US Student Offers with a VPN: Why It Does Not Work

A VPN changes your network address, not your enrolment or residence. What the US offers from ChatGPT and Google require. Last updated October 2026.

Using student offers from the USA with a VPN seems obvious when an offer explicitly says it is only for US universities. This guide explains why that approach does not work, which conditions the providers actually state, and how to assess an offer for your own situation.

Short answer: A VPN only changes your network address, not your studies or your place of residence. The ChatGPT student offer requires enrolment at an eligible US university and is available only until 31 October 2026. The US student trial for Google AI Pro additionally requires residence in the USA. Students in Germany have other Google offers, see below. Both providers verify through SheerID. Last updated: October 2026, offers change frequently.

Key Points in Brief

  • A VPN changes your network address. Your university, your enrolment and your place of residence stay the same.
  • According to OpenAI’s help page, the student offer for ChatGPT is aimed at currently enrolled students at eligible US universities.
  • According to Google’s help page, the student trial for Google AI Pro is available exclusively to students in the USA. Students in Germany have other Google offers, see below.
  • Both providers check student status through SheerID. A proof of enrolment from a German university does not match an offer that requires a US university.
  • False information can lead to rejection or account suspension. The provider’s terms are decisive.
  • For you, the key question is whether the offer applies to your country and your university. The provider’s page answers that.

Which US Student Offers Exist at All?

Two offers appear especially often in search results: student access to ChatGPT and the student trial for Google AI Pro. Both are tied to where you study, and for Google also to where you live. The table summarises the providers’ information.

OfferWho is eligibleFree periodAfterwardsVerification
ChatGPT (back-to-school offer for students)Currently enrolled students at eligible US degree-granting institutions (OpenAI help page, October 2026)Four free billing periods; according to OpenAI, available only until 31 October 2026US$20 per month unless cancelled (OpenAI, October 2026)SheerID, depending on the institution via trusted data sources, university login or a document
Google AI Pro (US student trial)Students who live in the USA and are at least 18 years old (Google help page, October 2026)12 months freeThen a student discount for another 12 months; price see provider’s pageSheerID; an enrolment proof can be uploaded; manual review within 48 hours according to Google

Both US offers are therefore tied to an eligible US university. For the Google trial, residence in the USA is an additional requirement.

Why Does a VPN Not Work?

A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server in another country. As a result, your network address looks different, but nothing else changes. The conditions, however, require facts about you: enrolment at an eligible US university and, for Google, residence in the USA. A different network address gives you neither of these.

Verification is a further hurdle. According to both help pages, SheerID checks student status, for example through trusted data sources, a university login or a document. A proof of enrolment from a German university does not match an offer that requires a US university, and a VPN does not change that.

Anyone who provides information that is not accurate risks rejection of the verification or suspension of the account. The terms of use of each service determine the consequences. If you do not meet the requirements of an offer, you should not claim it.

What Does This Mean for Students in Germany?

The decisive question is not how to unlock an offer, but whether it applies to you at all. At first glance, many offers look alike. They differ clearly in country, type of institution and end date, however. A short check before you sign up saves time and trouble.

These five questions help you classify an offer:

  1. Where does the offer apply? Search the provider’s page for information on countries and regions.
  2. Which institutions are eligible? Look for wording such as US degree-granting institutions or accredited educational institutions.
  3. How does verification work? Check whether a university login, a university email address or a document is required. More on this in our guide to student status verification.
  4. What does it cost afterwards? Read what applies after the free period and whether a payment method is needed. The guide to trial months and student subscriptions is a good companion here.
  5. Is there an alternative? Campus licences (Campuslizenzen) from your university are often a good starting point. More in our guide to campus licences.

Another example: the GitHub Student Developer Pack does not list countries on its page. Instead, it describes students at accredited educational institutions. Here it pays to read the terms themselves rather than assume a country restriction.

What Does the ChatGPT Offer Cost After the Free Period?

A worked example shows how the free period plays out. Assumption: you sign up for the offer, use all four free billing periods and do not cancel afterwards. From the fifth billing period onward, OpenAI states that US$20 per month applies (October 2026). For months five to twelve, that adds up to 8 times 20, or US$160. Assumption: exchange rates and taxes are not included.

The payment method matters too. The offer requires a valid payment method. According to OpenAI, subscriptions via the Apple App Store or Google Play are not supported.

What You Can Do Instead

If an offer does not apply to you, other routes to software and AI tools exist. Three of them are almost always worth checking before you pay:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a VPN work with the ChatGPT student offer?

No. The offer requires enrolment at an eligible US university. A different network address does not replace this requirement, and verification runs through SheerID with proof linked to the university.

Does the ChatGPT offer apply to students in Germany?

According to OpenAI’s help page, the offer is aimed at currently enrolled students at eligible US universities. The page does not name German universities. The provider’s help page shows the current status.

Is there a Google offer for students in Germany?

Google’s help page for the student trial of Google AI Pro names only students in the USA. Separately, Google One offers students discounts and bundles for Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro, including a 12-month AI Plus trial and a bundle with YouTube Premium. According to Google, these apply in all countries where these subscriptions are available, except Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia, so also in Germany. You need to be enrolled, confirm your student status through SheerID with an email address from your institution, and use a private Google account with a valid payment method. Members of a family group must leave the group first. The page names no deadline for redeeming the offer. An overview is in the guide to Google Gemini for students.

What happens if I provide false information?

False information during verification can lead to an offer being rejected or an account being suspended. The provider’s terms of use determine the consequences in each case. Only use offers whose requirements you actually meet.

Can I still use AI tools in my studies?

Yes, as long as your examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) and your university’s rules allow it. Also, do not enter personal data or unpublished research data, and check every AI output. More in the guide to data protection with AI tools.

What happens after my studies end?

It depends on the offer. Student offers are often tied to student status, while others move to a paid subscription after a fixed free period. An overview of subscriptions after graduation is in the guide to ending student status.

How to Proceed Now

  1. Open the provider’s page and check countries, type of institution and end date before you create an account.
  2. Work out the costs after the free period and put the date when the subscription ends in your calendar.
  3. Compare the offer with campus licences from your university or with free tiers from the provider.
  4. Claim only offers that apply to you, and keep your proof safe.
