The semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is currently 97.00 euros per semester, according to TUM. You pay it to the Munich student services organisation (Studierendenwerk) and it must arrive in the period set before the semester starts. This guide explains what the amount stands for, how payment works and what TUM says about deadlines.
Short answer: According to TUM, the semester fee at the Munich, Garching and Freising campuses is currently 97.00 euros per semester and goes to the Studierendenwerk München. The page shows no breakdown and no semester ticket. It names no fixed deadline date; what counts is when the payment arrives. Date of the TUM page: 22 October 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- The semester fee is 97.00 euros per semester (TUM, Munich, Garching and Freising campuses, page last changed on 22 October 2026).
- The amount goes to the Studierendenwerk München. The TUM page shows no split into items and no semester ticket share.
- The date the payment is received counts, not the transfer date. Allow three to five working days for the bank.
- For degree programmes with restricted admission, payment must arrive within 14 days of the admission letter.
- The amount for your account is shown in TUMonline, where you can also check that your payment has been booked.
How much is the semester fee at TUM?
TUM states on its page on enrolment and re-enrolment in Munich, Garching and Freising that the semester fee currently amounts to 97.00 euros. It is paid to the Studierendenwerk München every semester before enrolment or re-enrolment. LMU Munich lists 97.00 euros for the winter term 2026/27 as well; see our guide Semester fee at LMU Munich.
| Item | Value according to TUM | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Semester fee per semester | 97.00 euros | Munich, Garching, Freising campuses |
| Recipient | Studierendenwerk München | Fee regulations of the Studierendenwerk are linked |
| Breakdown into items | not shown | Page refers to the Studierendenwerk |
| Semester ticket in the fee | not mentioned | Clarify ticket questions with the transport network and TUM |
| Re-enrolment deadline as a date | not given | Payment “within the designated period” before the semester starts |
TUM runs separate pages for its Heilbronn and Straubing campuses. The content we retrieved there states no amounts, so the 97.00 euro figure applies here only to Munich, Garching and Freising.
How does payment work?
On its fees page, TUM refers to the amount you find in TUMonline for your semester. The payment reference should contain your matriculation number, your name, the semester (TUM gives “26/27WS” as an example) and “TUM Technische Universität München”. If the payment has not appeared in TUMonline after five working days, send the bank transfer receipt to TUM semester fees management.
| Situation | Rule according to TUM |
|---|---|
| Normal re-enrolment | Payment within the designated period before the semester starts |
| Programmes with restricted admission | Payment received within 14 days of the admission letter |
| Relevant date | Date of receipt, not transfer date |
| Bank processing | Allow three to five working days |
| Enrolment | Complete only once the payment has arrived |
| TUM Asia | Fee is transferred from Singapore, no separate payment |
Assumption: a semester has six months. Then 97.00 euros equal about 16.17 euros per month. Setting aside that amount each month helps you to avoid a gap when the payment period begins.
How early should you transfer the money?
TUM allows three to five working days for the bank and requires the payment to be received. Assumption: your payment period ends on a Friday. The last safe transfer day is then no later than the previous week, because five working days of processing plus one working day as a buffer make six working days. Anyone who transfers on the due date itself risks the money arriving after the deadline.
International transfers can take longer. The TUM page gives no separate processing time for them. In that case, build in more of a buffer and keep the receipt so that you can show proof of payment after the deadline.
What applies to the semester ticket?
The TUM pages we retrieved mention no semester ticket in the fee. You therefore plan your local transport separately. For an overview of the Deutschlandticket and semester tickets, see our guide Affordable travel as a student (in German).
What tuition fees apply to non-EU students?
Tuition fees are not part of the semester fee. According to TUM, from the winter term 2027/28 non-EU students pay 2,300 or 3,400 euros for a bachelor’s degree and 4,600 or 6,800 euros for a master’s degree. Students already enrolled keep their original rate. Which of the two amounts applies to you is stated on the TUM fees page.
