Future Insurability Guarantee: Raise Your Disability Pension

A future insurability guarantee (Nachversicherungsgarantie) can raise your disability pension at certain events without a new health check. Here is how it works.

If you take out disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) as a student, the pension you choose is usually modest because your budget is small and your income is low. Your needs often grow considerably after you start working. That is what the future insurability guarantee (Nachversicherungsgarantie) is for: it lets you increase your cover later without the insurer assessing your health again.

Short answer: A future insurability guarantee lets you raise your disability pension at certain life events without a new health check. Which events count, which deadlines apply and how large the increase can be is set only in the policy terms of your contract. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points in Brief

  • The guarantee is an agreement within the contract, not a statutory duty of the insurer.
  • It allows an increase of the disability pension at defined events, without a new health assessment.
  • Typical events are life changes such as marriage, the birth of a child or the start of a permanent job. Your specific tariff is decisive.
  • There is usually a reporting deadline after the event. If you miss it, you may lose the right to the increase.
  • A higher pension costs more contributions. The increase is usually priced according to your age at the time of the increase.

What Is the Future Insurability Guarantee?

Disability insurance pays out if you can no longer practise your last occupation, in the form you practised it, because of illness, injury or a decline in strength that goes beyond normal ageing, and this is expected to be permanent, fully or partly. This definition is set out in § 172 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG). You fix the amount of the benefit in the contract, usually as a monthly disability pension.

The guarantee is an additional contract option. It allows you to raise the pension later, even if your health has changed in the meantime. Without this clause, a later increase is often possible only after a new health check, which can lead to higher premiums or exclusions. The Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg describes the guarantee as a way to increase the disability pension under certain conditions without a new health check, and highlights it specifically for trainees, students and people starting their careers. For a general overview of cover for students, see the large German guide on disability insurance for students (in German).

Which Events Trigger an Increase?

The list of events is set in the policy terms, not in law. Typical triggers are life events that can increase the need for cover. Frequently listed are:

  • Marriage or registration of a civil partnership
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Completion of a vocational training course or a degree
  • Taking up a first permanent job or self-employment
  • Purchase of a property or taking out a larger loan

Check carefully whether your event appears on the list. A pay rise is not automatically a trigger, and a change of employer is not enough in every tariff. If something is unclear, ask in writing before you apply for an increase.

Which Deadlines and Limits Apply?

The guarantee is bound to deadlines. Usually you must report the event within a set period and apply for the increase. How long that period is and how the application works is governed by your contract. There is often also an upper limit, for example a percentage of the original pension or a maximum amount per event.

Worked Example: When Does an Increase Make Sense?

Assumption: you take out disability insurance at age 22 with a monthly pension of 900 euros, because the budget as a student is tight. After you start working, you expect a monthly need of 1,800 euros, which the pension should cover in an emergency. The table shows the gap with and without an increase. All amounts are assumptions.

ItemAssumption in euros per month
Need after starting work1,800
Disability pension at the start of the contract900
Gap in an emergency without increase900
Increase through the future insurability guarantee (assumption)600
Remaining gap after the increase300

Whether an increase of 600 euros is possible depends on your tariff. The guarantee does not replace a needs calculation. You do not have to use the full increase, but you should know your room for manoeuvre before the event happens.

What Does the Increase Cost?

A higher pension also means a higher premium. The increase is usually calculated on the basis of your age at the time of the increase, and the offer shows the exact figure. The advantage is that you lock in an early, cheaper start and add the part you need later without new health questions. The drawback is that each increase adds to your contributions, and they must fit into your budget for many years.

Why Check the Guarantee Early?

Your state of health, your age and your choice of occupation all affect the terms when a contract is concluded. The Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz points this out, although its information dates from January 2020. Those who start early usually secure better starting conditions. The future insurability guarantee builds on that advantage, but it does not replace a later review of your needs. That is why it pays to look at the contract when you start your studies and again when you enter working life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add the future insurability guarantee later?

Usually not without further ado. The guarantee is part of the tariff. Check before you sign whether it is included, because later it can usually only be added with a new contract.

Do I have to report every pay rise to the insurer?

Only if the pay rise is listed as a trigger in your terms. A pay rise is not automatically a reason for an increase. Read the list carefully before you report anything, and keep a record of what you have reported.

Does the guarantee still apply if I am already unable to work?

In general, no. The guarantee is meant to protect you before an insured event occurs. Once a claim has been triggered, an increase is generally excluded. The details are in the terms.

Does changing my degree affect the guarantee?

That depends on your terms. A change of subject can alter how your occupation is classified, which may affect the premium or the benefit. Report changes early and ask whether they affect the guarantee.

How do I find out which events apply to my contract?

Look at the policy terms, usually in the section on future insurability or adjustment of benefits. Also ask the insurer in writing and keep the answer.

What to Do Now

  1. Read your policy terms and look for future insurability, adjustment of benefits or an increase option.
  2. Note the events, the reporting deadline, the upper limit and whether a health check is waived for the increase.
  3. Calculate your need after you start work, using a monthly budget with assumptions for rent, insurance and living costs.
  4. If anything is unclear, ask in writing or have your contract reviewed personally. Academycon offers personal advice, see how we work (in German).
  5. Put the event and the reporting deadline in your calendar so that you do not miss them.
