Studying in Greifswald requires a semester fee at every university, but the university gives conflicting figures for it. What we can confirm is the housing offer of the Studierendenwerk (student services organisation): the university lists six residences, and the DAAD gives rents for one house. This guide separates what is verified, what is outdated and where you can get current figures.
Short answer: The figures from the University of Greifswald for the semester fee in winter semester 2026/27 contradict each other. The re-registration page gives 127.00 euros for students and 116 euros for doctoral students, a university Instagram post gives 137 euros as the late-period amount including a 10 euro administrative fee. Check with the student administration. A single room in the Ernst-Thälmann-Ring residence costs 232 to 265 euros per month according to the DAAD (undated, retrieved October 2026).
Key points at a glance
- Contradicting figures: the re-registration page gives 127.00 euros (students) and 116 euros (doctoral students), the Instagram post 137 euros (late period, including a 10 euro administrative fee). Check with the student administration.
- Rooms in the Ernst-Thälmann-Ring residence cost 232 to 265 euros per month according to the DAAD, and two connected rooms cost 358 euros. The figures are undated, and both room types showed zero free places.
- The university’s housing leaflet names six student services residences, but it is dated September 2019 and contains no rents.
- For private residences, the AStA (student union) warns against contracts with terms of up to three years.
- According to the leaflet, you can terminate open-ended rental contracts with three months’ notice without giving a reason.
What do you pay per semester in Greifswald?
The re-registration page of the University of Greifswald gives 127.00 euros for students and 116 euros for doctoral students. According to the Studierendenwerk Greifswald, the student services fee rises from 93 to 110 euros from winter semester 2026/27. A university Instagram post gives 137 euros for the late period until August 2026, including a 10 euro administrative fee. According to these figures no semester ticket is included. The numbers do not fully fit together, so the answer of the student administration is decisive before you pay. We do not transfer figures from other universities.
| Item | Where to find it | Status in our research |
|---|---|---|
| Semester fee in total | Notice and re-registration information of the university | contradicting: 127.00 / 116 / 137 euros |
| Share of the Studierendenwerk | Studierendenwerk Greifswald | 110 euros from WS 2026/27 (previously 93 euros) |
| Semester ticket, if included | University of Greifswald | according to these figures not included |
If you plan ahead, ask for the amount for the current semester. Earlier figures only help as a rough guide, because fees change from one semester to the next. To see how to fit the amount into a monthly budget, read Budget planning during your studies (in German).
Student residences in Greifswald: locations according to the leaflet
The leaflet names six locations of the Studierendenwerk. It is dated September 2019, so before you apply, check whether all the locations still exist in the same form and how allocation works today.
| Location according to the leaflet | Note |
|---|---|
| Ernst-Thälmann-Ring 8 to 10 | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
| Makarenkostraße 47 | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
| Wilhelm-Holtz-Straße 4 | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
| Max-Kade-Haus, Hans-Beimler-Straße 9 | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
| Fleischerwiese | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
| Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 11 | Residence of the Studierendenwerk |
According to the leaflet, you should submit your application for a residence place before you receive your admission notice. Rooms are allocated very quickly. The leaflet gives no fixed application date, so you should make your enquiry early.
The leaflet names the Studierendenwerk at Mensa am Schießwall 1 to 4 in 17489 Greifswald, telephone 03834 861730 and the email address [email protected] as the contact point. These details also come from the 2019 leaflet, so check them before you get in touch.
For one of the six houses, the Ernst-Thälmann-Ring 8 to 10, the DAAD dormitory finder lists monthly rents of the Studierendenwerk Greifswald. The listing gives no date and showed zero available places for both room types when we accessed it in October 2026. The values therefore show only the order of magnitude, not a current price.
| Room type (Ernst-Thälmann-Ring 8 to 10) | Rent per month according to the DAAD |
|---|---|
| Single room, 8 to 18 m², shared flat with 3 to 4 tenants | 232 to 265 euros |
| Two connected single rooms, 28 m² | 358 euros |
For the other five houses we have no verified rents. The range fits a residence room in the lower three-digit range, but a comparison with private offers is still needed, because service charges and internet are regulated differently in each contract.
Looking for housing beyond the residences
If you do not get a residence place, pursue several routes at the same time. That way you will not sign the first contract on offer under time pressure. The leaflet names several contact points for this.
The leaflet refers to two housing companies: the WVG, a municipal company at Hans-Beimler-Straße 73, and the WGG, a housing cooperative at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 1. It also names the portals wg-gesucht.de, studenten-wg.de and studenten-wohnung.de, as well as the notice boards in front of the AStA office and in the institutes.
| Topic | What the leaflet says |
|---|---|
| Contract term of private residences | Contracts with terms of up to three years, which are hard to end early. The AStA advises against them. |
| Commission from private landlords | According to the leaflet, usually no commission is due any more under the new legislation. |
| Termination of open-ended rental contracts | Tenants can terminate with three months’ notice without giving a reason. |
| Fraternities and similar associations | Affordable living is possible, but membership may be required. |
Especially with offers that have a long term, it pays to read the contract carefully. Have termination clauses explained to you before you sign, and get help from the AStA if an offer is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be sure of getting a residence place in Greifswald?
No. The leaflet says rooms are allocated very quickly, and the DAAD listing showed zero free places when we accessed it. Plan an alternative and apply as early as possible.
How do I terminate an open-ended rental contract in Greifswald?
According to the leaflet, the notice period for tenants is three months, and you do not have to give a reason. Fixed-term contracts follow other rules, especially private residences with multi-year terms, so read the contract carefully.
Who helps with questions about finding housing?
The Studierendenwerk Greifswald answers questions about the residences. The AStA advises on rental contracts and social matters. According to the leaflet, you can reach the AStA social advice service at Friedrich-Loeffler-Straße 28, by telephone on +49 3834 420 1750 or by email at [email protected]. Check these contact details, as they date from 2019.
Do I need to take a different approach to health insurance in Greifswald?
The place where you study does not change the rules. You can find an overview of contributions and additional contributions in Additional contributions 2026 of all health insurers and what students pay (in German).
