Anyone who studies a teaching degree in Saxony and completes the practical training at the teacher training seminar receives trainee pay. How much of it remains at the end of the month depends on the basic trainee pay, family allowances and the insurance you choose. This guide places the figures of the Saxon State Office for Schools and Education (LaSuB) in context and shows how to check the current version.

What does this mean for your monthly budget?
The basic trainee pay is the starting point, not your net pay. Taxes and social contributions take a considerable share, and family allowances change the result. For a net calculation use the income tax calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (bmf-steuerrechner.de). Your own estimates are easily wrong, especially with allowances and family factors.
Which rules apply to trainee pay in Saxony?
Trainee pay is regulated in the Saxon Civil Service Pay Act (SächsBesG). Sections 70 to 75 govern the pay of trainees, and the basic amount is in section 72. The amounts themselves are in Annex 9 to section 72 subsection 1. The version in the Saxon state law portal carries the date 11 July 2023. Ask the LaSuB whether later adjustments apply, because amounts change with pay adjustments.
How are you insured in Saxony?
As a civil servant on probation you are usually entitled to Beihilfe. The question is then whether private health insurance that supplements Beihilfe suits you, or whether you stay in statutory insurance. The LaSuB presentation contains nothing on Beihilfe or health insurance, so you need to clarify these points separately.
- With PKV and Beihilfe you usually pay only part of the costs yourself, and your tariff covers the rest. The premium depends on age, tariff and a health check.
- With statutory insurance there is no health check. The contribution depends on contributory income, and the employer usually contributes.
- Private insurers often accept pre-existing conditions only with surcharges or exclusions. This matters especially during training.

Capital-forming benefits (vermögenswirksame Leistungen) are payments from the employer that flow into a savings contract. The amount is available from the LaSuB. Whether you receive them depends on your application, so ask when you start.
