What is the semester fee?
The semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) is a payment that students make to their university with every re-enrolment. It usually finances services that are not paid from the general university budget, such as offers of the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk), the work of the student body (Studierendenschaft) or a semester ticket. Each university sets the exact composition itself.
The semester fee does not replace health insurance or pension contributions. Those are separate payments, even though all of them fall due during your studies.
