The check for Google AI Plus can fail even if you are enrolled at a university. Google names several specific reasons, and most of them concern the Google account or the payment method. This guide explains the reasons and shows what helps in practice.

Short answer: According to Google’s help page, verification for Google AI Plus fails if you are a member of a family group, if the subscription runs through a third party, Pixel Pass or Google Fi, if you are signed in with a different account than when the SheerID check started, if your country is not supported, or if no accepted payment method is available (last updated: October 2026). It helps to work through these reasons one after another.

The essentials

  • Several of the reasons concern the Google account itself, not your student status.
  • Members of a family group are excluded. You must leave the family group first.
  • Subscriptions through third parties, Pixel Pass or Google Fi are excluded from the student offer.
  • The check must start and finish with the same account that you use to take out the subscription.
  • Without an accepted payment method, the subscription cannot be completed.

What Google lists as requirements

According to Google’s help page, you need three things. First, you must be enrolled at a university in a country where Google AI Plus and AI Pro are supported. Second, you confirm your status through SheerID with a university email address. Third, you need a personal Google account with an accepted payment method.

The exceptions list Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia. Germany is not on it. A country restriction is therefore unlikely for students at German universities. If the check still fails, the cause is almost always one of the points below.

Reason 1: You are in a family group

Members of a Google family group are excluded from the student offer. According to Google’s help, you must leave the family group before you can use the offer. Afterwards you activate it with your own account.

Reason 2: The subscription runs through a third party

A subscription purchased through a third party, through Pixel Pass or through Google Fi is excluded from the student offer. Check in the subscription settings of your Google account how the existing subscription was purchased. If it runs through a third party, cancel it there before you start the check.

Reason 3: You sign in with the wrong account

This is the reason Google itself points to. An error message often appears when you redeem the offer, because a different Google account is signed in than at the start of the SheerID check. The fix is simple: sign out, choose the account you started the check with, and complete the offer with exactly that account.

A private browser window helps if several accounts are signed in at once in your normal browser. Only the account you want stays active.

Reason 4: Your country is not eligible

The offer applies only to universities in countries where Google AI Plus and AI Pro are supported. According to Google, Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia are excluded. Germany is not excluded.

Your university must also be listed in the provider’s verification process. If it cannot be selected, a document often serves as proof. The guide Student verification with SheerID and similar services (in German) explains the process.

Reason 5: No accepted payment method

The subscription can only be completed with an accepted payment method. Google decides which methods are accepted. Store a payment method that you already use in your Google account, and check it before you start.

What helps when the check does not work

  1. Check whether you are in a family group and leave it if necessary.
  2. Clarify how your existing subscription was purchased. A third-party subscription blocks the offer.
  3. Start the check with the Google account you want to use for the subscription, and stay with that account until you complete it.
  4. Store an accepted payment method in your account.
  5. For the attempt, use a private browser window so that no other account is signed in.
  6. If the check keeps failing, verify that your university is listed in the process, and submit a current enrolment certificate as a second proof.

General notes on the SheerID check

SheerID is a verification service. In essence it answers one question: are you currently enrolled at a recognised university? The check concerns your status, not your grades or your field of study.

Common mistakes cost time. Many students sign up with a private email address, and the check then cannot be matched to a university. Others upload a document from the previous semester. Such a document is usually not accepted. Upload proof that covers the current period.

Also pay attention to data protection. Upload only the documents the check needs and read the provider’s notices. A sign-in through the university portal usually shares less data with the provider than an uploaded document. For the basics of the GDPR, see EUR-Lex.

What happens after your studies?

The offer depends on your status as a student. Whether and how it continues after de-registration is shown on Google’s page. Plan the regular price before you decide on an extension. For guidance, see When student status ends (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Why does the check fail even though I am enrolled?

Your student status is not the only factor. According to Google, the account, the payment method and the country also matter. If you use a family account, have a third-party subscription or are signed in with a different account, the check fails even with a valid status.

Is my university email address always enough?

Not always. The check runs through SheerID with a university email address. If your university cannot be selected in the process or the address is not accepted, a document often helps. It must cover the current period.

Can I switch accounts during the check?

A restart is the safest option. Start the check with the account you want to take out the subscription with. According to Google’s help, switching in the middle of the process often leads to an error message.

Is the twelve-month AI Pro offer also available in Germany?

According to Google’s help page, the twelve-month offer for AI Pro for students applies only in the United States. For Germany, the trial for AI Plus and the discounted AI Pro rate shown on Google’s page when you activate the offer apply.

What does the error message when redeeming mean?

According to Google’s help, it often means a different Google account is signed in than at the start of the check. Sign in with the correct account and start the check again.

What to do now

  1. Check whether you are in a family group and leave it if necessary.
  2. Clarify how your existing subscription was purchased and avoid third-party subscriptions.
  3. Start the check with the Google account you want to subscribe with and complete it with the same account.
  4. Store an accepted payment method and note the end date of the trial in your calendar.
