A student cost calculator helps you turn fixed costs, the semester fee and living expenses into a realistic monthly budget for studying in Germany. This guide is not an online tool but a calculation scheme with a worked example. You insert your own figures and get a sum you can rely on.
Kurz beantwortet: Your monthly need consists of rent, health insurance, one sixth of the semester fee, the broadcasting fee and living costs. In the worked example with assumptions this comes to about 1,070 euros a month (status: October 2026). The BAföG maximum rate for students under 25 living away from their parents is 855 euros in 2026, and half of it is an interest-free loan.
Key points at a glance
- Start with fixed costs such as rent and insurance before you plan leisure and extras.
- The semester fee is due once per semester. Divide it by six to get the monthly amount.
- Student health insurance (KVdS, Krankenversicherung der Studierenden) is paid to your health insurer, not through the semester fee.
- Plan a buffer of about ten percent so unexpected costs do not empty your account.
- The BAföG maximum rates are upper limits. What you actually receive depends on income and assets.
Which costs belong in the calculation?
Many students underestimate yearly costs. They do not fall due every month, but they still belong in the budget. Check your notices and contracts to make the sum correct. These are the main building blocks.
- Rent including utilities, or the warm rent from your offer.
- Health insurance: nothing if you are family insured, otherwise the KVdS.
- The semester fee of your university, which in many cases includes the semester ticket.
- The broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), which is charged per apartment.
- Living costs for food, clothing, study materials, phone and internet.
How do you calculate your monthly need?
The scheme is simple. You enter each item per month, convert semester and yearly amounts, and add everything up. The example below uses assumptions. Replace them with your real figures.
- Enter the warm rent from your tenancy agreement or offer.
- Check your health insurance. Family-insured students pay nothing, all others pay the KVdS.
- Divide the semester fee by six, because a semester usually covers six months.
- Add the broadcasting fee and your living costs.
- Add ten percent on top as a buffer.
| Item | Amount per month | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Warm rent | 450 euros | Assumption, replace with your rental offer |
| Health and long-term care insurance (KVdS) | 142.96 euros | Average 2026, without childless surcharge, assumption: additional contribution 2.9 percent |
| Semester fee | 61.58 euros | 369.50 euros for winter term 2026/27 divided by six (example from the University of Münster) |
| Broadcasting fee | 18.36 euros | Beitragsservice, per apartment |
| Living costs | 300 euros | Assumption for food, clothing, study materials, phone |
| Subtotal | 972.90 euros | Sum of the items above |
| Buffer of ten percent | 97.29 euros | Assumption |
| Total monthly need | about 1,070 euros | Sum including buffer |
The health insurance line uses average values. The basic contribution of 87.38 euros, the average additional contribution of 24.80 euros and the long-term care contribution of 30.78 euros add up to 142.96 euros (contribution basis 855 euros a month). Your own health insurer may charge a different additional contribution.
How much BAföG is realistic?
BAföG is the most important public support for studying in Germany, but the maximum rates are not average values. The table shows the 2026 maximum rates by age and housing situation. Whether you receive them depends on the income and assets of your parents and on your own assets.
| Situation (maximum rate 2026) | Amount per month | Composition |
|---|---|---|
| under 25, living away from parents | 855 euros | 475 euros basic need plus 380 euros housing allowance |
| 25 to 29, living away from parents | 992 euros | As above plus 102 and 35 euros health and long-term care supplements |
| 25 to 29, living with parents | 671 euros | Basic need, 59 euros housing allowance and supplements |
Half of the support is granted as an interest-free loan and half is a grant. A government draft for a BAföG reform provides a higher housing allowance of 440 euros from the summer term 2027. This is not yet law and does not automatically apply to current approvals.
Which costs are often forgotten?
The semester fee is due twice a year, but health insurance is due every month. Many students forget the broadcasting fee even though it is charged per apartment. For study materials, clothing or a laptop, it helps to plan a yearly amount and divide it by twelve.
If you live with your parents, the calculation changes significantly. The BAföG housing allowance is then 59 euros instead of 380 euros, and rent usually does not apply. With your own flat, you need to plan for utilities, deposit and moving costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a rule of thumb for the monthly need?
There is no fixed figure, because rent and living costs vary widely between cities. The BAföG maximum of 855 euros serves as an orientation for students living away from home. Your own need can be higher or lower.
Is the semester fee charged every month?
No. The fee is set per semester. For monthly planning, divide it by six. You will find the exact amount on the fee notice of your university, because the totals differ considerably between universities.
Do I have to pay the KVdS myself?
Yes, unless you are family insured or covered otherwise. The contribution goes to your health insurer and is separate from the semester fee. The contribution basis for the KVdS is 855 euros a month in 2026 (section 236 SGB V).
Does BAföG exempt me from the broadcasting fee?
Not automatically. BAföG recipients who do not live with their parents can apply for an exemption. The conditions and forms are available from the Beitragsservice.
What to do next
- Calculate all fixed monthly costs once with your real figures.
- Divide the semester fee and yearly items by six or twelve and enter them as monthly amounts.
- Compare the total with your available income from work, BAföG or support from your parents.
- Check whether you can apply for support before you set your budget.
