Teacher training (Lehramtsreferendariat) in Saxony-Anhalt is the preparatory service you complete after your degree, before you teach in a school. You receive trainee pay (Anwärterbezüge), and your health insurance depends on your status. This guide shows how the pay is built up, what civil servant health aid means and how to clarify your insurance.

Short answer: In teacher training in Saxony-Anhalt, trainees (Anwärterinnen und Anwärter) are paid under sections 51 to 55 of the state pay act (LBesG LSA). The finance ministry of Saxony-Anhalt confirms this in its information dated 31 March 2026. The basic trainee amount is set out in annexes 4 to 8 to the act. According to the dbb pay table (status April 2026, subject to promulgation), it is 1,744.00 euros in A 13 and 1,712.28 euros in A 12. Whether you are eligible for civil servant health aid depends on your status. Last updated: October 2026.

  • The basic trainee amount (Anwärtergrundbetrag) is set out in annexes 4 to 8 to the act. The amount itself is not in the ministry letter.
  • Whether you are eligible for civil servant health aid depends on your civil servant status. Check your appointment documents.
  • We did not take a rate for civil servant health aid in Saxony-Anhalt from a verified source. Ask the Beihilfe office.
  • In 2026 the statutory health insurance general contribution rate is 14.6 percent, with an average additional contribution of 2.9 percent.

How is your trainee pay built up?

Trainee pay follows the state pay act. The finance ministry states that trainees also receive pay under sections 51 to 55 of the act. The basic trainee amount appears in annexes 4 to 8. Family supplements (Familienzuschläge) are added if you are married or have children. We have not checked an official table with this status, so please check the annexes.

To check the figures yourself, go in three steps. First, find your pay group in your papers. Second, find the matching annex to the act. Third, compare both with the pay notice from your employer. If you see a difference, clarify it at once, not at the end of the month.

Are you eligible for civil servant health aid?

Civil servant health aid (Beihilfe) is only available to civil servants who are eligible. It covers a share of medical costs, and the rest is usually covered by private health insurance. The state law on Beihilfe sets the share in Saxony-Anhalt. We did not find verified rates in our sources, so refer to the Beihilfe office. The basics are explained in Civil Servant Health Aid: Rates and How It Works.

The finance ministry describes the legal position in civil service in its information sheet. Your own appointment papers, however, show which rule applies to you.

How do you cover the rest of your medical costs?

If you are not eligible for Beihilfe, your health insurance follows the usual rules. You then choose between statutory and private cover, as far as your situation allows. The contribution to statutory health insurance depends on your income, while the additional contribution depends on your fund. The GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet (as of 1 January 2026, in German) gives a general rate of 14.6 percent and an average additional contribution of 2.9 percent. Your fund may charge a different additional rate.

With a private policy, check the tariff for benefits, deductible and how contributions develop over time. For a personal assessment, Academycon offers advice (in German): So arbeiten wir.

What changes with a family?

Family supplements depend on your marital status and on your children. They increase your pay, but they are paid only when the conditions are met. Submit the proof early, so that the payment does not have to be corrected later. Beihilfe can also work differently for dependants, so ask the Beihilfe office before you choose a tariff for your family.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Christmas bonus in teacher training in Saxony-Anhalt?

We cannot answer that safely from the sources we checked. Ask your employer whether special payments are made. A rule in Saxony does not automatically apply in Saxony-Anhalt.

Do I have to be statutorily insured?

That depends on your status. As a civil servant, the principle of self-provision usually applies, and you can then choose between statutory and private cover. Your appointment papers show which rule applies to you.

What is the basic trainee amount?

The basic trainee amount is the basic pay for trainees. It appears in the annexes to the state pay act. Family supplements may be added on top of it.

Am I automatically a civil servant during training?

Not necessarily in every case. Check your appointment documents. The form of your employment decides whether Beihilfe and which insurance rules apply.

Whom do I ask when figures are missing?

The pay office of your employer and the Landesschulamt Sachsen-Anhalt can give you binding information. Ask in writing, so that you have proof if something changes later.

Next steps

  1. Check your appointment confirmation for civil servant status and pay group.
  2. Find the current table in the annexes to the LBesG LSA, or ask the Landesschulamt for the valid version.
  3. Clarify with the Beihilfe office whether you are eligible and which rate applies.
  4. Compare statutory and private offers with your actual needs before you sign anything.
