Source and statusAdditional contribution from the GKV-Spitzenverband health fund list, status 24 October 2026. Contributions calculated by us on the basis of the 2026 reference figures. The BAHN-BKK student page states 118.59 € for health insurance and 30.78 € or 35.91 € from 23 for care insurance, retrieved 25 October 2026, no update date stated.

These amounts apply to compulsory statutory student insurance. The additional contribution is set by each fund and can change, usually at the turn of the year. The rate that BAHN-BKK itself publishes is the binding one. Its page does not state the additional contribution, so that figure comes from the health fund list.

The page does not describe in detail which students can join. It refers to an online membership declaration. For an overview of all funds, see the hub Health funds for students: all funds at a glance (in German).

What does BAHN-BKK cost for students?

BAHN-BKK does not offer a freely selectable student tariff. It provides statutory student health insurance (KVdS, Krankenversicherung der Studierenden) under one fixed formula. The contribution is based on a fixed assessment basis of 855 € a month. This amount consists of 475 € basic need and 380 € housing allowance (§ 236 SGB V) and applies even if you do not receive BAföG.

This is how the 2026 contribution is calculated:

  1. Assessment basis: 855.00 € a month (475 € basic need plus 380 € housing allowance).
  2. Basic contribution: 10.22 % of 855.00 € gives 87.38 €. The rate is seven tenths of the general contribution rate of 14.6 %.
  3. Additional contribution of BAHN-BKK: 3.65 % of 855.00 € gives 31.21 €.
  4. Health insurance: 87.38 € plus 31.21 € gives 118.59 €. The same amount appears on the fund’s page.
  5. Care insurance: 30.78 € (3.6 %) under 23 or with a child, 35.91 € (4.2 %) from 23 without children.
  6. Total: 149.37 € under 23 or with a child, 154.50 € from 23 without children.

One percentage point of additional contribution corresponds to 8.55 € a month for students. The table in Additional contributions 2026 for all health funds (in German) shows how the rate compares with other funds.

What applies at BAHN-BKK from 25 and from 30?

Family insurance ends at 25

Until your 25th birthday you can be covered as a student through a parent who is a member of a statutory fund. BAHN-BKK also states the age limit of 25 on its page. This applies as long as your regular earnings in 2026 do not exceed 565 € a month. For a mini job the limit is 603 € (§ 10 SGB V). The age limit can only be extended by periods of statutory or voluntary service, not by years of study. From your 23rd birthday, the care surcharge for people without children also applies, which is 5.13 € more a month. More is in the glossary Family insurance during studies (in German).

Student insurance ends at 30

Compulsory student insurance ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (§ 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V). Since 2020 there is no maximum number of semesters, the age limit decides. BAHN-BKK names the age limit of completing the 30th year of life on its page. Details are in Health insurance as a student over 30 and Studying at 30 (both in German).

When student insurance ends, you usually remain a voluntary member of BAHN-BKK, unless you can prove other cover. A minimum assessment basis then applies. This is how the 2026 minimum contribution is calculated:

  1. Minimum assessment basis: 3,955.00 € reference figure divided by 3 gives 1,318.33 € a month.
  2. Health insurance: reduced rate 14.0 % plus additional contribution 3.65 % gives 17.65 %, which is 232.69 €.
  3. Care insurance: 47.46 € (3.6 %) with a child, 55.37 € (4.2 %) without children.
  4. Total: 280.15 € with a child, 288.06 € without children.

At higher incomes the contribution is based on the actual income, up to the contribution assessment ceiling of 5,812.50 € a month.

Which extra benefits and bonus schemes does BAHN-BKK list for young members?

BAHN-BKK lists bonus programmes on its pages. We reproduce the details here without comment. The amounts come from the fund and may change. The page does not name students as a separate target group.

  • Health bonus (Gesundheitsbonus): the page names the target group as “everyone from age 16” and a bonus of 30 € each for the first three activities. Rewarded are activities from eight health areas, such as sport, courses and preventive care. Source: BAHN-BKK, bonus programmes (German), retrieved 25 October 2026 (no update date stated).
  • Mother bonus (Mamabonus): the page names the target group as “pregnant women and young mothers” and 50 € as a cash bonus or 100 € as an earmarked bonus. Source: BAHN-BKK, bonus programmes (German), retrieved 25 October 2026 (no update date stated).

The student page also mentions the optional tariff Back2You (deductible tariff), without amounts.

How do you switch to BAHN-BKK?

You register with BAHN-BKK, and BAHN-BKK handles the cancellation with your previous fund. The deadlines are set by § 175 SGB V:

  1. Right to choose: you can choose your fund freely. As a student you must make the choice within two weeks of the start of compulsory insurance at the latest.
  2. Application: apply with BAHN-BKK. Notification by the new fund replaces the cancellation, and the previous fund confirms it.
  3. Notice period: membership ends at the close of the second calendar month after the notice. If you give notice in January, you switch on 1 April.
  4. Binding period: you are generally bound to the new fund for twelve months. This does not apply if membership ends by law, for example when family insurance ends.
  5. Special right of termination: if your fund raises the additional contribution, you can leave earlier. The twelve-month binding period then does not apply.

The guide Switching health insurance as a student (in German) describes this in detail.
