| Source and status | Additional contribution from the GKV-Spitzenverband health fund list, status 24 October 2026. Contributions calculated by us on the basis of the 2026 reference figures. The student page of AOK that we checked (status 14 September 2026, German) does not state amounts and refers to a postcode search. |
These amounts apply to compulsory statutory student insurance in the AOK area. The additional contribution is set by each fund and can change, usually at the turn of the year. The rate that AOK Rheinland/Hamburg itself publishes is the binding one.
AOK funds are organised regionally. The AOK responsible for you is the one covering your place of residence or place of study, not automatically the fund you know from home. For an overview of the AOK contributions and areas, see the existing guide AOK student health insurance (in German).
What does AOK Rheinland/Hamburg cost for students?
AOK Rheinland/Hamburg does not offer a freely selectable student tariff. It provides statutory student health insurance (KVdS, Krankenversicherung der Studierenden) under one fixed formula. The contribution is based on a fixed assessment basis of 855 € a month. This amount consists of 475 € basic need and 380 € housing allowance (§ 236 SGB V) and applies even if you do not receive BAföG.
This is how the 2026 contribution is calculated:
- Assessment basis: 855.00 € a month (475 € basic need plus 380 € housing allowance).
- Basic contribution: 10.22 % of 855.00 € gives 87.38 €. The rate is seven tenths of the general contribution rate of 14.6 %.
- Additional contribution of AOK Rheinland/Hamburg: 3.29 % of 855.00 € gives 28.13 €.
- Health insurance: 87.38 € plus 28.13 € gives 115.51 €.

The table in Additional contributions 2026 for all health funds (in German) shows how the rate compares with other funds. The overview of all funds is available in the hub Health funds for students: all funds at a glance (in German).
What applies at AOK Rheinland/Hamburg from 25 and from 30?
Family insurance ends at 25
Until your 25th birthday you can be covered as a student through a parent who is a member of a statutory fund. This applies as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € a month, or 603 € for a mini job (§ 10 SGB V). The AOK also states the age limit of 25 and the income limit of 565 € on its page. The age limit can only be extended by periods of statutory service or voluntary service, by twelve months at most, not by years of study. After that, your cover as a student continues with the amounts calculated above. From your 23rd birthday, the care surcharge for people without children also applies, which is 5.13 € more a month. More on contribution-free co-insurance is in the glossary Family insurance during studies (in German).
Student insurance ends at 30
Compulsory student insurance ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (§ 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V). Since 2020 there is no maximum number of semesters, the age limit decides. An extension is possible if the type of training or personal reasons justify exceeding it, for example in the second educational pathway or when raising children. The AOK also names the end with the semester of the 30th year of life and an extension in certain cases. The local AOK checks whether an extension applies, case by case and semester by semester. Details are in Health insurance as a student over 30 (in German) and Studying at 30 (in German).
When student insurance ends, you usually remain a voluntary member of AOK, unless you can prove other cover. A minimum assessment basis then applies. This is how the 2026 minimum contribution is calculated:
- Minimum assessment basis: 3,955.00 € reference figure divided by 3 gives 1,318.33 € a month.
- Health insurance: reduced rate 14.0 % plus additional contribution 3.29 % gives 17.29 %, which is 227.94 €.
- Care insurance: 47.46 € (3.6 %) with a child, 55.37 € (4.2 %) without children.
- Total: 275.40 € with a child, 283.31 € without children.
At higher incomes the contribution is based on the actual income, up to the contribution assessment ceiling of 5,812.50 € a month.
What applies to working students and mini jobs at AOK Rheinland/Hamburg?
A working student job or mini job usually changes nothing in your insurance with AOK as long as your studies come first. What counts are weekly hours and earnings. The AOK describes the rules on its page in German (status 14 September 2026).
| Situation | Effect on health insurance |
|---|---|
| Working student with at most 20 hours a week during the semester | Student insurance continues. More hours are allowed in the lecture-free period. |
| Permanent employment of more than 20 hours a week | Compulsory insurance as an employee starts from the first day. |
| Mini job with earnings above 565 € but below 603 € a month | If family insurance is excluded, student insurance is possible. |
Additional hours in the evening, at night or at weekends are possible if the employment is limited to at most 26 weeks a year. All jobs are added together for this. The details and cases with semester breaks or several employers are explained in Working student: the 20-hour rule (in German).
Which extra benefits and bonus schemes does AOK Rheinland/Hamburg list for young members?
AOK Rheinland/Hamburg lists an optional tariff on its pages. We reproduce the details here without comment. They come from AOK and may change.
- AOK-Bonus-Plus optional tariff (Wahltarif): a deductible tariff with a basic bonus. The basic bonus is paid at the start of the year if no benefits are claimed. Deductibles and the basic bonus depend on gross income. The page gives no euro amounts. Additional bonuses for preventive care, vaccinations or a gym depend on the regional AOK. Source: AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, AOK-Bonus-Plus tariff (German), page status 30 September 2026.
The page does not name students as a separate target group. The statutory range of benefits is largely the same at all statutory funds, while the articles of association govern the voluntary offers.
How do you switch to AOK Rheinland/Hamburg?
You register with AOK, and AOK handles the cancellation with your previous fund. The deadlines are set by § 175 SGB V:
- Right to choose: you can choose your fund freely. As a student you must make the choice within two weeks of the start of compulsory insurance at the latest.
- Application: apply with AOK. Notification by the new fund replaces the cancellation, and the previous fund confirms it.
- Notice period: membership ends at the close of the second calendar month after the notice. If you give notice in January, you switch on 1 April.
- Binding period: you are generally bound to the new fund for twelve months. This does not apply if membership ends by law, for example when family insurance ends.
- Special right of termination: if your fund raises the additional contribution, you can leave earlier. The twelve-month binding period then does not apply.
The guide Switching health insurance as a student (in German) describes this in detail.
