Habilitation and junior professorship are the two main routes to a professorship in Germany. The habilitation has traditionally been the classic qualification, while the junior professorship (Juniorprofessur) is an independent professorship for a fixed term. Anyone planning an academic career should know both routes before accepting posts, and keep the deadlines in view.

Short answer: In Germany, a habilitation has traditionally been a requirement for appointment to a professorship, although equivalent achievements are now also recognised. A junior professorship is generally set for six years and can be linked to a tenure track option. For fixed-term qualification posts under the WissZeitVG, the general maximum after the doctorate is six years, and nine years in medicine (status October 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Habilitation is the classic route to a chair and has traditionally been a requirement for appointment.
  • Habilitation-equivalent achievements are now recognised, for example leading an independent research group or the Emmy Noether Programme.
  • The junior professorship is usually set for six years. A tenure track option can lead to a permanent professorship.
  • According to the University of Saarland, a habilitation is not required for professorships at universities of applied sciences, where practical experience matters most.
  • Fixed-term qualification posts fall under the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG). The general maximum after the doctorate is usually six years.

What is the difference between habilitation and junior professorship?

A habilitation is a qualification that you usually earn through a post at the university. It includes a habilitation thesis, a teaching sample and a lecture followed by discussion, as the University of Saarland describes it. A junior professorship, by contrast, is itself a professorship. It is aimed at postdoctoral researchers who teach and research independently, and it is for a fixed term.

How long may the qualification phase last?

The length of fixed-term academic posts is governed by the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (WissZeitVG). Under section 2(1), sentence 1, a person who has not yet obtained a doctorate may be employed on a fixed term for up to six years if the post serves their own academic qualification. After the doctorate, sentence 2 sets a general maximum of six years, or nine years in medicine. Periods before the doctorate and periods of doctoral work without employment shorten this period if together they are less than six years.

This matters directly for habilitation and junior professorship, because the time until an appointment can become tight. Extensions are possible under section 2(5), for example for caring for children under 18, for leave for academic work, or for further education. They should normally not exceed two years. More on the time limits is in our guide WissZeitVG 2026: Befristung und Höchstdauer für Doktoranden (in German).

  1. Assumption: you were on a fixed-term contract for two years before your doctorate. This period shortens the time after the doctorate.
  2. The maximum after the doctorate is six years. After deducting the two years, at most four years remain.
  3. Check whether an extension ground under section 2(5) applies, and have it confirmed in writing.

Which requirements apply to the junior professorship?

The junior professorship is aimed at postdoctoral researchers. It is usually set for six years and can be linked to a tenure track option. After a probation period, usually also six years for a tenure track professorship, the transition to a permanent chair normally follows. Whether your contract includes such an option is stated in the call and the contract. Ask about it specifically, because conditions differ between states and universities.

When is a habilitation not needed?

At universities of applied sciences, according to the University of Saarland, a habilitation is not required, and practical experience counts most. At universities the habilitation has traditionally remained an important requirement. It is increasingly supplemented by habilitation-equivalent achievements, such as leading an independent research group for around five years, usually funded by third-party money, or the Emmy Noether Programme with a duration of up to six years.

Common questions

Do I have to habilitate to become a professor?

Not always. The University of Saarland describes the habilitation as the traditional requirement, but names habilitation-equivalent achievements as a recognised alternative. For professorships at universities of applied sciences, according to the same source, no habilitation is required. Check which qualification the call asks for.

Is a junior professorship safer than a habilitation?

That cannot be said in general. A junior professorship is fixed-term, but with a tenure track it often offers a clear perspective. A habilitation does not automatically lead to a professorship, because an appointment must still follow. What counts are the call, the contract and the commitments of the university.

How does the WissZeitVG fit with habilitation?

Posts that serve a habilitation count as qualification posts under the WissZeitVG. The fixed term is then tied to the maximum period. Extensions are possible, for example for childcare or leave, and should normally be no more than two years.

Can I habilitate while holding a post?

Habilitation and a post can usually be combined if the post serves academic qualification (section 2(1) WissZeitVG). Your faculty clarifies whether your post counts as a qualification post. Have this confirmed in writing before you plan your timetable.

What is a tenure track?

Tenure track describes a route in which a professorship that is initially fixed-term can turn into a permanent chair after a probation period. The University of Saarland names six years as the usual period. The specific criteria should be set out in the appointment agreement and be clear before you accept.

Checklist for your decision

  • Does your field in your preferred area require a habilitation, or are habilitation-equivalent achievements enough?
  • How long is the fixed-term phase, and which extensions are provided?
  • Is there a tenure track option, and are the probation criteria set out in writing?
  • Which equipment, teaching load and support are provided?

What to do next

  1. Find out whether your field requires a habilitation, and check calls in your preferred area.
  2. Read the WissZeitVG and work out how much time is left for your qualification after the doctorate.
  3. Compare tenure track offers, junior professorships and habilitation posts by duration, support and prospects.
  4. Talk early with your supervisor or faculty about your target profile and timetable.
  5. Apply only once the contract, duration and probation criteria are in writing.
