If you start work as a doctor in Baden-Württemberg, you will meet two payments that are easy to confuse: the membership contribution to the state medical chamber (Kammerbeitrag) and the contributions to the Ärzteversorgung, the professional pension scheme (Versorgungswerk) for old-age pensions, disability and survivors. This guide explains what you should know about both before you start.
Short answer: According to the chamber contribution regulation of the Landesärztekammer Baden-Württemberg, the chamber contribution ranges from a minimum of 50 euros to a maximum of 6,000 euros per year, and the contribution factor is set each year. Whether you leave statutory pension insurance is governed by section 6 SGB VI. The contributions to the Ärzteversorgung itself are set out in its statutes (Satzung). Last updated: October 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- The chamber contribution and the pension contribution are two separate payments. Check both.
- The chamber contribution is based on income from medical work, with a minimum of 50 euros and a maximum of 6,000 euros per year.
- If you receive your Approbation (licence to practise medicine) in the contribution year, the regulation charges the minimum contribution for that year.
- Exemption from statutory pension insurance is governed by the Social Code Book VI (SGB VI). Check the deadlines and effects there.
- The benefits of the Ärzteversorgung Baden-Württemberg are set out in its statutes, not in the chamber regulation.
What is the chamber contribution and how is it calculated?
The Landesärztekammer Baden-Württemberg charges membership contributions under its contribution regulation (Beitragsordnung). The regulation does not set a fixed percentage. Instead, the chamber sets a contribution factor (Beitragsfaktor) each year in its budget plan and publishes it. The assessment base is income from medical activity under German income tax law. In general, the assessment year is two years before the contribution year. If there was no income in that year, the year before the contribution year applies.
| Rule | Content | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum contribution | 50 euros per year | Section 3(1) |
| Maximum contribution | 6,000 euros per year | Section 3(1) |
| Contribution factor | Set and published each year | Section 3(1) |
| Income below 10,000 euros, or not practising for the full year | Minimum contribution | Section 3(2) |
| Mainly theoretical, academic or administrative work | 80 percent of the standard contribution, unless you also practise medicine | Section 3(3) |
| Voluntary membership | 250 euros per year | Section 1(4) |
To estimate what you will pay for a given year, follow these steps:
- Identify the contribution year and the assessment base, that is your income from medical work two years earlier.
- Ask the chamber for the contribution factor of that year or look it up on its website.
- Multiply the assessment base by the factor and check whether the minimum or maximum applies.
- Compare the result with your notice and send in proof of income promptly if the figures differ.
When is exemption from statutory pension insurance worthwhile?
Doctors who become members of a professional pension scheme can apply for exemption from statutory pension insurance. The legal basis is section 6 SGB VI. What matters is checking early whether you belong to the scheme and when the obligation starts. The chamber contribution regulation does not decide the exemption on its own.
Whether the exemption is worth it for you depends on your income, your long-term plans and your other protection. For a comparison with the statutory pension, see the German guide Rentenversicherung im Studium: Pflicht, Befreiung und Rentenpunkte (in German).
Which benefits does the Ärzteversorgung provide?
The benefits of the Ärzteversorgung Baden-Württemberg, such as old-age pension, disability pension and survivors benefits, are defined in its statutes. The chamber contribution regulation does not cover them. Before you decide, read the statutes and compare the retirement age, the disability rules and the survivors benefits. For an overview of how disability cover fits into the careers of doctors, see BU für Ärzte in Weiterbildung: Klauseln und Berufsgruppe (in German).
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay the chamber contribution during further training?
That depends on the regulation and your income in the assessment year. If you have little or no income from medical work during further training, you usually pay the minimum contribution. Check your notice and the classification it uses.
What happens if I receive my Approbation during the contribution year?
Under the regulation, members who receive their Approbation or practice licence in the contribution year pay the minimum contribution for that year. The obligation starts from the month in which the conditions apply.
Where can I find the rules of the Ärzteversorgung Baden-Württemberg?
In the statutes of the scheme and in the contribution rules it publishes. The chamber contribution regulation is not the right source for these. If in doubt, ask the Ärzteversorgung directly.
Can the pension contribution be offset against the chamber contribution?
No. Both payments run separately. The chamber contribution is a membership fee to the chamber, and the pension contribution is paid to the scheme. Check both notices individually.
What to do now
- Decide early which bodies apply to you: the Landesärztekammer and the Ärzteversorgung.
- Read the chamber contribution regulation and check your classification for the contribution year.
- Clarify the exemption from statutory pension insurance under section 6 SGB VI and its deadlines before your first contribution period starts.
- Read the statutes of the Ärzteversorgung on contributions and benefits, and send your questions in writing.
