Your career start as a veterinarian begins with your licence (Approbation), usually followed by a job in a small animal, mixed or large animal practice, a clinic or a public authority. No collective agreement for veterinarians that applies across Germany is documented. Pay is therefore set by the employment contract, the region and the type of practice.

Short answer: No uniform starting salary for employed veterinarians that applies across Germany is documented. For comparison, the salary atlas of the Federal Employment Agency is useful. If your annual earnings stay below EUR 77,400 (2026 limit), you are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance. Last updated: October 2026.

Key points

  • No general collective agreement for veterinarians is documented. Pay is set in the employment contract.
  • The salary atlas of the Federal Employment Agency shows pay by occupation and region. It is a guide, not a contract basis.
  • Employees with annual earnings below EUR 77,400 (2026) are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance.
  • Self-employed vets are voluntarily insured. The calculated minimum contribution for 2026 is EUR 222.80 per month.
  • Disability insurance assesses your last job. The referral clause to other activities is an important point in this profession.

How is a veterinarian’s salary set?

Without a sector-wide collective agreement, the employment contract decides. It covers base pay, possible allowances for on-call or emergency duty, leave and further training. On-call arrangements can change total pay considerably. Ask about the duty roster and how emergency duty is paid before you accept.

For comparison, the Salary atlas (Entgeltatlas) of the Federal Employment Agency (in German) shows pay based on social insurance data, grouped by occupation and region. Because occupations are grouped, the figures may not match veterinary work exactly. Use it as orientation and compare with concrete offers.

What does health insurance cost you in your first job?

Employees are compulsorily insured as long as they stay below the compulsory insurance limit, which is EUR 77,400 per year in 2026 (Section 6 of the Social Code Book V (SGB V), gesetze-im-internet.de (in German)). The general contribution rate is 14.6 percent and the average additional rate is 2.9 percent. Employer and employee share both parts equally. Care insurance adds 3.6 percent. Childless people from age 23 pay the 0.6 percentage point surcharge alone (Federal Ministry of Health, childless surcharge (in German)).

Assumption: gross salary EUR 3,800 per month, statutory health insurance, childless from age 23, status 2026.

  1. Health insurance share: 8.75 percent of EUR 3,800 is EUR 332.50.
  2. Care insurance share: 1.8 percent of EUR 3,800 is EUR 68.40.
  3. Childless surcharge, paid by you alone: 0.6 percent of EUR 3,800 is EUR 22.80.
  4. Total: 332.50 plus 68.40 plus 22.80 is EUR 423.70 per month.

Income tax and pension and unemployment insurance are not included. Calculate net pay with the tax and contribution calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (in German). The contribution rates come from the GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on contribution figures, status 1 January 2026 (in German).

When does disability cover matter most for veterinarians?

The job brings risks that are less common in an office, such as physical work, falls, injuries from animals and shift work. Whether such problems lead to permanent disability cannot be predicted. That is why the insurer checks whether you can still carry on your job (Section 172 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG), gesetze-im-internet.de (in German), paragraph 2).

The referral clause (paragraph 3) matters particularly here. It can let an insurer treat work in administration, teaching or expert assessment as reasonable. Read exactly which referral your tariff contains. The guide Medical student disability insurance: timing and rules explains the timing and rules in a related field.

Employed or self-employed: what changes for health insurance?

If you run your own practice or work self-employed, you are not insured through an employer. Voluntary members of statutory health insurance pay contributions on at least EUR 1,318.33 per month (2026). This gives a calculated minimum contribution of EUR 222.80 per month (assumption: reduced rate of 14.0 percent plus additional rate of 2.9 percent, source GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on contribution figures, status 1 January 2026 (in German)).

Whether this suits you depends on income, family and cover. There is no general recommendation. Compare offers on contribution base and scope of benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a collective agreement for employed veterinarians?

No general collective agreement for veterinarians is documented. Ask the practice or clinic whether one applies. In the public sector the situation may differ. Check your employment contract to see whether a collective agreement applies.

How much leave do I get by law?

The statutory minimum leave follows the Federal Leave Act. With a five-day week it is at least 20 working days per year (Section 3 of the Federal Leave Act (BUrlG), gesetze-im-internet.de (in German)). Your contract may give more, but not less.

Do I need disability insurance if I take over a practice?

A practice is an asset built with your work capacity. Whether disability insurance gives the right cover depends on your case. What matters is that the insurer describes your profession correctly, including the activities in the practice and the referral clause.

What changes if I change jobs after a few years?

A job change alters pay, allowances and the contribution base. You stay compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance as long as you earn below the limit. The notice periods in your contract decide when a change can take effect.

Next steps

  1. Compare job offers by the whole contract, not only by the monthly total.
  2. Ask about on-call and emergency duty rules and how they are paid.
  3. Calculate gross pay with the contributions above and check net pay with the official calculator.
  4. Read the referral clause of your disability insurance and compare it with the job profile of a veterinarian.
  5. Clarify your health insurance before a job change or self-employment.
