Definition. A subject semester (Fachsemester) is a semester in which you are enrolled in a particular field of study. The count affects deadlines, for example for the BAföG proof of performance. The former upper limit on subject semesters for student health insurance has been dropped since 2020, so it no longer determines how long you are covered.
Why the count matters in your studies
Many rules in higher education are linked to semester numbers, and the count is not always obvious. A subject semester is the time spent in your chosen field, not every semester at the university. If you change your course of study, check carefully whether previous semesters count before you calculate any deadlines.

An example of changing your course
You change to a different course after your third subject semester. For BAföG, a change of field up to the fourth semester generally causes no disadvantage. After that, the regular proof-of-performance rules apply. Clarify before the change with your Studierendenwerk which semesters count.
What the BAföG reform could change
The government draft of the BAföG reform removes the proof of performance under § 48. The draft is not yet law. Until it is passed, today’s rules apply, so keep planning deadlines according to the current position.

Frequently asked questions
Do semesters at another university count as subject semesters?
That depends on the course of study and on recognition. The university and the Studierendenwerk decide which semesters count. Ask in writing before you change.
Is there still a limit on subject semesters for health insurance?
No. The former upper limit on subject semesters has not applied since 2020. For student insurance, the age limit of 30 and extensions for recognised reasons are what matter today.
What happens if I miss the proof of performance?
Without the required proof, funding can lapse or be suspended. Speak to your Studierendenwerk in good time if your studies are delayed.
