The semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is made up of two parts that are set by different bodies: the contribution to the student body (Studierendenschaft) and the contribution to the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk). For the winter semester 2026/27 the total comes to EUR 366.90. The largest share is the mobility contribution for the semester ticket.
Short answer: According to an information letter dated 24 March 2026, with an addendum dated 30 April 2026, the semester fee at the University of Mainz for the winter semester 2026/27 totals EUR 366.90: EUR 252.90 to the student body, of which EUR 229.90 covers local public transport, and EUR 114.00 to the Studierendenwerk. The deadline overview names 15 July as the re-registration date, without a year. For the winter semester 2026/27, it would already have passed in October 2026.

How high is the semester fee in Mainz?
The total is not set out in a single statute. It appears in an information letter from the University Medical Center Mainz (Universitätsmedizin Mainz) that combines both parts of the fee. The letter is dated 24 March 2026 and was supplemented on 30 April 2026. It is therefore not a page from the central student administration, but a notice passed on to staff and students of medicine. The individual items match the fee regulations of the student body.
| Item | Amount per semester |
|---|---|
| Public transport entitlement (mobility contribution) | EUR 229.90 |
| Other statutory tasks of the student body | EUR 17.10 |
| Student emergency fund (Studentischer Hilfsfonds) | EUR 2.75 |
| Student sports committee | EUR 1.60 |
| Psychotherapy counselling centre | EUR 1.55 |
| Subtotal student body | EUR 252.90 |
| Studierendenwerk Mainz | EUR 114.00 |
| Total | EUR 366.90 |
Unlike universities in Hesse, the letter does not list a separate administrative fee (Verwaltungskostenbeitrag). It mentions no other charges.
What does the JGU semester ticket include?
The mobility contribution of EUR 229.90 pays for the entitlement to use local public transport. It is EUR 3.10 higher than the amount that other universities charge for the Germany semester ticket (Deutschlandsemesterticket). The documents reviewed do not explain the difference, so the breakdown of the mobility contribution remains open. For how this compares with the Germany ticket, see the guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs.
The other items of the student body are small. Together they come to EUR 23.00, of which EUR 17.10 goes to the statutory tasks of the student body.
Until when must you re-register in Mainz?
The university’s deadline overview for the start of studies lists the entry “Re-registration at JGU for the coming semester (transfer the semester fee) until 15 July” under the second semester. The winter semester 2026/27 is not explicitly named there. The link to this semester follows only from the entry’s position in the sequence. Check the deadline in the student portal.
The document does not mention a grace period or a late-payment charge. For what generally applies if a deadline is missed, see Semester Fee Deadline: Re-enrolment and Consequences.
Which figures are confirmed and which are still open?
| Figure | Status |
|---|---|
| EUR 366.90 total | Information letter dated 24 March 2026, with addendum of 30 April 2026 |
| EUR 252.90 student body | Fee regulations of the student body for the winter semester 2026/27 |
| EUR 114.00 Studierendenwerk | Notice from the Studierendenwerk dated 10 February 2026, fee unchanged |
| Re-registration deadline 15 July | Deadline overview for the start of studies, status May 2026, semester not explicitly named |
Assumption: the amount shown in the re-registration portal matches the information letter. In that case you transfer EUR 252.90 plus EUR 114.00, a total of EUR 366.90. If the amount in your portal differs, the portal amount takes precedence.
How does EUR 366.90 compare with other universities?
A comparison shows mainly how strongly the ticket determines the total. In the same semester the total at the University of Regensburg was EUR 208.00, at Marburg EUR 424.80. Mainz sits in between, without an administrative fee but with a high mobility contribution. The figures are only partly comparable, because each university bundles its items differently. An overview with more cities is available in Semester Fees by University: Data for 30 Cities.
| University | Total winter semester 2026/27 | Ticket share |
|---|---|---|
| University of Regensburg | EUR 208.00 | EUR 126.00 |
| JGU Mainz | EUR 366.90 | EUR 229.90 |
| University of Rostock | EUR 352.00 | EUR 226.80 |
| University of Marburg | EUR 424.80 | EUR 230.50 |
Assumption: you study for six semesters in a bachelor’s programme and pay EUR 366.90 each time. That comes to EUR 2,201.40 in total, or EUR 61.15 per month of a semester.
