Studying in Regensburg combines an old town with UNESCO World Heritage status and two universities: the University of Regensburg and the OTH Regensburg (Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule, a university of applied sciences). The semester fee of the University of Regensburg consists of only two items for winter semester 2026/27, which keeps it manageable. This guide shows the amounts, the deadline and what remains open for the OTH.
Short answer: The semester fee of the University of Regensburg for winter semester 2026/27 totals 208.00 euros: 82.00 euros for the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk) and 126.00 euros for the semester ticket in the Regensburg Transport Association (Regensburger Verkehrsverbund, RVV). Re-enrolment and payment were due by 17 July 2026. Source: the university’s re-enrolment page, page version 30 July 2026. Stand: October 2026.
Key points at a glance
- Total amount according to the university: 208.00 euros for winter semester 2026/27, of which 82.00 euros for the student services organisation and 126.00 euros for the ticket.

How high is the semester fee at the University of Regensburg?
The university’s re-enrolment page lists two items and no others, for example no separate administrative fee. The detailed analysis is in our guide Semester fee University of Regensburg 2026/27: 208 euros and ticket.
| Item | Amount per semester | Share (own calculation) |
|---|---|---|
| Student services contribution | 82.00 euros | about 39 percent |
| Semester ticket (RVV) | 126.00 euros | about 61 percent |
| Total | 208.00 euros | 100 percent |
Calculation example (assumption: both semesters cost 208.00 euros): 416.00 euros in the academic year, of which 252.00 euros for the ticket. The ticket works out to 21.00 euros per month.
Which deadlines and cut-off dates applied?
| Deadline | Date according to the university |
|---|---|
| Re-enrolment and full bank transfer, winter semester 2026/27 | by 17 July 2026 |
| Removal from the register for non-re-enrolment at the end of summer semester 2026 | 30 September 2026 |
| Validity of the updated UR card | until 31 March 2027 |
The deadline has now passed. If you missed it, contact the student records office (Studierendensekretariat) immediately. The general consequences are described in our guide Semester Fee Deadline: Re-enrolment and Consequences. For summer semester 2027 the page does not state an amount.
Who is covered by the ticket and who gets a refund?
| Feature | Information from the student services organisation |
|---|---|

| Validity | lecture periods and semester breaks, for students of the University and the OTH Regensburg |
| Guest students | cannot purchase the semester ticket |
| Refund | for severely disabled people entitled to free local public transport, application through the advice service of the student services organisation |
Other RVV tickets end at Sinzing/Riegling. If you commute to Neustadt an der Donau, you have only benefited from the student ticket since this semester. How the ticket compares with a Germany ticket (Deutschlandticket) is explained in our guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs.
Where do you live in Regensburg and what does it cost?
Many students compete for the same rooms, especially in the old town and near the universities. The most reliable figures are the city’s rent index (Mietspiegel) and the offers of the student services organisation, because they reflect location and furnishing. A guide cannot replace these figures.
- Student dormitory: apply to the student services organisation and observe the application deadlines.
- Shared flat (WG): compare the warm rent, service charges and internet costs together.
- Surrounding area: rooms are cheaper, but plan for travel costs and a ticket.
Example calculation (assumption): 360 euros warm rent and 148 euros for health and long-term care insurance come to about 508 euros per month, before the semester fee, food and study materials.
How does health insurance work for students in Regensburg?
The rules for statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) for students are the same across Germany. The contribution is based on a notional income of 855 euros per month, the figure from the BAföG needs assessment. For students without children aged 23 or older, the calculation with the average additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) looks as follows:
| Position | Euros per month | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance without additional contribution | 87.38 euros | 855 euros times 10.22 percent |
| Additional contribution, average (assumption) | 24.80 euros | 855 euros times 2.9 percent |
| Long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) with childless surcharge (Kinderlosenzuschlag) | 35.91 euros | 855 euros times 4.2 percent |
| Total (assumption) | 148.09 euros | childless, age 23 and over |
Which health insurer suits you depends on its additional contribution and your benefit preferences, not on the location. Anyone living in Regensburg pays the same basic calculation as everywhere else in Germany.
Which universities are there in Regensburg?
The University of Regensburg offers a broad range of subjects with a focus on law, economics and the natural sciences. The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (OTH) is more practice-oriented and offers programmes in engineering, computer science and business. The distinction matters for you because fee rules, re-enrolment and deadlines are set separately for each university.
Which BAföG rates apply in Regensburg?
The rates of the federal student financial aid scheme BAföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz) are the same across Germany. The authority responsible is the training assistance office (Amt für Ausbildungsförderung) that your university names for you. The following amounts have applied since 1 August 2024; the income allowance applies in 2026.
| Benefit | Amount per month | Valid since |
|---|---|---|

A reform is planned but not yet adopted. Check the current position before you apply.
Frequently asked questions
Does the fee also apply at the OTH?
The 208.00 euros is the amount the university charges its students. The OTH has its own regulations and re-enrolment deadlines. According to the student services organisation, the ticket does apply to students of both universities, but check the amount with the OTH directly.
Is the semester ticket valid during semester breaks too?
Yes. According to the student services organisation, it is valid during lecture periods and semester breaks.
What if I missed the deadline of 17 July 2026?
The university states that students who have not re-enrolled are removed from the register at the end of the semester; for summer semester 2026 that was 30 September 2026. Contact the student records office without delay and describe your situation in writing.
How much may I earn from a side job?
A mini-job (Minijob) remains possible up to 603 euros per month in 2026. The minimum wage (Mindestlohn) is 13.90 euros gross per hour. For BAföG, your own earnings above the income allowance of 389 euros per month are taken into account.
What should I check first about health insurance?
Check whether you are covered as a family member or otherwise insured. Only then is it worth looking at the additional contribution of your health insurer.
