Who is insured as a student?
If you are enrolled at a university, you are subject to statutory health insurance, provided you have no other coverage that takes priority. Insurance begins with enrolment and ends with de-registration or when the age limit is reached. Usually, the enrolment certificate is enough to register. The insurer checks the requirements on a case-by-case basis.
Whether you are instead covered as a family member through a parent depends on your age, your income and the insurance status of your parents. If you meet the conditions, you are not insured twice. Family insurance takes precedence over your own insurance as long as it applies.
What does BKK Akzo Nobel Bavaria cost as a student?
The insurer does not offer its own student tariff, but the statutory student health insurance. Its website describes the contribution assessment base as the BAföG rate. For our calculation, we use the fixed assessment base of 855 € per month. The website itself does not state euro amounts.
- Basic contribution: 10.22% of 855 € equals 87.38 €.
- Additional contribution: 3.39% of 855 € equals 28.98 €.
- Health insurance: 87.38 € plus 28.98 € equals 116.36 €.
- Long-term care insurance: 30.78 € under 23 or with a child, 35.91 € childless from 23.
- Total: 147.14 € or 152.27 € per month.
The basic contribution for students equals seven tenths of the general contribution rate of 14.6%. The additional contribution is added on top and is set individually by each insurer. One percentage point of additional contribution corresponds to 8.55 € per month for students. From the 23rd birthday, the long-term care contribution is higher for those without children, because the childless surcharge applies.
Family insurance until 25
Until your 25th birthday, you can be covered as a family member through a statutorily insured parent, as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € per month, or 603 € for a mini-job (§ 10 SGB V). From the 23rd birthday, the childless long-term care surcharge of 5.13 € per month applies. More on this is in our glossary entry on family insurance during studies, currently available in German.
Student insurance ends at 30
The insurer names completion of the 30th year of life as the limit. Compulsory insurance ends under § 5 SGB V at the end of the semester in which you turn 30. You can then stay on as a voluntary member. A minimum assessment base of 1,318.33 € applies, which is one third of the reference value of 3,955 €.
- Health insurance: 14.0% plus 3.39% additional contribution equals 229.26 €.
- Long-term care insurance: 47.46 € with a child, 55.37 € childless.
- Total: 276.72 € with a child, 284.63 € childless.
With higher income, the contribution is calculated on that income up to the contribution assessment ceiling. If you take up employment after student insurance ends, you become compulsorily insured there, and contributions from the employment relationship then apply.
Working students and mini-jobs
The insurer does not name its own rules for side jobs for students. The statutory limits apply. What matters are weekly hours and the amount earned.
| Situation | Effect |
| Working student up to 20 hours per week | Student insurance continues. |
| Employment permanently above 20 hours | Compulsory insurance as an employee may apply and takes precedence over student insurance. |
| Mini-job up to 603 € per month | No effect on student insurance. |
For borderline cases such as night work, semester breaks or several jobs, the insurer decides individually. The insurer does not give further details on its website.
Bonus program and offers
The insurer names a bonus program and further offers. The information comes from the insurer and may change. Statutory benefits such as medical treatment, hospital care, medicines and preventive care are largely the same at all statutory insurers. Differences mainly concern the additional contribution and voluntary offers.
- Bonus program: 15 € for the check-up, 15 € for cancer screening and 10 € for a vaccination. For all insureds, 10 € each per year for a dental check-up, a prevention course and exercise offers. Exercise requires an uploaded proof. Applications must be received by 30.06. of the following year. Source: BKK Akzo Nobel Bavaria, bonus program, retrieved on 25.10.2026.
- Health courses: up to 260 € per year according to the homepage, which does not state conditions. Source: BKK Akzo Nobel Bavaria, homepage, retrieved on 25.10.2026.

- If the additional contribution rises, a special right of termination applies.
