Hardly anyone thinks about disability insurance at school. Yet that stage of life is often the cheapest moment to take out a contract. This guide explains what speaks for an early start, what speaks against it and how to prepare a decision while you are still at school.

Short answer: An early start can pay off, because your state of health, your age and your choice of occupation affect the contract, and a later contract can be harder to get. Minors need the consent of their legal guardians. Whether a tariff suits you depends on your career path, your health and the terms. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points in Brief

  • Contracts concluded early often come with better starting conditions. Health, age and occupation all play a role.
  • In principle a contract is possible even in the teenage years, but it then needs the consent of the parents.
  • The career path is often still open at school, so the tariff should cover a broad range of occupations.
  • Starter offers with a low entry premium are common. Check how the premium develops afterwards.
  • A decision made without looking at health questions and terms achieves little. Compare classification and exclusions before you sign.

Why an Early Contract Is Often Attractive

The Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg highlights disability insurance specifically for trainees, students and people starting their careers, and presents the future insurability guarantee as a way to raise cover later. The FAQ on disability insurance by the Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz (dated January 2020) notes that your state of health, your age and your choice of occupation play a role when a contract is concluded. Those who start early usually get the more favourable starting conditions, as long as their health is good.

The advantage grows when you consider pre-existing conditions. A new diagnosis in adolescence can make a later contract harder to obtain or more expensive. A contract that already exists is not affected by this, as long as it runs and the premiums are paid.

What Changes Legally for Minors

Minors cannot conclude contracts without restriction. Under § 107 of the German Civil Code (BGB), they need the consent of their legal guardian for declarations of intent that do not merely confer a legal advantage on them. For disability insurance, the parents should therefore usually be involved, in writing and before the application.

In practice this means agreeing with your parents who signs the contract, who pays the premium and who can be contacted in the event of a claim. When you come of age, the situation changes. Make sure you know your contracts and documents by then.

Early or Later? The Differences at a Glance

AspectEarly start (at school)Later start (studies or work)
Health assessmentUsually easier if health is goodPre-existing conditions or new diagnoses can lead to surcharges or exclusions
Choice of occupationOften still open, so the tariff should be broadCareer path is usually clearer and classification more concrete
PremiumStarter offers can be cheaper at firstPremium is usually higher, depending on age
ReferralThe referral clause matters more for the later occupationThe benchmark is usually known
CommitmentLong term and premiums for many yearsLife situation is easier to foresee

Worked Example: What Does an Early Start Cost?

Assumption: at 17 you take out disability insurance with a premium of 25 euros a month. At 24 the same cover would cost 40 euros a month. All figures are assumptions and serve only as illustration. The table shows what the early start costs up to age 24.

ItemEarly start (assumption)Later start (assumption)
Monthly premium25 euros40 euros, from age 24
Premiums up to age 242,100 euros (7 years times 12 times 25 euros)0 euros

The calculation shows only part of the decision. If an illness develops in those seven years that makes a later contract difficult, the early contract may be worth more than its higher premium. Conversely, you pay for protection you do not yet need. The decision therefore depends on your state of health and your budget.

It is worth running both scenarios with real offers rather than looking only at the entry premium. Pay particular attention to how high the premium rises after a starter phase and which benefits remain the same over the years.

Choosing an Occupation

A career wish is not yet a commitment. The insurer, however, classifies you according to the occupation you state in the application. Ask how the tariff classifies occupations in your environment, and compare several routes, for example a degree and a vocational training. A tariff that covers only one route well may turn out to be unsuitable later.

Health Questions Answered Honestly and Completely

When you apply, you must answer questions about your health and pre-existing conditions truthfully and completely. This duty to disclose follows from the German Insurance Contract Act (§ 19 VVG). If you leave out information, you risk problems in a claim, up to a refusal of benefits. This applies particularly to young people who hardly remember individual doctor visits.

It helps to collect documents such as medical reports, test results and medication lists and keep them ready for your answers. Also ask whether an anonymous risk enquiry is possible before you make a concrete application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take out disability insurance as a pupil at all?

In principle, yes. Minors, however, need the consent of their legal guardians under § 107 of the German Civil Code (BGB). Whether an insurer accepts minors and on what terms is set by the tariff.

Do my parents pay the premium?

That is a question for the family and the contract. The policyholder is the person who concludes the contract. Paying through a parent is often possible, but it should be clearly arranged with the insurer and within the family.

Do I have to decide on my career now?

No, but the tariff should cover your probable path. Ask how it classifies different occupations and get the answers in writing before you decide.

What if I change my mind later?

A change of career can affect classification and premium. Keep the information from your application and report changes early. A future insurability guarantee can help adjust the cover later, if your tariff provides for it.

What to Do Now

  1. Agree with your parents whether an early start suits your family and who signs the contract.
  2. Think about your probable career path and note two or three options.
  3. Compare the tariffs on classification, exclusions, starter conditions and how the premium develops.
  4. Ask for written answers on health questions and occupational classification before you submit an application.
