A postdoc (postdoctoral researcher) is a research position after the doctorate that is usually fixed-term and serves further scientific qualification. The post brings research experience and publications, but also uncertainty about what comes next. This guide explains how long a post may be fixed-term, how the salary is set and which health insurance applies.

Short answer: After the doctorate, universities and research institutes may fix a post under the German Fixed-Term Research Contracts Act (WissZeitVG) for up to six years, in medicine up to nine years. A fixed term is also allowed if the post is mainly funded by third-party money. Below 6,450 euros gross per month (2026), you are in statutory health insurance. Last updated: October 2026.

The most important points

  • After the doctorate, fixed terms at universities may last up to six years, in medicine up to nine years.
  • If the post is mainly funded by third-party money, a fixed term is also allowed, and its length should match the project period.
  • A reliable salary comes only from the collective agreement or your contract. There is no official average figure.
  • Below the compulsory insurance threshold of 6,450 euros per month (2026), you are in statutory health insurance (GKV).
  • If you do not find a post after the postdoc phase, clarify your social security early.

What is a postdoc?

Postdoc is short for postdoctoral researcher, a person who has finished the doctorate but does not yet hold a permanent professorship. The phase often lasts several years. It serves your own research, building publications and often preparing for a habilitation (a second qualification thesis) or a junior professorship. Typically the post is fixed-term and tied to a project, a chair or a third-party funded project.

How long may a postdoc post be fixed-term?

For universities and non-university research institutes, the Fixed-Term Research Contracts Act (WissZeitVG, in German) governs fixed terms. After the doctorate, fixed terms of up to six years are permitted, in medicine up to nine years (§ 2 para. 1 sentence 2 WissZeitVG). The statutory text was checked in October 2026. Before you decide, confirm that it has not changed.

Third-party fundingpermitted if the post is mainly funded by third-party money§ 2 para. 2 WissZeitVG, the length should match the approved project period

The maximum term refers to all fixed terms taken together that the law allows after the doctorate at the institution. So the number of earlier contracts matters. Ask before you sign how the term is calculated.

What does a postdoc earn?

Pay often follows the collective agreement for the German states (TV-L, in German) when the post belongs to a state institution. The pay grade is set in your contract. A figure without a collective agreement would be unreliable, so we do not name an amount here. The official tables are published by the Tarifgemeinschaft deutscher Länder (TdL, in German). For third-party funded posts, the approved project budget is decisive, not only the collective agreement. Compare the offer with the alternatives, for example in Promotionsstelle oder Stipendium (in German).

Health insurance for postdocs

With an employment contract you are insured in statutory health insurance (GKV) as long as your gross pay stays below the compulsory insurance threshold. In 2026 this was 6,450 euros per month or 77,400 euros per year. The general contribution rate is 14.6 percent and the average additional contribution is 2.9 percent (GKV-Spitzenverband, status 1 January 2026). For 2027 the official estimating panel calculated an average additional contribution of 2.9 percent in October 2026. The official setting is still pending, so this figure is an estimate.

Gross salary per monthHealth insuranceWhat to note
below 6,450 euros (2026)compulsory statutory insuranceEmployer and employee share the contribution
above 6,450 euros (2026)choice between GKV and PKV (private insurance)PKV depends on age and health, and returning to GKV is subject to conditions

Whether private insurance makes sense for you cannot be decided in general. It can suit higher incomes, but it carries its own premium risks in old age, and families weigh it differently. Background on health insurance during the doctorate is in Health Insurance for PhD Students in Germany.

Worked example for deductions

Assumption: 4,000 euros gross per month, no children and older than 23, additional contribution 2.9 percent, calculation basis 2026.

  1. Health insurance: (14.6 + 2.9) percent divided by 2 gives 8.75 percent, that is 350.00 euros.
  2. Long-term care insurance: 3.6 percent divided by 2 is 1.8 percent, that is 72.00 euros. The childless surcharge of 0.6 percentage points is paid by you alone: 24.00 euros.
  3. Pension insurance: 18.6 percent divided by 2 is 9.3 percent, that is 372.00 euros.
  4. Total: 818.00 euros. Unemployment insurance and income tax are not part of this calculation.

You can calculate income tax with the tax calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (bmf-steuerrechner.de, in German).

Frequently asked questions

Can a postdoc post be extended after six years?

After the statutory maximum, a further fixed-term post under the WissZeitVG is possible only under narrow conditions. Whether a third-party funded or permanent post can follow depends on the project and the institution. Clarify this early with your research group.

Does the WissZeitVG also apply to posts in industry?

No. The law applies to universities and research institutes. Companies follow the general fixed-term rules, above all § 14 TzBfG (Part-Time and Fixed-Term Employment Act). The difference is explained in Promotion in der Industrie: Gehalt und Vertrag (in German).

Will I get unemployment benefit when the post ends?

If you become unemployed after a fixed-term contract, you may receive unemployment benefit (ALG I) under certain conditions. Health insurance then continues differently than during employment. The details are in Arbeitslos nach der Promotion (in German).

Does the postdoc phase affect my pension?

As an employee you pay into the statutory pension insurance while you are in compulsory employment. Gaps mainly arise in periods without contributions, for example during some scholarships or periods without work. The connection is explained in Rentenlücke durch Promotion (in German).

Is a postdoc post always the better choice?

It can strengthen research and your network, but it brings fixed terms and uncertainty. If you aim for a permanent position outside academia, an industry role may suit you better. An honest comparison before you decide helps.

What to do now

  1. Check the term of your contract and count all earlier fixed terms at the institution.
  2. Ask about the project and its funding, especially for third-party funded posts.
  3. Set the salary using the collective agreement or your contract and calculate the deductions.
  4. Decide before you start whether GKV or PKV suits your situation.
  5. Plan for the time after the fixed term early, including your application strategy and social security.
