Short answer: You can earn money on TikTok through platform payouts, paid partnerships or commissions from referral links. Reliable figures for typical earnings do not exist, because reach, niche and engagement vary widely. Once money comes in, tax duties, turnover limits and advertising labelling rules apply (last updated: November 2026).

“Earning money on TikTok” sounds like a quick fix for the rent. The truth lies in between. Some creators build a noticeable side income with videos, while many earn little or nothing for a long time. This guide shows which income sources exist, why the range is so wide and which tax and legal duties you should keep in mind from the first euro.

Key points at a glance

  • Income sources: platform payouts, partnerships, commissions and your own offers.
  • Earnings: the range is wide, because reach, audience and engagement vary strongly.
  • Tax: income is taxable, even when it is small.
  • Turnover limits: the small business exemption applies up to 25,000 euros in the previous year and 100,000 euros in the current year.
  • Advertising: paid content and referral links must be recognisable as advertising.

Which income sources exist on TikTok?

Creators earn in different ways. The main ones are payouts that the platform ties to certain programmes, paid partnerships with brands, commissions from referral links and your own offers such as courses, templates or merchandise. Each route has different requirements and risks.

  • Platform payouts: depend on programmes, minimum thresholds and rules that can change.
  • Partnerships: a fee per post, depending on audience, conversions and negotiation.
  • Affiliate links: commission on sales, depending on clicks, buying intent and programme terms.
  • Own products: courses, templates or merchandise, requiring preparation and your own customer base.

Why earnings vary so much

The gap between creators who earn little and those who earn well is large, because the decisive factors vary a lot. A niche with a high-spending audience brings different fees than a broad entertainment topic. Engagement, consistency, algorithms and platform rules that can change also play a role. A single success story therefore says little about what you will achieve yourself.

Effort belongs in the calculation as well. Planning, filming, editing, communication with brands and analysing numbers all take time, and that time is missing from your studies or another side job. If you count the hours per euro honestly, you often get a more sober picture than advertising suggests.

Realistic or myth?

The myth says: quick money with little effort. The realistic picture is more often a side income that grows over months or years and fluctuates strongly. The overview below shows what each route depends on.

Tax: when does content become a trade?

Income from creator work is taxable. Whether you must treat it as a trade (Gewerbe) or as a freelance activity depends on the type and scale of the work. Our guide on the classification as freelance or trade (in German) explains the differences. For many students with small income, VAT matters little because the small business exemption applies.

The small business exemption under § 19 UStG (in German) applies with prior-year turnover up to 25,000 euros and current-year turnover up to 100,000 euros. The Finanzamt Baden-Württemberg explains the rule on its page on the small business exemption (in German). Details on the limits are in our guide to the small business exemption 2025.

Labelling advertising and commissions

Paid partnerships and referral links must be recognisable to viewers. A note such as “advertising” or “paid partnership” belongs at the start of the post or directly next to the link, not in a hidden description. Publishing advertising without labelling risks warnings and costs you the trust of your community.

The same applies to product recommendations: say honestly whether you received money or free products. This transparency is not an obstacle but part of a credible presence.

Keep studies and funding in view

Income from TikTok affects other areas too. If you receive BAföG, your income counts towards the grant, and the income limits must be observed. Our guide on BAföG and side jobs (in German) shows what to watch. Plan enough time for your studies as well, because exam phases demand focus.

Read contracts carefully

Partnership contracts often contain rights to use your content, exclusivity clauses and cancellation rules. Using the content beyond the agreed period can require extra payment, and some contracts forbid promoting similar brands. Ask for the terms in writing before you produce content. Skipping this step often costs more money than any fee.

Simple record keeping

Even with small amounts, an overview with date, platform, type of income, amount and, where available, invoice or contract is worth keeping. A spreadsheet is enough. It keeps your income visible for a tax return, a funding application or a conversation with the tax office.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live on TikTok income?

For most students that is not the normal case. Anyone who wants to live from it needs stable income over a long period, a broad base and financial reserves for weak months. Plan with a side income rather than a full-time alternative.

Do I have to pay tax on gifts from viewers?

Income from gifts or donations can also be relevant for tax. Whether and how it is treated depends on the individual case. If you are unsure, ask the tax office or a tax adviser.

How do I start without taking risks?

Start without advance payments. Do not pay fees for courses that promise quick riches. Record your income from the start, so that you do not have to reconstruct it for a later tax return.

When do I need a trade registration?

The answer depends on the type and scale of your activity. An overview of the classification is in our guide on freelance or trade (in German).

What to do now

  1. Open a simple account for your creator income, separate from your private money.
  2. Record every payment with date, source and amount.
  3. Label every paid partnership and every referral link clearly as advertising.
  4. After a few months, check whether the turnover limits and the classification still fit.
