Volunteering, voluntary service years and civic engagement are part of everyday life for many students, whether in a club, with the fire brigade, with the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) or in a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ, voluntary social year) or Bundesfreiwilligendienst (BFD, federal voluntary service). This overview gathers all our guides on the topic and shows which questions on insurance, child benefit, liability, release from work and proof of engagement you should clarify.

Short answer: A recognised voluntary service year extends family health insurance through your parents by its length, up to twelve months (§ 10 para. 2 no. 3 SGB V, German Social Code Book V). For child benefit (Kindergeld), a recognised voluntary service year also keeps the age limit of 25 (§ 32 para. 4 EStG, Income Tax Act). Whether a volunteer role triggers tax-free allowances depends on the activity and how you are paid (§ 3 no. 26 and 26a EStG). Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points in brief

  • A voluntary service year can keep family insurance and child benefit going longer if the conditions are met. The details are in the section on insurance and child benefit.
  • Volunteering alongside your studies works best when you fix exam phases early and agree your commitment with your university and club.
  • In the case of accidents and damage in a club, protection and liability depend on the organisation, the insurance and the task. Check the club documents early.
  • For activities with children or young people, an extended police clearance certificate (erweitertes Führungszeugnis) is often required. The organisation decides whether it is needed for your role.
  • Documented proof of engagement helps in your CV and applications. Record periods and tasks as you go.
  • Administrative rules and payment amounts change. Check the current position with the provider, the family benefits office and your health insurer before you decide.

Voluntary service years: FSJ, BFD and what follows

A voluntary service year has its own rules for applications, allowances, pension contributions and the CV. The table below sorts the guides by the question you are asking.

Insurance and child benefit during the service

A voluntary service year mainly affects age limits. The rules below are in the law and apply as of November 2026.

BenefitRule for a voluntary service yearLegal basis
Family insurance for childrenAge limit of 25 while in school or vocational training. The service extends the limit by its length, up to twelve months.§ 10 para. 2 no. 3 SGB V
Child benefit (Kindergeld)A recognised voluntary service year is one of the grounds that keep the entitlement up to age 25.§ 32 para. 4 EStG

Without a ground for extension, family insurance ends at the end of the day before the 25th birthday. How this works in practice during studies is explained in our guide Family insurance during studies under 25 (in German).

Planning volunteering alongside your studies

Volunteering and studies fit together when schedules, exams and responsibilities are clarified early. Allowances for volunteers also affect support such as BAföG (German student financial aid) and family insurance, so look at them together.

Liability, accident cover and police clearance certificate

In a club or aid organisation, the question of who pays when something goes wrong comes up quickly. The answer depends on the organisation, the insurance and the task.

Proof, CV and benefits

Volunteering only helps in applications if you can prove it. The guide on proof shows which documents are suitable. For wording in your CV, see also CV guide for students (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Is a voluntary service year an advantage for family insurance?

The service extends the age limit for children on family insurance by its length, up to twelve months. Whether this helps you depends on your age and when you start studying. The rule is in § 10 para. 2 no. 3 SGB V.

Does the child benefit age limit also apply to FSJ and BFD?

For a recognised voluntary service year, § 32 para. 4 EStG provides for consideration up to age 25. The family benefits office checks whether the entitlement applies in your case and gives binding information on request.

Am I required to work as an election worker as a student?

Whether an obligation applies and which exceptions exist is explained in our guide on the duty and its exceptions. What counts is the applicable electoral law and the responsible municipality. If you are unsure, ask them directly.

Who pays if something happens at a club?

First check whether the club holds insurance and whether statutory accident insurance applies. For damage to third parties, fault matters. The guide on liability shows the steps in detail.

Can I combine volunteering with a part-time job?

Yes, that is possible, but time, income and effects on insurance and support should be considered together. Our guides on the volunteer allowance and family insurance cover the individual points.

What to do now

  1. Clarify first whether your commitment is a voluntary service year, volunteering or election work. This classification determines insurance, deadlines and entitlements.
  2. Check insurance and age limits before you start. For family insurance and child benefit, your 25th birthday is the key date.
  3. Have the activity, the volunteer allowance and any release from work confirmed in writing by the club or provider.
  4. Document your commitment as you go so you can prove it later in your CV and applications.
  5. Ask your health insurer, the family benefits office or your university if your situation changes.
