros |
| AStA contribution | 14.00 euros | 12.50 euros |
| Culture ticket | 2.10 euros | 1.85 euros |
| Total | 325.50 euros | 351.15 euros |
The items add up to the stated totals. Notably, the AStA contribution and the culture ticket fall while the ticket share rises. The pages do not give a reason. Assumption: spread over six months, 351.15 euros is about 58.53 euros a month.
Which contradictions are there in the figures?
The AStA page states a total of 323.80 euros for the winter semester 2025/26. Its own items (12.50, plus 2.10, plus 199.40, plus 110.00 euros) add up to 324.00 euros. We calculate with the winter semester 2026/27 of the university and set the previous year aside. The AStA page also carries no publication date, so we use it here only as a comparison figure.
What does housing cost in Paderborn?
For Paderborn we have one documented dormitory price. The DAAD dormitory finder lists the Alois-Fuchs-Weg dormitory of the student services organisation Paderborn with a furnished single apartment of about 23 square metres for 363 euros a month, with kitchenette and private bathroom. The deposit is two months’ basic rent. The entry does not say whether the rent is warm or cold, or when it was created. We have not checked other houses.
Worked example (assumption): 363 euros rent plus about 58.53 euros of semester fee per month comes to 421.53 euros, before insurance and food. If the rent is a cold rent, utilities come on top.
Which health insurance applies to students in Paderborn?
The rules are the same nationwide. Family insurance (Familienversicherung) applies during training up to your 25th birthday, as long as your total income does not exceed 565 euros a month (2026), or 603 euros for a mini-job (Minijob) (§ 10 SGB V). Otherwise, student health insurance (Krankenversicherung der Studierenden) applies.
| Component | Calculation | Amount per month |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance with average additional contribution | (10.22% + 2.9%) of 855 euros | 112.18 euros |
| Long-term care insurance | 3.6% or 4.2% of 855 euros | 30.78 or 35.91 euros |
| Total (assumption: additional contribution 2.9%) | Up to 22, or from 23 without a child | 142.96 or 148.09 euros |
Values as of 1 January 2026 (GKV-Spitzenverband), contribution assessment base under § 236 SGB V.
If you are considering private cover, know the three-month exemption window from the start of the obligation (§ 8 SGB V). Premiums for private health insurance (PKV) depend on age, health check and tariff, and can rise over the years. A personal assessment is offered by Academycon (in German).
How do BAföG (federal training assistance) and the semester fee relate?
BAföG covers at most 855 euros a month for students living away from home up to age 24, made up of a 475 euro basic amount and a 380 euro housing allowance. From 25 to 29 years it is up to 992 euros (as of January 2026, Deutsches Studierendenwerk). The semester fee is not a BAföG need item. It burdens your budget regardless of the support.
