Unlocking student offers (Studentenangebote freischalten) works best in a fixed order: first the proof of status, then the trial periods you have already used, then the GitHub Student Developer Pack, and finally the individual offers. If you reverse this order, an offer may later become impossible to unlock. This guide shows the five steps and explains why they work in this sequence.
Short answer: First prepare your proof of status, then check which free trials you have already used, next verify the GitHub Student Developer Pack and finally unlock the individual offers. According to GitHub, student verification there lasts two years. Whether an offer applies in Germany becomes clear at sign-up with the provider. Last updated: October 2026, offers change often.
Why the order matters
Many student offers rely on the same proof: a university email address or a certificate of enrolment. Partners can also block activation through the GitHub Student Developer Pack if you have already redeemed a free period with them. The order makes sure that you first create the basis, then check for blocks, and only then start the individual offers.
| Step | What you do | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Proof | Prepare a university email or a dated proof of enrolment | GitHub accepts either one as a basis |
| 2. Trial periods | Note which providers you have already redeemed a free period with | Can block access via the pack |
| 3. GitHub Pack | Verify your student status with GitHub | Valid for two years according to GitHub |
| 4. Individual offers | Read the requirements and process on the provider’s page, then apply | Terms can change |
| 5. Deadlines | Note the end of verification and the end of your studies | Check offers regularly |
Which proof do you need first?
For GitHub, the basis is a university email address and/or an official, dated proof of enrolment, such as a current certificate of enrolment. So you do not necessarily need both. Prepare the documents as a PDF beforehand so you do not have to abort the process midway. Make sure the proof is current and legible. If you have changed your course of study, check whether the old certificate still shows your current studies.
One side effect of this order is that you see early which offers apply to you at all. Many providers address only certain types of higher education institution or certain countries, and a short look at the conditions settles this before you invest time in an application.
Have you already used a free period?
Before you unlock anything, check your accounts. An already redeemed free month with a partner can prevent the same offer from being reachable via the pack. According to GitHub’s terms, some partners do not allow promotional offers to be combined. Note which services you have already used a trial period with before you submit the next application.
In practice, keep a short list with provider, start date and length of each trial. If a free period is still running, enter its end in your deadlines so that you do not miss the switch to the regular plan.
Why GitHub comes before the individual offers
The GitHub Student Developer Pack bundles offers from third-party companies, and you access them through your GitHub profile. Because verification runs centrally there, it pays off before the individual offers. The agreement for each partner product, however, is concluded directly with the provider. Which offers work only with a GitHub login is covered in Sign in with GitHub: Welche Studi-Angebote nur über GitHub freischalten. The overview of the pack itself is in GitHub Student Developer Pack: Price, Requirements and Verification.
A practical advantage: once your verification is in place, you can sign in with your existing account at partners that offer a GitHub login. Whether that works for a given offer is stated in its description. You only need to complete verification once, and it must be renewed after two years. Offers that run through the pack include Appwrite for Students: Offer, Price and Use in Your Studies, Sentry for Students: Offer, Price and Use During Your Studies, Termius for Students: Offer, Price and Use at University and Camber Cloud for Students: Offer, Price and Use at University.
How do you unlock the individual offers?
Each provider has its own conditions, verification procedure and validity. Find the provider’s student page, read the requirements and the process in full, and only then submit your application. Also check beforehand which proof the provider requires, since requirements differ from case to case. Do not rely on blog posts if the provider’s own page says something different.
Do not apply for everything at once. If you start several offers in parallel, you quickly lose track of validity and login details. Work through your list one after the other and note for each offer the confirmation email, the period and the account you signed up with.
An example of an individual route is the Google offer for students. Google’s help page names a 12-month trial of Google AI Plus, a reduced price for Google AI Pro and a bundle of Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium. Google confirms eligibility through SheerID with the email address of your educational institution. If redemption fails, first check which Google account is signed in, because it must be the one you used to start the verification. Members of a family group must leave the group first. According to the help page, the offer applies in all countries where Google AI Plus and AI Pro are available except Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia, so it also applies in Germany. After the trial, the subscription converts into a regular paid plan, and Google notifies you in advance. The plan details are in Google AI Plus for Students: Offer, Price and Use.
When do you have to prove your status again?
According to GitHub, student verification lasts two years. After that you must confirm your status again. Many individual offers also end with your studies or after a fixed period. Enter the dates early in your calendar so that you are not surprised when access suddenly ends.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a university email for GitHub?
Not necessarily. GitHub names as the basis a university email address and/or an official, dated proof of enrolment. If one of these is missing, the document route helps. Make sure the date on the document matches your current enrolment.
Who is eligible for the GitHub Student Developer Pack?
Students enrolled in a course of study that leads to a degree or diploma are eligible. Teachers, researchers and staff are not, although they can receive other free or discounted GitHub access. Users must be at least 13 years old.
Why does an offer not work even though I am verified?
A common reason is a free period already redeemed with the same partner. Some partners do not allow combining offers with other promotions. Also check whether the provider has changed or ended its offer, since that can happen without notice.
Can partners change their offers in the pack?
Yes. According to GitHub, offers can be changed at the request of the partner offering the benefit. GitHub tries to give advance notice, which does not always succeed. In case of disruptions, the changelog to which GitHub refers helps.
What if an application is rejected?
Providers often state the reason in their reply. Then submit the required proof instead of applying repeatedly with the same documents. The provider’s help page, which describes verification and deadlines, is also useful. Note the outcome so you can trace the process later.
Does the GitHub Pack also apply in Germany?
GitHub does not list countries in its terms. Check each offer individually and read with each partner whether students from Germany are admitted.
