Definition of the health insurance income limit
The health insurance income limit (Versicherungspflichtgrenze), also called the annual earnings threshold (Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze), is the income above which employees are no longer compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV). It decides whether you stay in the GKV as an employee or can switch to private health insurance (PKV). For students, it matters mainly when questions of return or switching arise.
