The German pension scheme for veterinarians (Versorgungswerk für Tierärzte) is an occupational pension run by the veterinary chambers. Whether you must join, how much you pay and when you can apply for exemption from statutory pension insurance (gesetzliche Rentenversicherung) depends on your state, your chamber and whether you are employed or self-employed. This guide uses the rules of the Tierärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe as an example and the federal law.
Short answer: Veterinarians in Westfalen-Lippe must join the scheme once they are members of the chamber. Self-employed members pay a compulsory contribution of up to 1,571.70 euros per month in 2026, which can be reduced on proof of low income. Employees can apply for exemption from statutory pension insurance, ideally within three months of starting work. Last updated: October 2026.
The Essentials at a Glance
- Membership: All members of the Tierärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe must join the scheme, unless they are excluded or exempt.
- Start date: Membership begins on the first day of the month in which chamber membership arises. The guidance does not name qualification, licensing or practice start as separate dates.
- Self-employed: The compulsory contribution equals the maximum of 1,571.70 euros per month (2026). For income below 8,450 euros per month, a reduction is possible on proof.
- Employees: With exemption, the contribution is 18.6 percent of gross salary, capped at 1,571.70 euros per month, split equally between employer and employee.
- Deadline: The exemption application must be filed electronically through the scheme within three months of starting work.
Who Must Join the Scheme?
According to the guidance of the Tierärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe, all members of the chamber must join, unless they are excluded or exempt. The rules are set by state law, so a veterinarian in another federal state is not automatically subject to the same dates. Ask the chamber in your state when the obligation starts for you.
How High Are the Contributions?
The contribution rules are set in the scheme’s bylaws (Satzung) and depend on whether you are self-employed or employed and whether you are exempt from statutory pension insurance. The table shows the rules of the Westfalen-Lippe chamber for 2026.
| Situation | Contribution rule (2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employed | Compulsory contribution at the maximum of 1,571.70 euros per month | Reduction on proof if income is below 8,450 euros per month |
| Employee, exempt from statutory pension insurance | 18.6 percent of gross salary, capped at 1,571.70 euros per month | Employer and employee each pay half |
| Employee, not exempt | Minimum compulsory contribution of 157.17 euros per month on top of statutory pension insurance | Contributions then run in parallel |
Example. Assumption: you are employed, your gross salary is 5,000 euros per month and you are exempt. Then 18.6 percent equals 930 euros, and each side pays 465 euros. This only applies if your chamber’s bylaws set the same rule.
When Can You Be Exempt From Statutory Pension Insurance?
Under section 6(1) sentence 1 no. 1 of the Sechstes Buch Sozialgesetzbuch (SGB VI), employees and self-employed persons are exempt if they are members of a pension scheme and a chamber by law. Three conditions apply. The chamber obligation must have existed at the place of work before 1 January 1995. Contributions must be income-related and take the contribution assessment ceiling into account. The contributions must also fund benefits for reduced earning capacity, old age and survivors.
You file the application electronically through the scheme, which forwards it to the pension insurance carrier (section 6(2) SGB VI). If you want to understand how statutory pension insurance works for students first, see our guide Rentenversicherung im Studium (in German).
What Is the Deadline?
The exemption takes effect from the start of the conditions if you apply within three months (section 6(4) sentence 1 SGB VI). The chamber guidance uses the same period from the start of work. If you apply later, the exemption takes effect only from the date the application is received. An exemption covers only the specific employment, so each new job needs a new application (section 6(5) SGB VI).
What Happens When Compulsory Membership Ends?
According to the guidance, you can continue membership voluntarily after compulsory membership ends. The application must be filed within six months of that end. If you switch between employment and self-employment, plan the transition early. Details on contributions and benefits are in the scheme’s bylaws.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must I join the scheme as a veterinarian?
If you are a member of the veterinary chamber and no exception applies, you are a compulsory member according to the Westfalen-Lippe guidance. Other federal states have their own rules. Ask the chamber in your state if you are unsure.
How does the scheme differ from statutory pension insurance?
Statutory pension insurance is a state compulsory scheme with income-related contributions. The scheme is an institution of the chamber with its own bylaws. An exemption under section 6 SGB VI means the scheme replaces the statutory pension insurance obligation for that employment.
Can I apply for exemption later?
Only within the deadline. If the application is filed after three months, the exemption starts when it is received. There is no automatic exemption for past periods. Ask the scheme to confirm your position in writing.
How do I find out which contribution applies to me?
The contribution follows from your chamber’s bylaws and from your income or salary. The guidance lists the 2026 figures. You can get a personal assessment of your situation from Academycon (in German).
