You can withdraw an exemption from pension insurance in a mini-job once, and you have been able to do so since 1 July 2026. In a mini-job you are generally subject to pension insurance, but you can apply for an exemption. This guide explains what the exemption means today, how the withdrawal works, and what to check first.

Short answer: In a mini-job you are generally subject to pension insurance. An exemption is available on application. Since 1 July 2026, the exemption can be withdrawn once. The withdrawal takes effect from the month after the application, unless the collection body objects within one month. The legal basis is § 6 SGB VI. Last updated: November 2026.

Key points

  • An exemption from the pension insurance obligation in a mini-job is not automatic. It requires an application.
  • Since 1 July 2026, an exemption can be withdrawn once.
  • The withdrawal takes effect from the month after the application.
  • The exemption applies only to the individual employment.
  • For future changes, the dates set in law count, not announcements in the press.

What does the exemption mean in a mini-job?

With an exemption, you stay in the mini-job without the obligation to pay into the statutory pension insurance. The employer reports the exemption to the collection body (Einzugsstelle). Under § 6 Abs. 3 SGB VI, the exemption is deemed granted if the collection body does not object within one month of the employer’s report. Under § 6 Abs. 4 SGB VI, it takes effect from the start of the month, depending on when the report is made, or from a later month.

How does the withdrawal work?

The rules for the withdrawal are set out in the law. The table summarises the points that matter.

What happens after the withdrawal?

With the withdrawal, pension insurance obligation in the mini-job applies again. Contribution periods then count towards your later pension and towards the waiting period. Whether that makes sense for you depends on your situation. If every euro matters each month, you weigh this differently from someone who wants to build pension entitlements.

When is the obligation worthwhile, and when is the exemption?

The decision balances pension entitlements against your monthly net income.

  • For pension insurance: contribution periods count towards your later pension and towards waiting periods.
  • Against pension insurance: the contribution reduces your monthly net income, which matters on a student budget.
  • Helpful: compare the contribution with the pension entitlement you expect. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung can explain the consequences in your case.

What should you check before withdrawing?

Before you trigger the withdrawal, run a short check. Because the withdrawal is binding for the duration of the employment, treat a job you do for only a few months differently from a long-term one. Note the key points in advance:

  • The number and earnings of all mini-jobs, because the exemption applies to each employment separately.
  • The planned duration of each employment.
  • The date of your next payslip and the deadline your employer needs for the report.
  • The contact person at the employer who passes the report to the collection body.

For questions about pension insurance, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung can help directly. It can explain the consequences for your case without requiring you to commit.

What does the withdrawal change in your monthly pay?

Your gross pay stays the same. With the withdrawal, a pension contribution is added that reduces the net amount. The exact deduction depends on the contribution rate of the year and on the payroll calculation your employer makes. We do not give a fixed figure here, because it varies by year and by calculation.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Starting the withdrawal without agreeing with the employer, even though the employer makes the report.
  • Overlooking that the withdrawal is one-off, because the law does not provide for a second withdrawal.
  • Forgetting the timing: the withdrawal takes effect only from the month after the application.

If you keep these points in mind, you avoid gaps in the payroll and unnecessary queries from the employer and the collection body.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be exempted from pension insurance in a mini-job?

Yes, on application. The exemption is reported to the collection body through the employer. Once it is deemed granted, you are exempt from pension insurance in the mini-job for as long as the exemption applies.

When can I withdraw the exemption?

Since 1 July 2026, a one-off withdrawal is possible. The withdrawal takes effect from the month after your application. Agree on the timing with your next payslip.

Does the withdrawal apply to all my mini-jobs?

No. The exemption relates to the individual employment, so you consider each mini-job separately. The rule is set out in § 6 Abs. 5 SGB VI.

Does the withdrawal change my health insurance?

No. Pension insurance is a separate area. Health insurance follows its own rules, which are explained in the guide on health insurance with a part-time job (in German).

Are there new rules from 2027?

Changes for 2027 are under discussion. We will not name binding dates until they are set out in law. You can find the current position in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) and on the pages of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung.

Pension insurance for students: why the question matters

For students, pension entitlements feel far away, and money each month is often tight. At the same time, pension entitlements arise only from contribution periods. Anyone who pays contributions during their studies collects periods that later count towards the pension and waiting periods. Anyone who avoids the obligation keeps more money each month but forgoes these entitlements. Both paths are possible, and the decision depends on how you plan your finances as a whole.

What to do next

  1. Check your payslip to see whether you are exempt from pension insurance in your mini-job.
  2. Decide whether pension insurance makes sense for you, and compare the contribution with your goal.
  3. Speak to your employer, who makes the report to the collection body.
  4. Keep the application and the confirmation until the withdrawal takes effect.
