Study Abroad in Mexico: Insurance, Visa, Costs 2026

Study abroad in Mexico: no EHIC cover, visa-free stay up to 180 days, study visa via the Embassy in Berlin, costs with sourced facts, October 2026.

Study abroad in Mexico: The European Health Insurance Card does not apply there, and we found no social security agreement with Mexico that covers health insurance. Without a visa you can stay up to 180 days for tourism, transit or business, but the Federal Foreign Office does not name study as a purpose for visa-free entry. Contact the Mexican Embassy in Berlin before you travel. Tuition fees and living costs are not sourced.

Mexico is neither an EU member state nor part of the European Economic Area. The Federal Foreign Office also issues graded warnings for several states, so the choice of your study location matters.

How are you insured in Mexico?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreement

According to the FAQ of the European Commission, the European Health Insurance Card applies in the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Mexico is not named there, so the EU rules on treatment under the conditions of the host country do not apply.

We have not found a social security agreement with Mexico that covers health insurance, so we name none. Ask your health insurance fund to confirm its arrangement for Mexico in writing. The basics of private cover are explained in the guide PKV für Studierende im Nicht-EU-Ausland (in German).

Advance payment and repatriation cover

The Federal Foreign Office strongly advises travel health and repatriation insurance for the whole stay. Treatment and medication costs usually have to be paid on the spot. According to the office, private hospitals and doctors generally demand advance payment. Background information is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and work and travel (in German).

Vaccinations and medical preparation

No vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany. The Federal Foreign Office names the standard STIKO vaccinations with sufficient measles protection, and hepatitis A. For long stays or special exposure, dengue, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies are added. Clarify your vaccination status with your doctor early.

Do you need a visa for Mexico?

For tourism, transit or business purposes you need no visa, as long as your stay does not exceed 180 days. Tourists may not do paid work. Accepted documents are passport, provisional passport and children’s passport. The identity card and the provisional identity card are not sufficient. The passport must be valid for at least six months on entry.

The Federal Foreign Office does not name study explicitly. For longer stays, gainful employment or similar purposes it advises contacting the Mexican Embassy in Berlin before departure. A residence permit for another purpose cannot be applied for after entry. We therefore do not state a rule for your study stay, because we have no official source for it. The Embassy can tell you authoritatively whether you need a visa.

When entering by land, a tourist card is required, which the page describes as subject to a fee, without naming the amount. On arrival by air the tourist card is not needed.

The Federal Foreign Office issues a partial travel warning for Mexico. It strongly advises against Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Zacatecas and the border region with the USA for stays beyond the necessary minimum. It advises against parts of Jalisco, Guanajuato south-west of federal road 45D and the border region with Guatemala in Chiapas. Several regions have exceptions for air access, for example Acapulco, Morelia or the Guadalajara metropolitan area (status of the page 25 October 2026).

According to the Federal Foreign Office, the biggest threat to internal security comes from organised crime, and violent crimes and robberies are widespread. After security operations in Jalisco in February 2026, unrest occurred that has since calmed down, but the situation remains dynamic.

What does a study abroad semester in Mexico cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your home university. We do not name a general amount, because we have no official figure that we can cite. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept a place.

Living costs

We do not state a sourced monthly amount for living costs. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students and for the costs of dormitory places. Without an official or university source we do not calculate a total.

Funding: Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

Mexico appears in the Erasmus+ programme guide as a Latin American third country that is not associated with the programme and can take part only in certain actions. More on this in the guide Planning Erasmus and a semester abroad (in German).

According to the flyer of the German Student Services Organisation (status January 2026), Auslands-BAföG is possible for Mexico. Mexico falls under the region America without Canada and the USA, and the responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Bremen, telephone 0421/2201-0. Outside the EU and Switzerland, funding covers at most two semesters, and at least one year of study in Germany is required beforehand. A study abroad period lasts at least six months. All details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: requirements, amounts and supplements (in German).

How to prepare before you leave
