What applies to students in Germany?
According to Google’s German help page, the offer applies to students at a university in a country where Google AI Plus and AI Pro are supported. According to Google, the exceptions are Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia. Germany is not on this list.
Pay attention to the country information. According to Google’s help, the twelve-month offer for AI Pro for students applies only in the United States.
How does Google check student status?
Google uses the service SheerID for this. You enter your university and confirm your status with a university email address. The general verification guide Student verification with SheerID and similar services (in German) explains how it works.
How to activate the offer
- Open one.google.com/ai-student and sign in with a personal Google account.
- Choose the offer, that is the AI Plus trial or the bundle with AI Pro.
- Confirm your status through SheerID with your university email address.
- Complete the subscription. You need an accepted payment method for this.
- Then check in your Google account which plan is active and until when the trial runs.
What limits does the offer have?
The trial runs for twelve months. According to the help page, Google then converts it automatically into a regular paid subscription. You are notified beforehand. Put the date in your calendar so you can decide in time whether you want to continue.
The page does not name a redemption deadline. Check during activation whether the offer is still available to you.
If you switch to another extended trial, the current one ends. An AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, by contrast, continues until the end of its billing period.
When does the offer not apply?
- You are a member of a family group. You must leave the group first.
- Your subscription runs through a third party, Pixel Pass or Google Fi.
- You are signed in with a different Google account than when you started the SheerID check. Then an error message often appears when you redeem the offer.
- You study in a country that is not eligible. The list includes Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia.
- No accepted payment method is stored.
What happens after your studies?
The offer depends on your status as a student. Whether and how it continues after de-registration is shown on Google’s page. Plan the regular price before you decide on an extension. For how to sort out subscriptions when your student status ends, see When student status ends (in German).
What you should keep in mind during your studies
An AI assistant does not replace your own work. Before each use, check the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) of your university. How much the rules differ is shown in AI rules at universities (in German).
Do not enter personal data, research data or unpublished texts that you are not allowed to share. Data protection with AI tools at university (in German) explains what happens to your inputs. Always check AI answers yourself, because they can be wrong or invented.
