Studying in Mannheim means planning three costs together: the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) of the University of Mannheim, the rent and your health insurance. The university lists its fee in three items, and the housing market sits in the same catchment area as Heidelberg. This guide separates what is documented from what you have to check yourself against offers.
Short answer: The semester fee of the University of Mannheim is 194 euros for the spring/summer semester 2027: 80 euros administrative fee, 100 euros for student services (Studierendenwerk) and 14 euros for the student body (Verfasste Studierendenschaft). Re-registration runs from 15 October to 1 December 2026, and a late payment adds 20 euros. Health insurance for students costs roughly 143 to 148 euros a month nationwide (assumption: additional contribution of 2.9 percent). Last updated: October 2026.

What does the semester fee at the University of Mannheim cost?
The university’s fee page lists three items and states the amount for the spring/summer semester 2027. The retrieved version does not explicitly say whether the same sum applied to the current winter semester 2026/27. The details on items, deadlines and the consequences of late payment are in our guide Semester fee University of Mannheim 2026/27.
| Item | Amount per semester | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Administrative fee | 80 euros | Spring/summer semester 2027 |
| Student services | 100 euros | Spring/summer semester 2027 |
| Student body (Verfasste Studierendenschaft) | 14 euros | Spring/summer semester 2027 |
| Total | 194 euros | University of Mannheim, retrieved October 2026 |
In addition, the university names tuition for certain groups: 1,500 euros for students from non-EU/EEA countries who are liable for fees, and 650 euros for a second degree that requires a fee. These are not part of the semester fee that all students pay. Assumption: if you pay 194 euros for six semesters, that comes to 1,164 euros in semester fees for a bachelor’s degree.
When do you have to re-register in Mannheim?
The university publishes its re-registration periods on the page with the semester dates. For the winter semester 2026/27 the deadline ended on 15 June 2026, and for the spring/summer semester 2027 it runs from 15 October to 1 December 2026. A late payment incurs a 20 euro late fee. If you have completed your studies and do not re-register, the university deregisters you (Exmatrikulation) ex officio at the end of the semester.
What matters in practice is the day the money reaches the university’s account. Transfer it a few days early and state your matriculation number and name as the payment reference.
What does housing cost in Mannheim?
For Mannheim we have neither a dormitory price from the student services nor any other rent figure with a source and date. We therefore do not name a rent. You can, however, calculate what is due every month apart from the rent, and add the all-in rent (Warmmiete) from a concrete offer.
| Fixed item | Calculation | Amount per month |
|---|---|---|
| Semester fee | 194 euros divided by 6 months (assumption) | 32.33 euros |
| Health and long-term care insurance up to age 22 | Table below (assumption: additional contribution 2.9 percent) | 142.96 euros |
| Fixed costs excluding rent | Total | 175.29 euros |
| All-in rent | Value from your offer | Enter it |
Always compare offers as all-in rent including electricity and internet, and check the deposit and whether the lease is time-limited. Our guide Affordable student housing: strategy, portals and costs explains how to assess listings. For the housing market of the neighbouring city, see Studying in Heidelberg: Costs, Semester Fee and Rooms 2026.
Is there a semester ticket in Mannheim?
Neither the fee page nor the re-registration page of the university lists a semester ticket as an item. Ask the student body whether an offer exists and what it costs before you buy a ticket. The guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs puts the semester ticket and the Germany ticket into context.
Which health insurance applies to students in Mannheim?
Students who are family insured (familienversichert) are exempt from compulsory insurance until their 25th birthday while in training, as long as their total income stays at or below 565 euros a month (2026), or 603 euros for a mini-job (Minijob) (§ 10 SGB V). Otherwise, compulsory insurance for students applies, whose contribution does not depend on the location of the university.
| Component | Calculation | Amount per month |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance without additional contribution | 10.22% of 855 euros | 87.38 euros |
| Additional contribution (assumption: average 2.9%) | 2.9% of 855 euros | 24.80 euros |
| Long-term care insurance up to age 22 or with a child | 3.6% of 855 euros | 30.78 euros |
| Long-term care insurance from age 23 without a child | 4.2% of 855 euros | 35.91 euros |
| Total up to age 22 (assumption 2.9%) | 87.38 + 24.80 + 30.78 | 142.96 euros |
| Total from age 23 without a child (assumption 2.9%) | 87.38 + 24.80 + 35.91 | 148.09 euros |
Sources for the table: § 236 SGB V (contribution assessment base, 855 euros since October 2024) and the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet on calculation parameters 2026 (as of 1 January 2026). Your own additional contribution may differ from the average, which shifts the total accordingly.
Whether private cover suits you depends on health, career goals and life planning. An exemption from compulsory insurance is possible only within three months of the start of the obligation, requires entitlement to other cover and cannot be revoked (§ 8 SGB V). The trade-offs are covered in our guide PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation, and a personal assessment is offered by Academycon (in German).
What funding and earnings limits apply?
For students living away from home who are under 25, the German Student Services Organisation (Deutsches Studierendenwerk) names a maximum of 855 euros a month for BAföG (federal training assistance): 475 euros basic amount plus 380 euros housing allowance. For 25- to 29-year-olds it is 992 euros (as of January 2026, DSW FAQ). A mini-job remains below the threshold of 603 euros a month in 2026; from 1 January 2027 the limit is 633 euros (Minijob-Zentrale). A draft bill foresees a housing allowance of 440 euros from the summer semester 2027, but it had not been passed in October 2026. The current status is in our guide BAföG Reform 2027: What Is Changing and When. Details on the application are in BAföG 2026: Eligibility, Amount and Repayment Explained.
