The Ärzteversorgung Brandenburg, named in its statutes as the Ärzteversorgung Land Brandenburg of the Landesärztekammer, regulates contributions, exemption and benefits for doctors in Brandenburg. For new doctors, the choice of contribution multiple, exemption from statutory pension insurance and the rules on disability and survivors benefits matter most. This guide summarises the rules from the amending statutes of 2020.
Short answer: The Ärzteversorgung Brandenburg lets members choose the contribution as a multiple of the standard contribution (Regelabgabe), between 10/10 and 14/10. An increase is excluded after the age of 50. Members in marginal employment pay at least 1/10. Exemption from statutory pension insurance follows section 6 SGB VI and the exemption grounds in the statutes. Last updated: October 2026, amending statutes of 14 December 2020.
The most important points at a glance
- On application you can choose the contribution as a multiple of the standard contribution from 10/10 to 14/10 (Section 21(5)).
- After the age of 50, the chosen multiple cannot be increased (Section 21(5)).
- Members in marginal employment, or working without an exemption, pay at least 1/10 (Section 21(6)).
- Civil servants on fixed-term, probationary or trial appointments pay 1/10 if they have not applied for exemption (Section 22(5)).
- The amending statutes of 14 December 2020 took effect on 1 January 2021.
How is the contribution chosen?
The scheme does not work with a single contribution rate, but with the standard contribution and a multiple of it. On application, you can choose a multiple from 10/10 to 14/10. This choice determines how high your contribution is relative to the standard contribution, and it shapes your later entitlements. Once chosen, the multiple cannot be increased after the age of 50. If you start your career with a higher multiple, plan this early.
The amount of the standard contribution, and the minimum and maximum contributions, are not in the amending statutes. They follow from the full statutes. Before you decide, read the current version of the statutes or ask the scheme for the current standard contribution.
| Case | Contribution | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Free choice at the start | Multiple from 10/10 to 14/10 of the standard contribution, on application | Section 21(5) |
| After the age of 50 | No increase of the chosen multiple | Section 21(5) |
| Marginal employment | At least 1/10 | Section 21(6) |
| Civil servants on fixed-term, probationary or trial appointments without an exemption application | 1/10 of the standard contribution | Section 22(5) |
How does exemption from statutory pension insurance work?
The amending statutes revise the exemption grounds in section 6 of the statutes. A member who is registered as unemployed and receives benefits, or whose work is suspended because of sick pay or injury pay, falls under the exemption ground in section 6(3) no. 3 c. The condition is an exemption from the statutory pension insurance obligation in favour of a professional pension scheme. Two special cases were also added: marginal employment under section 8(1) SGB IV (no. 5), and work contractually limited to a maximum of 50 working days in the calendar year (no. 6). The text of the amending statutes does not give the application deadlines or the exact effect. These are in the law (section 6 SGB VI) and in the full statutes.
For new doctors, the special case of marginal employment matters, for example for side jobs during further training. It can mean that the minimum contribution of 1/10 applies. Which benefits does the statute regulate?
The amending statutes change three areas of benefits. For disability pensions, the administrative committee decides on the application and the supervisory committee decides on objections. It may rely on a renewed medical assessment. For survivors pensions, the entitlement to an orphan or half-orphan pension is preserved if a training is interrupted for up to four months (Section 14(4)). For the pension equalisation, a reduced entitlement can be restored by payment within ten years of the decision becoming final, and after the start of the pension this is excluded (Section 13(9)). The statutory retirement age is not part of the amending statutes.
Frequently asked questions
What is my contribution if I choose 10/10?
Then you pay the standard contribution itself. The amount of the standard contribution is in the full statutes and not in the amending statutes, so check it there or ask the scheme.
Can I still change the multiple after the age of 50?
No, a multiple once chosen cannot be increased after the age of 50. Whether and under which conditions it can be reduced is set out in the full statutes, so check this in advance.
What applies to civil servants on probation?
Civil servants on fixed-term, probationary or trial appointments pay 1/10 of the standard contribution if they have not applied for exemption under section 6(4) no. 2 of the statutes. An exemption application changes the position, so clarify this point before you start your service.
Who decides on a disability pension?
The administrative committee decides on the application, and the supervisory committee decides on the objection. The scheme can rely on a renewed medical assessment in doing so.
What to do now
- At the start of your career, clarify whether you fall under compulsory membership and whether an exemption ground applies.
- Choose your multiple of the standard contribution deliberately and note the age of 50 for any changes.
- Read the full statutes on the standard contribution, minimum and maximum contributions and the statutory retirement age.
- Check the exemption under section 6 SGB VI and the application before contributions flow to the statutory pension insurance.
