What does SECURVITA cost as a student?
The SECURVITA information sheet for students states the contribution rates for 2026. We have recalculated the totals with the statutory formula:
- Assessment basis: 855.00 € a month (BAföG needs rate).
- Base contribution: 10.22 % of 855.00 € gives 87.38 €.
- Additional contribution: 3.90 % of 855.00 € gives 33.35 €.
- Health insurance in total: 120.73 €. This figure is also stated on the fund’s information sheet.
- Care insurance: 30.78 € with a child or for parents, 35.91 € from 23 without children.
- Total: 151.51 € under 23 or with a child, 156.64 € from 23 without children.
To place the additional contribution in context, see Additional contributions 2026 for all health insurance funds (in German). Each percentage point of additional contribution equals about 8.55 € a month for students.
What applies at SECURVITA from 25 and from 30?
Family insurance until 25
Until your 25th birthday you can be covered free of charge through a parent who is a member of a statutory fund. The condition is total income of at most 565 € a month in 2026, or 603 € with a mini job. Only periods of compulsory military or voluntary service extend this age limit, not study time. After that you are insured as a student, and from your 23rd birthday without children you pay the care surcharge of 5.13 € a month. The SECURVITA information sheet also states the age limit of 25.
Student insurance until 30
Compulsory student insurance ends with the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (section 5(1) no. 9 SGB V). An extension is possible in individual cases, for example during long illness or when caring for a relative. The fund checks such cases individually. The guides Health insurance as a student over 30 and Studying at 30 (both in German) explain the rules in detail.
After that you move to voluntary insurance. A minimum assessment basis applies, calculated with the statutory formula:
- Assessment basis: 3,955.00 € reference amount divided by 3 gives 1,318.33 € a month.
- Health insurance: 14.0 % standard rate plus 3.90 % additional contribution, together 17.90 %, gives 235.98 €.
- Care insurance: 47.46 € with a child, 55.37 € without children.
- Total: 283.44 € with a child, 291.35 € without children.
The care figures for the minimum amount in the fund’s information sheet differ from the statutory formula. We therefore calculate with the statutory formula. With higher income the contribution follows that income, up to the contribution ceiling of 5,812.50 € a month.
Working students and mini jobs at SECURVITA
A side job usually changes nothing about your student insurance as long as studying remains the main activity. The rules at a glance:
| Situation | Effect on health insurance |
|---|---|
| Working student up to 20 hours a week | Student insurance continues. Pension insurance becomes compulsory once earnings exceed 603 € a month. |
| More than 20 hours during lecture periods | The student conditions end, and compulsory insurance as an employee may arise. |
| More than 20 hours mainly in semester breaks | Student insurance continues. |
In borderline cases the fund decides individually. The guide Working student: the 20-hour rule (in German) gives an overview.
Which benefits does SECURVITA list?
The student information sheet names no bonus programme and no bonus amounts. We therefore do not state any bonus values. The statutory benefits catalogue is the same at all statutory funds. Additional offers are shown on the SECURVITA website. Source: SECURVITA, student information sheet (in German).
How to switch to SECURVITA

- Cancellation with your old fund takes effect at the end of the second calendar month after notice is received.
- After switching you are generally bound for twelve months, except under a special right of termination after a rise in the additional contribution.
