Definition of the child benefit transition period
The child benefit transition period (Übergangszeit) is the time between two training stages, for example between leaving school and starting university, or between a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. Within it, child benefit generally continues if your training carries on without a break. The maximum length is fixed by law.
Value (as of 20 October 2026)
| Figure | Value | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum length of the transition period | up to 4 months | applicable law | Family Benefits Office information leaflet, section 32 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) |
Example
You finish your Abitur (school-leaving exam) in July and start university in October. The three months fall within the transition period, so your child benefit entitlement continues. If there is a five-month break between your bachelor’s and master’s, the transition period is no longer enough.
