Trainee pay in Bavaria depends on two things: the allowances paid during your Referendariat (teacher or legal traineeship) and the health aid (Beihilfe) that covers part of your medical costs. This guide sets out the figures that could be verified and shows where you should check the details before you start.
Short answer: During your Referendariat in Bavaria you receive trainee allowances (Anwärterbezüge). According to the dbb salary table, the amount for pay grade A 13 is 1,795.21 euros gross per month, valid from 1 October 2026 and subject to publication in the official gazette. As the standard rate, health aid covers 50 percent of eligible costs if you have no children. Last updated: October 2026.
Key points
- Trainee allowances in Bavaria are 1,795.21 euros (A 13) or 1,763.44 euros (A 12) gross per month, according to the dbb salary table.
- These amounts apply from 1 October 2026. The earlier amounts have not been verified.
- As the standard rate, health aid (Beihilfe) covers 50 percent of eligible costs if you have no children.
- In the overviews reviewed, a flat-rate health aid option (pauschale Beihilfe) is not provided for Bavaria. The regulation itself is decisive.
- Your appointment letter shows which pay grade applies to you.
How high are trainee allowances in Bavaria?
Trainee allowances are your pay during the period of preparatory service. The amount depends on your entry grade, the pay band you are placed in. The figures below come from the dbb salary table for Bavaria, last updated October 2026, subject to publication in the official gazette:
| Entry grade | Trainee allowance, gross per month | Valid from |
|---|---|---|
| A 13 | 1,795.21 euros | 1 October 2026 |
| A 12 | 1,763.44 euros | 1 October 2026 |
“Gross” means before tax and deductions. Whether you receive A 13 or A 12 depends on your classification. It has not been verified whether all primary school teacher trainees in Bavaria are classified under A 12, so ask at your appointment which line applies. For a net calculation, use the income tax calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (in German).
How does health aid work during the Referendariat in Bavaria?
Civil servants are entitled to health aid (Beihilfe) when they are ill, and as a rule they are not insured under statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV). Under § 6 para. 1 no. 2 of the Social Code Book V (SGB V), civil servants are exempt from compulsory insurance if they are entitled to continued pay and health aid under civil service rules. Whether you are appointed as a civil servant on probation (Beamter auf Widerruf) or in a public-law training relationship depends on Bavarian state law. Your appointment letter tells you which applies.
Health aid covers only part of your costs. For civil servants on probation without children, the standard rate is 50 percent, set out in the Bavarian health aid regulation (Bayerische Beihilfenverordnung). You cover the rest through private health insurance or pay it yourself.
Example: how the 50 percent rate works
Assumption: you have no children and submit an eligible treatment bill of 200 euros. The calculation looks like this:
- Health aid pays 50 percent of 200 euros, which is 100 euros.
- You pay the remaining 100 euros yourself or receive it from your health insurance.
- Check beforehand whether the treatment is eligible. Not every service is reimbursed.
- Submit the bill to your health aid office on time. The deadlines are in the application form.
What you finally pay depends on the size of your treatment costs and on what your insurance covers. More on the process is in our guide on health aid during the Referendariat (in German).
Which health insurance suits the Referendariat in Bavaria?
With 50 percent health aid, you need cover for the other half. Many trainees choose a trainee tariff of private health insurance (Anwärtertarif PKV), which is designed for the training period. Whether that makes sense depends on pre-existing conditions, age, family plans and the benefits that matter to you. The monthly premium alone tells you little.
Our overview of the basics of statutory and private cover is available in the German guide on health insurance in the Referendariat. A personal assessment of your situation is available through Academycon.
Is there a flat-rate health aid option in Bavaria?
Some states offer trainees a flat-rate health aid (pauschale Beihilfe) as an alternative, which you choose once. In the overviews reviewed, this option is not provided for Bavaria. The state regulation is binding, so a request to your health aid office is worthwhile. The German guide on flat-rate health aid for trainees lists the states that offer it.
Do the Bavarian figures apply to legal trainees?
The table above refers to trainee pay in Bavaria. Legal trainees do not automatically receive the same amount if their legal status is set up differently. The responsible office named in your appointment letter gives you the exact figure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the net trainee pay in Bavaria?
I do not give a net figure, because income tax depends on your marital status, allowances and other deductions. The income tax calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance lets you enter your own numbers. Health insurance contributions for civil servants work differently from those for employees, so consider them separately.
Do I receive more pay if I have children?
With children you usually receive a family supplement (Familienzuschlag), and the health aid rate can rise. The amount is set out in Bavaria’s salary table and depends on the number of children. In the example above I deliberately assumed no children.
Does the 50 percent rule apply to every trainee?
No. 50 percent is the standard rate for civil servants on probation without children. With children the rate can be higher. The health aid office assesses your situation based on your appointment and family status.
When do trainee allowances change in Bavaria?
The figures in this overview apply from 1 October 2026, and they were lower before. States adjust their salary tables from time to time. Plan with the figures valid on your start date and check the current table before you begin.
Do I have to apply for health aid for every bill?
Yes. Health aid works through an application to your health aid office. Submit original receipts with the required details and keep to the deadlines. The office then decides which costs are reimbursed.
What you should do now
- Check your appointment letter and note the pay grade that applies to you.
- Compare your trainee allowance with the current Bavarian salary table before you plan your budget.
- Ask your health aid office about the rate and whether a flat-rate option is available to you.
- Clarify your health insurance before you start, and compare trainee tariffs by benefits, not only by premium.
