Where is BKK Diakonie open?

According to the GKV-Spitzenverband insurer list, BKK Diakonie is open in 14 federal states: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein. The student page names no regional restriction and stresses that students of all subjects are welcome. The homepage gives an address in Bielefeld.

What does BKK Diakonie cost as a student?

The insurer does not offer its own student tariff, but the statutory student health insurance. For our calculation, we use the assessment base of 855 € per month. The insurer does not name an age limit or its own contribution formula on its student page.

  1. Basic contribution: 10.22% of 855 € equals 87.38 €.
  2. Additional contribution: 3.80% of 855 € equals 32.49 €.
  3. Health insurance: 87.38 € plus 32.49 € equals 119.87 €.
  4. Long-term care insurance: 30.78 € under 23 or with a child, 35.91 € childless from 23.
  5. Total: 150.65 € or 155.78 € per month.

The basic contribution for students equals seven tenths of the general contribution rate of 14.6%. One percentage point of additional contribution corresponds to 8.55 € per month for students. From the 23rd birthday, the childless long-term care surcharge of 5.13 € per month applies.

Family insurance until 25

Until your 25th birthday, you can be covered as a family member through a statutorily insured parent, as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € per month, or 603 € for a mini-job (§ 10 SGB V). The insurer’s page does not mention family insurance. Our glossary entry on family insurance during studies explains more, currently available in German.

Student insurance ends at 30

Compulsory student insurance ends under § 5 SGB V at the end of the semester in which you turn 30. The insurer names no separate age limit on its page, so the law applies. You can then stay on as a voluntary member. A minimum assessment base of 1,318.33 € applies, which is one third of the reference value of 3,955 €.

  1. Health insurance: 14.0% plus 3.80% additional contribution equals 234.66 €.
  2. Long-term care insurance: 47.46 € with a child, 55.37 € childless.
  3. Total: 282.12 € with a child, 290.03 € childless.

With higher income, the contribution is calculated on that income up to the contribution assessment ceiling. If you later take up employment, you become compulsorily insured there.

Working students and mini-jobs

The insurer does not name rules for working students or mini-jobs on its page. The statutory limits apply. What matters are weekly hours and the amount earned.

SituationEffect
Working student up to 20 hours per weekStudent insurance continues.
Employment permanently above 20 hoursCompulsory insurance as an employee may apply and takes precedence over student insurance.
Mini-job up to 603 € per monthNo effect on student insurance.

For borderline cases such as night work, semester breaks or several jobs, the insurer decides individually.

Bonus and additional benefits

The insurer names several benefits on its pages. The information comes from the insurer, may change and differs in part between the pages. The current information from the insurer is decisive. Statutory benefits such as medical treatment, hospital care, medicines and preventive care are largely the same at all statutory insurers. Differences mainly concern the additional contribution and voluntary offers.

  • Bonus program: up to 100 € per year for health-conscious behaviour, according to the student page. The page names no conditions.
  • Mindfulness budget: 620 € per year for prevention and self-care, according to the homepage. Insureds decide for themselves how to use it. The student page gives different information on this budget.
  • Dental cleaning: up to 80 € per year.
  • Prevention courses: up to 200 € per year, twice 100 €.
  • Osteopathy: up to 240 € per year, at most 80% of the invoice amount.
  • Travel vaccinations abroad: 100% of the costs. Skin cancer screening from age 18.
