Return to Statutory Insurance: When Switching Back Works

When you can return from private to statutory health insurance, which age limits apply, and what counts during studies, after graduation and during the traineeship.

A return to statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) before your 55th birthday is generally possible, but you cannot simply apply for it. It works when you become compulsorily insured in statutory insurance, for example through employment below the compulsory insurance threshold of €6,450 per month (2026). During your studies this route is usually closed once you have been exempted.

The Key Points in Brief

  • The exemption from compulsory insurance is irrevocable and normally applies for the entire course of study.
  • Anyone who enrols and does not apply for exemption is compulsorily insured in student health insurance. An existing private contract can then be cancelled within three months, with effect from the start of the compulsory insurance.
  • After graduation, employment subject to compulsory insurance usually leads back into the GKV. A minijob is not enough for this.
  • Student insurance ends with the semester in which you turn 30. From 55 a return is generally ruled out.
  • During your studies the GKV costs about €143 to €148 per month in 2026 including long-term care insurance, at an average additional contribution.

When Can You Return to Statutory Insurance?

The GKV does not take you back on request. What matters is whether you become compulsorily insured or can be covered as a family member. The table shows what applies in each situation.

Your situationWhat applies
Student with exemptionThe exemption cannot be revoked and normally applies for the entire course of study. The route back usually only opens after your studies.
Student without exemptionOnce you enrol, you are compulsorily insured unless a priority insurance applies. You apply for exemption within three months, otherwise compulsory insurance remains.
Employment below the thresholdYou become compulsorily insured. The threshold in 2026 is €6,450 per month (€77,400 per year).
Employment above the thresholdThere is no compulsory insurance in the GKV.
MinijobIt is not enough for a return. You need employment subject to compulsory insurance.
From age 55A return is generally ruled out, with one exception through family insurance via a partner.

Switching From Private to Statutory Insurance as a Student: What Applies During Your Studies

You are exempted

With the exemption you have proven that you have private cover and been released from compulsory insurance during your studies. It cannot be revoked. Family insurance free of contributions is not possible for the duration of the exemption. Our article on switching to private insurance (in German) describes how the process works.

A semester off does not change this, because compulsory insurance generally also applies during study abroad and semesters off. A second course of study after an interruption of more than one month, however, can make a return to the GKV possible.

You are not yet exempted

Anyone enrolled at a state or state-recognised university is compulsorily insured in statutory insurance, unless a priority insurance applies (section 5 SGB V). This also applies if you were previously privately insured. Universities already require a digital confirmation of a statutory insurer when you enrol, including from privately insured students.

You have three months from the start of compulsory insurance to apply for exemption. How much time you have in your case is shown in our article on private insurance in the first semester (in German). If you do not apply, student compulsory insurance remains in place. The reverse route, from the GKV to private insurance, is covered in our article on switching during your studies (in German).

Cancelling the private contract

If you become compulsorily insured in statutory health or long-term care insurance, you can cancel the private contract within three months, with effect from the start of the compulsory insurance (section 205 (2) VVG). A right to family insurance is treated the same as compulsory insurance. If the insurer requests proof in writing, you must prove the start of compulsory insurance within two months, otherwise the cancellation is invalid. This does not apply if you missed the deadline through no fault of your own. For contracts running for more than one year, ordinary cancellation is only possible with three months’ notice to the end of a contract year, and an agreed minimum period of cover takes precedence.

Returning to Statutory Insurance After Your Studies

Student compulsory insurance ends at the close of the semester for which you were last enrolled or re-registered. Several routes back into the GKV follow.

Employment subject to compulsory insurance

As an employee below the compulsory insurance threshold, you become compulsorily insured. For 2026 the threshold is €6,450 per month, or €77,400 per year (German Pension Insurance). For 2027, €84,150 per year is planned, and the Bundesrat has yet to approve it. If your salary is above that, there is no compulsory insurance. A minijob is also not enough for a return. What the decision at career start means is described in our article on private insurance at career start (in German).

Unemployment benefit I

If you receive unemployment benefit I, compulsory insurance usually applies. The Federal Employment Agency links entitlement to unemployment benefit I to a pre-insurance period of twelve months within 30 months. Your health insurer clarifies whether compulsory insurance applies in your case.

Family insurance

Spouses, civil partners and children of members can be covered free of contributions under family insurance. Requirements include, among others, a residence in Germany, no compulsory insurance of your own, no exemption and no full-time self-employment. Total income may not exceed €565 per month in 2026, and for a minijob the limit is €603. For 2027, €590 is planned. Children are insured up to 18 without further conditions, up to 23 if they are not employed, and up to 25 during studies or training.

Voluntary membership

Anyone who was not exempted after their studies and has no other insurance remains voluntarily insured. This starts automatically (section 188 (4) SGB V).

Age Limits: Until When Is a Return Possible?

AgeWhat applies
25Family insurance for children in studies or training, extended in certain services such as the federal voluntary service.
30Student insurance ends with the semester by the end of which you turned 30. Beyond that it only applies if the type of training or family or personal reasons justify it, for example in a second educational pathway.
55Anyone who becomes compulsorily insured after this age remains insurance-exempt if they were not statutorily insured in the last five years and at least half of that period was insurance-exempt, exempted or not subject to compulsory insurance. This generally rules out a return (section 6 (3a) SGB V).

From 55 one route remains open: free family insurance through a statutorily insured spouse or civil partner applies if your own total income does not exceed €565 per month (2026).

Traineeship: Is Statutory Health Insurance an Option?

