A doctorate in the humanities (Promotion in den Geisteswissenschaften) is often written without a permanent post, with a scholarship, with teaching assignments or from your own resources. That is why funding, fixed-term rules and health insurance should be considered together rather than separately.
Short answer: Humanities doctoral candidates are funded by a university post, a scholarship, teaching assignments or their own resources. A scholarship is not earned income, and a paid post usually creates compulsory insurance as an employee. The research cost allowance of the scholarship foundations is 100 euros per month (October 2026). Last updated: October 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- Scholarship: the maximum rates of the scholarship foundations are up to 1,750 euros basic scholarship per month (October 2026), plus allowances.
- Teaching assignment: fees are not a post. Whether they create compulsory insurance depends on the arrangement, so clarify it with your health insurer.
- Fixed-term contracts: up to six years before the doctorate under § 2 (1) sentence 1 WissZeitVG (Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia Act), if the post serves your qualification.
- Writing phase: many funding schemes end before submission, so plan for it.
- Figures: Destatis reports 28,800 completed doctorates in the 2025 examination year (October 2026). A figure for the humanities alone is not reported in the sources used here.
How do you fund a doctorate in the humanities?
A university post is not the only route in the humanities. Scholarships, teaching assignments, mixed funding and your own resources are often combined. An overview of posts and scholarships is available in Promotionsstelle oder Stipendium.
| Route | What it means | Health insurance |
|---|---|---|
| University post | Fixed-term contract, often with teaching and administrative duties | Compulsory insurance as an employee if you are paid |
| Doctoral scholarship | No earned income, allowances for research and family | Student insurance or voluntary insurance, check in your case |
| Teaching assignment for a fee | Payment per course, no post | Depends on the arrangement, clarify with your health insurer |
| Own resources | Part-time work or savings | Student insurance if the conditions are met, otherwise voluntary insurance |
Scholarship, teaching assignment and writing phase: where the money ends
In the humanities a typical bottleneck is the transition: the scholarship runs out while the submission is still pending. It is worth comparing terms, allowances and possible extensions early.
| Type of funding | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Doctoral scholarship | Term, possibility of extension, allowances | Fixed term, funding stops at the end |
| Teaching assignment | Weekly teaching hours, form of contract | The form of contract affects insurance |
| Own resources | How long the money lasts | Decides how much time remains for writing |
Costs for archive trips or specialist literature are not covered everywhere. According to the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the research cost allowance of the scholarship foundations is 100 euros per month (October 2026). Plan any other costs separately.
What applies to the term if you hold a scholarship or a teaching assignment?
The Academic Fixed-Term Contracts Act governs employment contracts. It does not apply to a scholarship; there the award notice determines how long payments run. A teaching assignment is either a fee contract or an employment relationship depending on its form, and the act covers only the second. For posts at a university, section 2(1) applies: up to six years before the doctorate (sentence 1) and up to six years after it (sentence 2), each with a term that suits the qualification (sentence 3).
If you switch between a scholarship and a post, look at sentence 2: doctoral periods without employment can affect the permitted duration after the doctorate. Your university’s personnel office can tell you how this is calculated in your case. An average duration for doctorates in the humanities is not documented in the sources used here.
What does cover cost if only the scholarship runs?
A doctoral scholarship does not count as earnings. For student insurance it does not affect the amount of the contribution, because a fixed basis of 855 euros per month applies (one thirtieth of the BAföG need rate for students living away from their parents, section 236 SGB V). The breakdown for 2026 under assumptions (childless, aged 23 or over, average additional contribution):
| Item | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Health insurance, base contribution | 87.38 euros |
| Additional contribution, average | 24.80 euros |
| Long-term care, with childless surcharge | 35.91 euros |
| Total | 148.09 euros |

What to check in the humanities in particular
- Monograph or cumulative thesis: many faculties require a monograph. Check the doctoral regulations before you set your timeline.
- Teaching assignment: clarify in writing whether you receive the fee as a service or as employment. This also determines your health insurance.
- Archives and sources: travel and copying costs are a separate item. Plan them in advance so they do not crowd out writing time.
- Writing time: a scholarship with a fixed term does not protect against delays. Set milestones and record them in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I stay in student insurance with a scholarship?
That depends on your enrolment and on when the doctorate starts. The Techniker Krankenkasse states that student insurance is possible only if the doctorate starts before you complete your master, diploma or state examination. Whether a scholarship changes your status in an individual case is decided by your health insurer.
Does a teaching assignment count as employment?
That depends on how it is set up. A fee for individual courses works differently from a post with fixed pay. Have your health insurer confirm which insurance applies before the contract starts.
How long can my post be fixed-term?
Before the doctorate, § 2 (1) sentence 1 WissZeitVG allows up to six years if the post serves your own qualification. After the doctorate, the same six-year framework applies. The term must also be appropriate for the qualification.
What happens to my insurance after the doctorate?
Your time as a student ends with your degree, and student insurance no longer continues. Voluntary insurance or private insurance are then possible routes. A new paid post creates compulsory insurance as an employee again.
How to proceed now
- Work out how long your funding lasts and add the writing phase.
- Read the doctoral regulations of your faculty and decide between a monograph and a cumulative thesis.
- Clarify with your health insurer which insurance applies with a scholarship or teaching assignment.
- Compare scholarship providers and their allowances before you apply.
- Enter the end of the scholarship and the submission deadline in your calendar.
