A side job and a small business of your own are, for many students, the first step into self-employment. The combination is possible, but it quickly becomes complicated because health insurance, the mini-job threshold, BAföG and taxes interact. This guide sorts out the limits and shows which offices to ask before you start.
Short answer: A side job and part-time self-employment can be combined as long as your self-employment stays within the weekly limit of 20 hours. For 2026 the mini-job threshold is 603 euros gross per month, and family insurance ends above 565 euros. Last updated: November 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- According to the DAK health insurer, part-time self-employment is limited to at most 20 hours per week. More counts as a main occupation.
- The mini-job threshold is 603 euros gross per month in 2026 and is planned to rise to 633 euros in 2027.
- Your health insurance fund decides on the individual case whether your activity counts as part-time.
- For limits, income from the side job and from self-employment is looked at together.
- For BAföG, report income early, because adjustments made later can cause problems.
How does the health insurance fund check whether you are self-employed part-time?
The German consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale) points out that the health insurance fund decides whether an activity is part-time. More than 20 hours per week points, in its account, to a main occupation. This is not a rigid statutory rule but an indication examined case by case. It is therefore worth adding up the planned hours for the side job and the self-employment and writing them down.
A simple weekly overview helps, with working hours for both activities, lecture periods and exam phases. If the total exceeds 20 hours in individual weeks, ask your fund before it becomes a problem. Clarifying this in advance is much simpler than settling back contributions retroactively. The fund looks at the overall picture of hours, income and student status.
Which income limits apply?
Income limits determine whether you can stay in your parents’ family insurance and which thresholds apply to a mini job. The table summarises the values that follow from the sources named. The year in which you work is always the decisive one.
| Area | Rule | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family insurance, income limit | 565 euros per month | 2026 | DAK |
| Mini-job threshold | 603 euros gross per month | 2026 | § 8 SGB IV |
| Mini-job threshold | 633 euros gross per month | 2027 | Minijob-Zentrale |
| Self-employment, part-time | At most 20 hours per week | As of 1 October 2026 | DAK |
| Small business, turnover limits | 25,000 euros in the previous year, 100,000 euros in the current year | Since 1 January 2025 | § 19 UStG |
The mini-job threshold is the benchmark for the side job, whereas family insurance has its own limit. The two figures cannot simply be equated, because they concern different rules. A worked example shows how this works in practice.
Assumption: you earn 450 euros per month in a side job and make an additional 200 euros profit per month from a small online sale. The total is then 650 euros. That exceeds the family insurance income limit of 565 euros for 2026. The mini-job threshold of 603 euros applies only to the mini job itself. Clarify this with your fund before you expand the sales.
What does the combination mean for BAföG?
According to the German Student Union (Deutsches Studierendenwerk), income up to the mini-job threshold does not reduce BAföG. Above that level, income is taken into account. Whether and to what extent profits from self-employment are counted depends on the calculation in your individual case, and your BAföG office decides that. Declare all income completely.
Timing matters. Report changes in income early to your BAföG office, so that no overpayment arises which you would have to repay later. Ask for the calculation in writing if you expect larger profits.
Why is the combination worth it at all?
The combination of a side job and your own business pays off mainly when both activities fit into your daily routine and you can divide your time clearly. A fixed side job with planable shifts brings security, while self-employment offers room to grow. In exam periods, it is better to pause the business than to run both at full capacity.
The calculation is only realistic when you know the net return of the business. Deduct costs for materials, software, shipping and, where relevant, insurance before you judge the profit. A business that brings little return after all deductions rarely justifies the effort alongside studies and a job.
How does self-employment affect taxes and VAT?
Profits from self-employment belong in your income tax return, even if the side job already has wage tax deducted. For turnover, the small business rule under § 19 UStG applies if you stay within the limits of 25,000 euros in the previous year and 100,000 euros in the current year. Then VAT is not charged, but income tax remains. A surplus of income over expenses calculation helps you keep both income types apart.
Separating the income is central. Keep wages from the side job and proceeds from the business apart, so that you can later show where each amount came from in your tax return and in a BAföG application.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to register the self-employment with the trade office if I earn on the side?
If you act regularly and with an intention to make a profit, a trade notification is likely. Under § 14 of the Trade Regulation Act (Gewerbeordnung), every trade must be notified. Check your individual case with the trade office beforehand, because the boundary between a trade and a freelance profession is not always clear.
Can my employer learn anything about my self-employment from the side job?
As a rule, your employer does not need information about self-employment that takes place outside the employment relationship. However, check your employment contract for clauses on secondary employment, since some contracts require notice or approval.
What happens if I exceed the 20-hour limit?
According to the DAK, your self-employment then counts as a main occupation. Your student health insurance can end, and you may have to take out voluntary insurance. Clarify this early with your fund, so that you do not have to pay contributions retroactively.
Can I work self-employed alongside a scholarship?
Scholarships come with their own rules from the funding body. The Verbraucherzentrale advises students with a scholarship or an education fund to obtain the funder’s consent before taking a side job. The same logic applies to self-employment.
Does this also apply to working students with a fixed employment contract?
Yes, an employment contract does not change the hours calculation for self-employment. What matters is that you consider both activities together, because the health insurance fund looks at the overall picture. Speak to your employer as well if the contract regulates secondary employment.
What to do next
- List all planned hours for the side job and the self-employment, separated into lecture periods and semester breaks.
- Clarify the classification with your health insurance fund and keep the answer in writing.
- Report changes in income to your BAföG office or funding body before the earnings begin.
- Separate accounts and receipts for wages and business proceeds, so that the tax return is clean.