That depends on your status. Trainee civil servants are usually civil servants on probation, and are exempt from contributions to health, long-term care and unemployment insurance. The principle of self-provision applies: you insure yourself privately or voluntarily in the GKV and receive state aid (Beihilfe) on top. What counts is the letter of appointment, your status and your employer, not the name of the training.

Trainee lawyers are, depending on the state, civil servants on probation or are in a public-law training relationship. In a training relationship there is statutory health insurance compulsory, without a claim to Beihilfe, and contributions are deducted from your pay. Which variant applies to you is stated in your appointment letter. You will find more on all cases in our guide to health insurance during the traineeship (in German).

Some states offer a flat-rate Beihilfe, for example Hamburg. It is a tax-free subsidy of 50% of the GKV contribution including the additional contribution, without a subsidy toward long-term care insurance. The condition is the final waiver of the individual Beihilfe.

Your next step after the preparatory service decides the outcome. If you are appointed as a civil servant on probation directly, you stay privately insured. In employment below the annual earnings threshold (2026: €77,400 per year), GKV compulsory insurance applies. An expectancy policy in private insurance allows you to return to your private tariff without a new health check, and the deadline is usually two months. Whether it is worthwhile is explained in our article on expectancy policies in private insurance (in German).

What Does Returning to Statutory Insurance Cost?

During your studies the GKV has a fixed basis. With a contribution base of €855 and a contribution rate of 10.22%, the basic contribution is €87.38 per month. Added to this are your insurer’s additional contribution (average 2026: 2.9% or €24.80) and long-term care insurance of €30.78 (under 23 or with a child) or €35.91 (23 or older, no children). This gives roughly €143 or €148 per month.

With employment, the contribution depends on your income. The general contribution rate is 14.6%, plus your insurer’s additional contribution, and your employer pays half. Contributions are calculated up to the contribution assessment ceiling of €5,812.50 per month. Example with an assumed gross salary of €3,000 and the average additional contribution: 14.6% plus 2.9% makes 17.5%, so €525 for health insurance. You pay €262.50 of this, and your employer pays the same amount. Long-term care insurance is added on top.

If you stay voluntarily insured in the GKV after your studies, you pay at least on a contribution base of €1,318.33 per month. With a contribution rate of 14.6%, an additional contribution of 2.18% (example fund) and no child, that is €276.59 for health and long-term care insurance. Your insurer’s additional contribution shifts this figure.

What Changes in Benefits?

Copayments in the GKV are 10% of the pharmacy price, at least €5, at most €10. For 2027, €7.50 and €15 have been decided. The exemption limit is 2% of annual gross income, or 1% for people with a chronic illness. For dentures the insurer pays a fixed subsidy of 60% of the standard treatment, and from 1 January 2027, 50% has been decided. What a private tariff reimburses is set out in its conditions.

Does the insurer pay for vaccinations such as shingles?

The Standing Vaccination Committee (STIKO) issues recommendations, and the vaccination guideline of the Federal Joint Committee is the binding basis for entitlement to benefits. Recommended vaccinations are compulsory benefits of the GKV. Whether and for whom the shingles vaccination is recommended is stated in the STIKO recommendations. What a private tariff reimburses for vaccinations is governed by its terms. Our article on vaccinations in private health insurance (in German) explains what matters.

If Returning Does Not Work: What Remains in Private Insurance

If a return to the GKV is not possible, you have options in private insurance. Under section 204 VVG you can switch to another tariff with similar cover at your own insurer, with credit for acquired rights and the ageing provisions. For additional benefits the insurer may require an exclusion of benefits or a reasonable risk surcharge. Our article on switching private tariffs (in German) shows the process.

The basic tariff offers the benefits of the GKV. Those already privately insured can only switch there under certain conditions, for example from the age of 55, when receiving a pension, or when receiving social assistance or basic security benefits. If you stay in private insurance and want to lower the premium, check the deductible and the tariff level. Our article on the cheapest private health insurance for students (in German) lists starting points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from private to statutory insurance as a student?

If you have been exempted from compulsory insurance, this is generally not possible. The exemption is irrevocable and normally applies for the entire course of study. If you did not apply for exemption, enrolment makes you compulsorily insured in student health insurance.

Up to what age can I return to statutory insurance?

Student compulsory insurance ends with the semester in which you turn 30. Anyone who would become compulsorily insured after turning 55 remains, under certain conditions, insurance-exempt. This generally rules out a return.

Is a minijob enough to return to statutory insurance?

No. You need employment subject to compulsory insurance below the compulsory insurance threshold of €6,450 per month (2026).

How long do I have to cancel private insurance after returning?

If you become compulsorily insured in statutory insurance, you can cancel the contract within three months, with effect from the start of compulsory insurance. If the insurer requests proof, you must provide it within two months.

Does statutory insurance pay for the shingles vaccination?

The insurer covers vaccinations that the STIKO recommends and that are listed in the vaccination guideline of the Federal Joint Committee. Whether the shingles vaccination is included for you can be found in the current STIKO recommendations. With private insurance, the tariff conditions decide.

Here Is How to Proceed Now

  1. Clarify whether you are exempted, and note the start of your compulsory insurance.
  2. Check whether your salary is below the compulsory insurance threshold of €6,450 per month and whether the employment is subject to compulsory insurance.
  3. Once compulsory insurance is confirmed, cancel private insurance within three months, retroactively to the start of compulsory insurance, and have your insurer’s proof ready.
  4. From age 55, check whether family insurance through your partner is an option.
