Contents

Students with a disability in Germany have the same basic rights in statutory health insurance as other insured persons. In addition, there are specific rules on aids, family insurance, the voluntary insurance of people with a severe disability and the cost ceiling. This guide explains which rules applied in 2026 and where you can get a binding answer.

Short answer: Having a disability does not change your membership in student health insurance, as long as the general conditions are met. Aids that compensate for a disability are covered if they are necessary in the individual case (§ 33 para. 1 SGB V). Whether a child with a disability can remain family-insured without an age limit depends on § 10 para. 2 no. 4 SGB V. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points in Brief

  • Compulsory student insurance depends on your student status and your age, not on a disability as such.
  • Aids such as wheelchairs, hearing aids or prostheses are covered if they are necessary in the individual case and serve to compensate for the disability (§ 33 para. 1 SGB V).
  • A child with a disability can be family-insured without an age limit if the disability occurred before the age limit applied and the child cannot provide for themselves (§ 10 para. 2 no. 4 SGB V).
  • Persons with a severe disability and prior insurance can join statutory health insurance; the fund’s statutes may set an age limit (§ 9 para. 1 no. 4 SGB V).
  • Co-payments are capped at 2 percent of gross income per calendar year, or 1 percent for people in continuous treatment for a chronic illness (§ 62 para. 1 SGB V).

Does Student Health Insurance Still Apply With a Disability?

Compulsory insurance for students at state or recognised universities depends on enrolment and on age (up to 30, § 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V). A disability is not a separate criterion in that provision. Contributions are based on the BAföG requirement for students who do not live with their parents (§ 236 SGB V). A disability does not change this calculation, which depends on your living situation and the BAföG requirement.

Differences from other students can arise in family insurance, voluntary insurance and co-payments for chronic illness. It is therefore worth clarifying your situation before you start studying or when something changes. A general overview of routes into statutory insurance is available in the German guide PKV oder GKV als Student: Was lohnt sich mehr? (in German).

Aids: What the Health Insurer Pays

Under § 33 para. 1 SGB V, insured persons are entitled to aids that are necessary in the individual case, for example to secure the success of treatment or to compensate for a disability. General everyday items are excluded. The aids must meet the quality requirements of the official aids directory.

The statutory entitlement also covers necessary additional services such as modification, repair, replacement and training in how to use the aid. In practice, obtain a prescription from your doctor before buying an aid and submit the application to your health insurer. The insurer examines each case. If the request is refused, you can lodge an objection.

Family Insurance: When a Child With a Disability Stays Insured

Children are family-insured with a member until the age of 18, or until 25 if they are in school or vocational training. During a course of study the age limit of 25 still applies, with no extension to the end of the semester (§ 10 para. 2 no. 3 SGB V).

Without an age limit, children remain insured only if the disability occurred before the age limits applied and the child cannot provide for themselves (§ 10 para. 2 no. 4 SGB V). Your health insurer decides whether these conditions are met, based on medical documents.

Severe Disability and Voluntary Insurance

Persons with a severe disability who have prior insurance can join statutory health insurance under § 9 para. 1 no. 4 SGB V. The fund’s statutes can set an age limit for this. The deadline for joining is three months and, depending on the case, starts at different times. For this group it starts when the disability is officially determined (§ 9 para. 2 SGB V).

This matters most when you look for a solution after your studies or after another form of cover ends. Before you commit, check the statutes of the fund and ask for the conditions in writing.

Step by Step: Securing Your Cover

  1. Ask your doctor which aids are necessary and have them prescribed.
  2. Submit the application to your health insurer and keep copies of all documents.
  3. Check the conditions and deadlines for family insurance or voluntary insurance.
  4. Note the cost ceiling and request the certificate as soon as you reach it.
  5. If you are unsure, ask your health insurer or the advice service at your university.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to report my disability to my health insurer?

For membership in student health insurance, the disability is not decisive. For aids, family insurance and voluntary insurance, however, the insurer needs the documents that prove your entitlement. Submit them together with the relevant application.

What does the cost ceiling do for me?

The cost ceiling limits co-payments within one calendar year. Once it is reached, the insurer issues a certificate of exemption from co-payments. For people in continuous treatment for the same serious chronic illness, the lower limit of 1 percent applies (§ 62 para. 1 SGB V).

Do these rules also apply to my children?

The family rules concern children of members. If you have children yourself, family insurance is a separate question. An overview of the age limits is available in the German guide Familienversicherung im Studium (in German).

What can I do if the insurer refuses a benefit?

You can object to the decision. The deadline and form are stated in the notice. Support your application with medical documents and ask for a written reason for the refusal.

What You Should Do Now

  1. Clarify with your doctor which aids are necessary and get them prescribed.
  2. Apply to your health insurer and keep copies.
  3. Check family or voluntary insurance early, including the deadlines.
  4. Track your co-payments so you can apply for the certificate in time.
  5. Use the advice services of your university if you need help with the process.
