What does Salus BKK cost as a student?

The Salus BKK student page states the monthly amounts for 2026. We have recalculated the totals with the statutory formula:

  1. Assessment basis: 855.00 € a month (BAföG needs rate).
  2. Base contribution: 10.22 % of 855.00 € gives 87.38 €.
  3. Additional contribution: 3.29 % of 855.00 € gives 28.13 €.
  4. Health insurance in total: 115.51 €. This figure also appears on the fund’s page.
  5. Care insurance: 30.78 € up to age 23, for parents, and from 23 with a child. 35.91 € from 23 without children (the fund page lists both amounts).

What applies at Salus BKK from 25 and from 30?

Family insurance until 25

Until your 25th birthday you can be covered free of charge through a parent who is a member of a statutory fund. The condition is total income of at most 565 € a month in 2026, or 603 € with a mini job. Only periods of compulsory military or voluntary service extend this age limit, not study time. After that you are insured as a student, and from your 23rd birthday without children you pay the care surcharge of 5.13 € a month. The Salus BKK page states this age limit as well.

Student insurance until 30

Compulsory student insurance ends with the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (section 5(1) no. 9 SGB V). An extension is possible in individual cases, for example during long illness or when caring for a relative. The fund checks such cases individually. The guides Health insurance as a student over 30 and Studying at 30 (both in German) explain the rules in detail.

After that you move to voluntary insurance. A minimum assessment basis applies, calculated with the statutory formula:

  1. Assessment basis: 3,955.00 € reference amount divided by 3 gives 1,318.33 € a month.
  2. Health insurance: 14.0 % standard rate plus 3.29 % additional contribution, together 17.29 %, gives 227.94 €.
  3. Care insurance: 47.46 € with a child, 55.37 € without children.
  4. Total: 275.40 € with a child, 283.31 € without children.

With higher income the contribution follows that income, up to the contribution ceiling of 5,812.50 € a month.

Working students and mini jobs at Salus BKK

A side job usually changes nothing about your student insurance as long as studying remains the main activity. The Salus BKK student page sets out the following rules:

SituationEffect on health insurance
Working student up to 20 hours a weekStudent insurance continues. Pension insurance becomes compulsory once earnings exceed 603 € a month.
More than 20 hours during lecture periodsThe student conditions end, and compulsory insurance as an employee may arise.
More than 20 hours mainly in semester breaksStudent insurance continues.

In borderline cases, for example with changing working hours, the fund decides individually. The guide Working student: the 20-hour rule (in German) gives an overview.

Which benefits does Salus BKK list?

The student page refers to a bonus programme but gives no concrete amounts. We therefore do not state any bonus values. The statutory benefits catalogue is the same at all statutory funds. Which additional offers apply to you is shown on the Salus BKK website. Source: Salus BKK, students (in German).
