Where is BKK exklusiv open?
According to the GKV-Spitzenverband insurer list, BKK exklusiv is open in six federal states: Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein. Students with a place of residence or study in this area can be admitted. If your residence and place of study are outside these states, the insurer is generally not an option for you. We did not check the opening area on the insurer’s own website, because it could not be retrieved for our research.
What does BKK exklusiv cost as a student?
The insurer does not offer its own student tariff, but the statutory student health insurance. For our calculation, we use the fixed assessment base of 855 € per month. The rules are the same for all statutory insurers.
- Basic contribution: 10.22% of 855 € equals 87.38 €.
- Additional contribution: 3.49% of 855 € equals 29.84 €.
- Health insurance: 87.38 € plus 29.84 € equals 117.22 €.
- Long-term care insurance: 30.78 € under 23 or with a child, 35.91 € childless from 23.
- Total: 148.00 € or 153.13 € per month.
The basic contribution for students equals seven tenths of the general contribution rate of 14.6%. One percentage point of additional contribution corresponds to 8.55 € per month for students. From the 23rd birthday, the childless long-term care surcharge of 5.13 € per month applies.
Family insurance until 25
Until your 25th birthday, you can be covered as a family member through a statutorily insured parent, as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € per month, or 603 € for a mini-job (§ 10 SGB V). Whether you are covered as a family member or must insure yourself depends on your age, your income and the insurance status of your parents. Our glossary entry on family insurance during studies explains more, currently available in German.
Student insurance ends at 30
Compulsory student insurance ends under § 5 SGB V at the end of the semester in which you turn 30. You can then stay on as a voluntary member. A minimum assessment base of 1,318.33 € applies, which is one third of the reference value of 3,955 €.
- Health insurance: 14.0% plus 3.49% additional contribution equals 230.58 €.
- Long-term care insurance: 47.46 € with a child, 55.37 € childless.
- Total: 278.04 € with a child, 285.95 € childless.
With higher income, the contribution is calculated on that income up to the contribution assessment ceiling. If you later take up employment, you become compulsorily insured there.
Working students and mini-jobs
What matters are weekly hours and the amount earned. The statutory limits apply, and they are the same for all statutory insurers.
| Situation | Effect |
| Working student up to 20 hours per week | Student insurance continues. |
| Employment permanently above 20 hours | Compulsory insurance as an employee may apply and takes precedence over student insurance. |
| Mini-job up to 603 € per month | No effect on student insurance. |
For borderline cases such as night work, semester breaks or several jobs, the insurer decides individually.
Bonus program and additional benefits
The offers of BKK exklusiv are on the homepage. We could not retrieve them as of 25.10.2026, so we do not repeat details here.
Statutory benefits and choosing an insurer
The statutory benefits such as medical treatment, hospital care, medicines and preventive care are largely the same at all statutory insurers. This also includes aids and travel costs, if the statutory requirements are met. Differences mainly concern the additional contribution, the opening area and voluntary offers. If you compare insurers, consider the opening area, service and offers alongside the additional contribution, rather than relying on one figure alone. You can check which offers suit your situation on the insurer’s website.
How do you switch to BKK exklusiv?
A switch runs through the new insurer. The deadlines are set by § 175 SGB V.
- You register with the new insurer. It takes over the cancellation with your previous insurer.
- Membership ends at the end of the second calendar month after notice. If you give notice in January, you switch on 1 April.
- In principle, you are bound to the new insurer for twelve months.
- If the additional contribution rises, a special right of termination applies.
If you are already a member of another insurer, you report the switch through the new insurer. A separate cancellation with your previous insurer is generally not needed. The new insurer checks the membership and informs you about the status.
