How are you insured in Liechtenstein?

EHIC and statutory health insurer

The European Commission lists Liechtenstein, alongside the EU states, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, among the countries where the EHIC is issued and accepted. The card is on the back of your health insurance card. According to the Commission you are entitled to treatment that becomes medically necessary during your stay, and treatment follows the rules of the country you visit. Students expressly receive the card. The German Federal Foreign Office does not mention the EHIC on its Liechtenstein page but describes medical care as very good. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) writes on its country page that, under the EU social security rules, insured people can claim health insurance benefits in the host country.

Ask your statutory health insurer to confirm before you leave what protection applies in Liechtenstein. According to the European Commission the card does not cover planned treatment that can wait until you return, such as most dental treatment.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

According to the European Commission the EHIC does not pay for transport home after serious illness or an accident. The German Federal Foreign Office strongly advises travel health insurance with repatriation cover and asks whether the cover includes a rescue flight to Germany. Without adequate cover you bear the costs yourself. According to the page, bills sometimes have to be paid or advanced before discharge, and a hospital can obtain a refusal to let you leave if bills are open. More is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and Work and Travel (in German) and in the guide Private health insurance during a study abroad semester (in German).

There are no compulsory vaccinations. The page asks for up-to-date standard vaccinations under the STIKO schedule, especially measles, and names tick-borne encephalitis vaccination for a longer stay. If you have pre-existing conditions it advises travel medical advice.

Do you need a visa for Liechtenstein?

The German Federal Foreign Office page for Liechtenstein names the documents for entry by German citizens, namely passport, provisional passport, identity card, provisional identity card within its validity, and children’s passport (status 25 October 2026). According to the page the documents may have expired up to a year ago, but the local authorities advise entering with valid documents. There is no customs border between Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The page names no rule on visa, residence or registration for studies. The country’s diplomatic mission can tell you authoritatively whether and which visa you need for studies in Liechtenstein. We give no rule of our own, because we have no official source for one. The DAAD writes on its country page that international applicants can receive a short-stay permit for a semester or an academic year. According to the page this permit does not entitle you to student jobs, and during the semester break work is allowed for up to three months per calendar year. The DAAD page carries no update date, so clarify the procedure with the host university. The German diplomatic mission is the embassy in Bern, and in emergencies the honorary consul in Balzers.

According to the German Federal Foreign Office no travel warning applies to Liechtenstein (page status 25 October 2026). The crime rate is low, and pickpocketing is possible in busy places and on public transport. In the mountains, heavy snow, avalanches and landslides threaten depending on the weather, and the page advises checking current weather and avalanche reports and keeping to marked paths. The blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.8 per mille.

What does a study abroad semester in Liechtenstein cost?

Tuition fees

The University of Liechtenstein gives 950 CHF per semester for EU and EEA nationals and for people with a Matura from these countries, otherwise 1,250 CHF. The page has no information on exchange students. The university charges further fees for individual services separately but names no amounts. The DAAD names about 750 CHF per semester on its older country page, as of March 2019, so the amounts differ.

According to the Erasmus+ programme guide, Liechtenstein is one of the associated third countries that take part in the programme in full. Ask your International Office and the host university whether a fee exemption like the one for Erasmus+ applies to your exchange semester.

Living costs

The University of Liechtenstein expects costs of about 1,500 CHF per month but stresses that they vary a lot from person to person. The guide values are rent including utilities about 680 CHF, food about 450 CHF, health insurance about 100 CHF, clothing and hygiene about 100 CHF, leisure about 150 CHF and phone about 20 CHF. According to the page, private liability insurance costs about 85 to 150 CHF per year. The page has no publication date. Convert at the current exchange rate into euros.

On its country page the DAAD gives a guide sum of about 1,200 CHF per month and 600 to 800 CHF for a room, both as of March 2019. According to the DAAD the university arranges private rooms, and a hall of residence is possible. These older values are below the university’s figures, and the amounts may have changed since. The DAAD scholarship rate list does not include Liechtenstein, so there is no benchmark from it.

Funding through Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

For Auslands-BAföG the Studierendenwerk Augsburg is responsible according to the DSW assignment. Eligibility and amounts are in the guide Auslands-BAföG eligibility, amounts and supplements (in German). Under the BAföG foreign supplement ordinance a monthly foreign supplement may apply for training outside the EU and Switzerland where local purchasing power is lower than at home, and Liechtenstein belongs to neither. The amount follows a percentage set by the Federal Foreign Office. On top come a travel supplement of 250 euros for the outward journey and the same for the return within Europe, demonstrably necessary tuition fees up to 5,600 euros for at most one year, and a supplement to health insurance costs against proof of cover.

Worked example

For five months, the university’s expected costs give 5 times 1,500 CHF, so 7,500 CHF. That includes health insurance of about 100 CHF a month, as the university states. The semester fee of 950 CHF or 1,250 CHF comes on top only if it applies to your exchange semester. Convert at the current rate into euros. The total is a guide, not a commitment.
