A doctorate in business and economics (Promotion in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften) often runs inside a doctoral programme with courses, or it is written alongside a job. Both routes shape your funding, your fixed-term rules and whether you are insured as an employee or as a student.
Short answer: A PhD candidate in business and economics is funded by a chair post, a scholarship, a job held alongside the doctorate or their own resources. A paid post usually creates compulsory insurance as an employee. The scholarship maximums of the scholarship foundations reach up to 1,750 euros basic scholarship per month (October 2026). The most important points at a glance
- Doctoral programme: courses, selection procedures and interim assessments can be part of the doctorate. Check what your faculty requires.
- Doctorate alongside a job: your employment contract determines your insurance, not your doctoral status.
- Fixed-term contracts: up to six years before the doctorate under § 2 (1) sentence 1 WissZeitVG (Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia Act), if the post at a university serves your qualification.
- Insurance: after your master with a full-time job you are insured as an employee, not through student insurance (KVdS).
- Empirical work: if you collect survey data, data protection rules apply regardless of how you are funded.
How do you fund a doctorate in business and economics?
The routes differ mainly in whether you work at a chair or write the doctorate alongside a job in a company, an association or consulting. An overview of posts and scholarships is available in Promotionsstelle oder Stipendium.
| Route | What it means | Health insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant post at the chair | Fixed-term contract with teaching and research duties | Compulsory insurance as an employee if you are paid |
| Doctorate alongside a job | Employment contract in a company, doctorate at the university | Compulsory insurance as an employee if you are paid |
| Doctoral scholarship | No earned income, maximum 1,750 euros basic scholarship (October 2026) | Student insurance or voluntary insurance, check in your case |
| Own resources | Savings or income from other sources | Student insurance if the conditions are met, otherwise voluntary insurance |
Doctorate alongside a job: what belongs in the contract
If you write your doctorate alongside a post, two things must be kept apart: the university’s agreement to supervise you and a work agreement that gives you time for the dissertation. Without the second, the dissertation often stalls, even when the salary is right.
| Point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Working hours | Weekly hours and time for the doctorate, in writing |
| Release time | Whether and when you are released for research phases, conferences or writing time |
| Course credits | Which courses your doctoral regulations require and whether the employer pays for them |
| Exploitation | Who owns data, models and publications produced in your day job |
Ask your supervisor for a written supervision agreement. It helps when the requirements of the faculty and of the employer change over time.
When does the WissZeitVG apply to a doctorate in business and economics?
Whether the fixed-term limits of the Academic Fixed-Term Contracts Act apply depends on who your employer is. An average duration for business and economics is not documented in the sources used here, so only the legal framework is given.
| Situation | Fixed-term rules |
|---|---|
| Assistant post at a university | WissZeitVG: up to six years before the doctorate (section 2(1) sentence 1), then up to six further years (sentence 2) |
| Employment contract with a company, association or consultancy | WissZeitVG does not apply; the general rules of the Part-Time and Fixed-Term Employment Act (TzBfG) apply |
| Scholarship | No employment contract; the term is set in the award notice |
At a university the term must suit the intended qualification (sentence 3), and for each child under 18 in your care the limit extends by two years (sentence 4). The version on gesetze-im-internet.de is authoritative; check it before you sign.
What do you pay if you have no position during your doctorate?
Without employment with earnings, many are left with student or voluntary insurance. For student insurance the insurer does not calculate on your income but on 855 euros per month, one thirtieth of the BAföG need rate for students living away from their parents (section 236 SGB V, 2026). A calculation for 2026, assuming childless, aged 23 or over, average additional contribution:
- 855 euros times 10.22 percent: 87.38 euros for health insurance.
- 855 euros times 2.9 percent: 24.80 euros average additional contribution.
- 855 euros times 4.2 percent: 35.91 euros for long-term care including the surcharge for childless people.
- Sum of the three items: 148.09 euros per month.
The rates come from the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet (status 1 January 2026). Your insurer’s additional contribution is shown in its contribution overview.
What to check in business and economics in particular
- Empirical data: surveys with personal data need a legal basis and a data protection concept. Clarify this with the faculty before you collect data.
- Fees: some doctoral programmes charge participation fees. Check whether they apply and who pays them.
- Publications: whether your faculty requires a monograph or accepts a cumulative thesis based on journal articles determines your timeline.
- Employment: a post outside the university can bring duties that clash with the doctorate. Check working hours and confidentiality.
Frequently asked questions
Am I still student-insured after my master with a full-time job?
No. With paid employment you are usually insured as an employee, and student insurance is then no longer an option. According to the Techniker Krankenkasse, a doctorate started after the master or diploma degree does not allow student insurance either, and voluntary insurance applies instead.
Can I combine a doctoral scholarship with a part-time post?
That depends on the rules of the scholarship provider. Many programmes do not exclude a parallel job but expect time for the scholarship itself. Ask the provider before you sign a contract and get the answer in writing.
How does a doctorate alongside work at a consultancy affect my insurance?
The contract with the company decides. Paid employment usually creates compulsory insurance as an employee. Only marginal or short-term employment follows other rules, which your health insurer checks.
Do I have to start my doctorate before my master to stay in student insurance?
According to the TK, student insurance comes into consideration only if the doctorate begins before you finish your master, diploma or state examination. After that, voluntary insurance applies. Your health insurer confirms where the line falls in your case.
How to proceed now
- Check whether your faculty requires a doctoral programme with courses and which credits you need.
- Have working hours, release time and exploitation rights confirmed in writing in your employment contract.
- Ask your health insurer before you sign and keep the answer in writing.
- Plan the submission around your working hours and the fixed-term rules.
- Enter deadlines and extension dates in your calendar.
