Ending Family Insurance When You Start Your First Job

You do not cancel family insurance in Germany. It ends when your income passes 565 euros a month. Here is how the switch to your own health insurance works.

Many people starting their first job are still covered by family insurance through their parents. The question is then rarely how to cancel family insurance, but when it ends and what you must do so that the transition goes smoothly.

Short answer: You do not cancel family insurance yourself. It ends when the conditions of section 10 of the Social Code Book V (SGB V) no longer apply, for example when your regular monthly total income in 2026 exceeds 565 euros. You are then generally insured as an employee yourself. Last updated: October 2026.

The key points in brief

  • Family insurance is not a contract you cancel. It ends when its statutory conditions no longer apply (section 10 SGB V).
  • The income limit in 2026 is 565 euros of total income per month, one seventh of the monthly reference income (Bezugsgröße).
  • With a mini-job of up to 603 euros per month, family insurance generally continues (section 10(1) sentence 6 SGB V).
  • The member through whom you are insured reports the change (section 10(6) SGB V).
  • With a regular job you are generally compulsorily insured yourself, and your employer registers you (section 5(1) no. 1 SGB V).

When does family insurance end?

Family insurance depends on conditions. These include residence or habitual abode in Germany, no primary compulsory or voluntary insurance of your own, no main self-employment and total income within the limit. What matters is the regular monthly income, not how long the job lasts or the annual result.

Monthly income (2026)Family insuranceWhat to watch
Up to 565 eurosGenerally continuesKeep an eye on the limit if your income changes
Mini-job up to 603 eurosGenerally continues (special case under section 10(1) sentence 6 SGB V)The mini-job limit also applies
Above 565 euros (other than a mini-job)Ends when the conditions no longer applyOwn health insurance through the employer, inform the insurer
2027 (draft): 590 eurosNot yet bindingApproval by the Bundesrat of the 2027 calculation values is still pending

Assumption: your income is 2,000 euros gross per month, you are 24 years old and you take a full-time job. Your income is then well above 565 euros, and family insurance ends. Your employer then registers you with a health insurer of your choice.

Which age limits apply to children?

Family insurance also has age limits. They apply alongside the income limit and follow from the law:

Age of the childConditionSource
Up to 18No further conditionSection 10(2) no. 1 SGB V
Up to 23Only if not in gainful employmentSection 10(2) no. 2 SGB V
Up to 25During school or vocational training, studies or a voluntary serviceSection 10(2) no. 3 SGB V

Once you are no longer in training after your first job, the age limit of 25 is often no longer the decisive point. The income limit and the question of gainful employment then matter most. How a short or small job is assessed is decided by your health insurer on a case-by-case basis.

Who has to report what?

The reporting duties are clearly divided. The law states that the member reports family members and changes with the necessary information (section 10(6) SGB V). The umbrella association of statutory health insurers sets the uniform reporting procedure. In practice, the process runs like this:

  1. Inform your parents, or the member through whom you are insured, as soon as the new job is confirmed.
  2. Your employer registers you with social insurance once you start as an employee.
  3. You choose a health insurer and submit the required documents.
  4. The insurer confirms your membership, and you check whether the contribution on your payslip is correct.

What changes if you are still studying?

If you study alongside your first job, check whether insurance as a student takes precedence. This depends on your study status and working hours. For the working student privilege, the limit of 20 hours per week is decisive, as the joint circular of 2016 describes. A full-time job generally brings compulsory insurance as an employee. More on this is in the guide Family insurance during your studies (in German).

An internship can follow its own rules. A compulsory, unpaid internship is treated differently under section 5(1) no. 10 SGB V than a paid voluntary internship. Read your contract and ask your insurer before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to cancel family insurance with my insurer?

No. A cancellation is not provided for. Family insurance ends when the conditions no longer apply. It matters that the member through whom you are insured reports the change, so that the insurer keeps the records correct.

Do special payments such as a Christmas bonus count as income?

The limit refers to regular monthly total income. Whether a special payment counts depends on how regular it is. Your health insurer clarifies the specific case, because it examines each one individually.

What applies to a fixed-term job of only a few months?

The duration does not matter for the income limit. What counts is the monthly income. If you are above the limit in a month, family insurance ends for that period. Agree the transition with your insurer so that no gap arises.

What if I have no cover between two jobs?

A gap should be avoided, because health insurance is compulsory without interruption. Contact your health insurer early and clarify the transition. If in doubt, the insurer helps you organise the membership seamlessly.

What should you do now?

  1. Calculate your expected monthly income in the new job and compare it with 565 euros.
  2. Agree the transition with the parents through whom you are insured, so the report is made on time.
  3. Clarify membership and the required documents with the future health insurer.
  4. Check your first payslip for the health insurance and supplementary contribution.

Which documents do you need for the new health insurer?

Each insurer sets its own requirements. As a rule, you need the same details you keep ready for other registrations:

  • Your health insurance number, if you already have one, for example from your electronic health card
  • Your identity card or passport and your address
  • Details of your employer, the start of employment and your salary
  • If applicable, proof of your previous cover, such as a confirmation from your parents that family insurance has ended

Ask your new insurer before you switch which documents it requires. That avoids follow-up questions and a gap in cover.
