Studying in Trier means assessing three costs correctly: the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag), the rent and your health insurance. The city lies close to the Luxembourg border, which matters above all for side jobs. This guide shows which figures are documented and where the gaps are.
Short answer: The University of Trier lists 371.80 euros for the winter semester 2026/27 on its page (retrieved October 2026): 129 euros for the student services organisation, 16 euros for the student body and 226.80 euros for the semester ticket. Re-registration runs from 15 June to 15 September. Health insurance costs about 143 to 148 euros per month (assumption, see below).
Key points
- Winter semester 2026/27: 371.80 euros according to the university page, including 226.80 euros for the semester ticket. The amount on your re-registration is binding.
- Winter semester 2025/26: 369.80 euros, made up of the student services contribution, the semester ticket, the student body contribution and the student ID card.
- Private student dormitories in Trier list rents of 170 to 584 euros (as of July 2025), depending on the house and furnishing.
- Rents of the student services organisation in Trier could not be verified.
- If you work in Luxembourg, clarify which social security rules apply before the contract starts.

For winter semester 2026/27 it gives 371.80 euros in total: 129.00 euros student services organisation, 16.00 euros student body and 226.80 euros semester ticket (retrieved October 2026). For comparison, a university document for winter semester 2025/26 for first-time and new enrolments, dated 5 May 2025, lists 369.80 euros.
| Item | Winter semester 2025/26 |
|---|---|
| Student services contribution | 129.00 euros |

| Total | 369.80 euros |
Source: University of Trier, document on the student services contribution, dated 5 May 2025. The items add up to 369.80 euros in winter semester 2025/26. Other universities show a ticket share of 226.80 euros for the winter semester 2026/27. Whether this applies in Trier too is not verified. Assumption: spread over six months, 369.80 euros is 61.63 euros a month. Replace this figure with the amount in your re-registration.
What does housing cost in Trier?
We could not verify rents of the student services organisation in Trier. The university lists private student dormitories with their prices in a document for exchange students (as of July 2025). These are not averages for the city but figures from individual providers.
| Dormitory | Rent according to the document | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cusanushaus | 170 to 245 euros | Single room, furnished, no internet, shared kitchen and bathroom |
| Regenbogen-Viertel | 280 to 320 euros plus 75 to 80 euros utilities | Minimum rental period of 12 months |
| Am Weidengraben | From 330.50 euros all-in | Internet included |
| Am Trimmelter Hof | 340 euros | Single apartment, deposit of 680 euros |
| Olewig | 375 euros all-in | Electricity and internet included, deposit of 900 euros, minimum rental period of 12 months |
| Robert-Schuman-Allee | 464.50 euros partly furnished, 584 euros fully furnished, both all-in | Guarantor required |
The range shows one thing above all: a comparison only works with the all-in rent, including furnishing, internet and deposit. Worked example (assumption): if you pay 375 euros all-in in the Olewig house, the semester fee of 371.80 euros adds about 61.97 euros per month, so 436.97 euros in total before insurance and food.
What applies if you work in Luxembourg?
Trier is close to Luxembourg. If you work there alongside your studies, the European rules on coordinating social security (Regulation (EC) No 883/2004) apply. Which state is responsible depends on your place of residence and on the scope and type of work. A binding answer comes from your health insurer and the pension insurance provider, not from a general calculation. Ask before the contract starts, because clarifying this can take weeks. For side jobs in general, see Student Side Job: Where to Look and What to Check.
Which health insurance applies to students in Trier?
First check whether you are family insured (Familienversicherung). This is possible during training up to your 25th birthday, if your total income does not exceed 565 euros a month (2026), or 603 euros for a mini-job (Minijob) (§ 10 SGB V). Otherwise you are compulsorily insured through student health insurance (Krankenversicherung der Studierenden).
The calculation runs in three steps: 855 euros times 10.22 percent gives 87.38 euros, the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent adds 24.80 euros, and long-term care insurance adds 30.78 euros up to age 22 or 35.91 euros from age 23 without a child. That makes 142.96 or 148.09 euros a month (as of 1 January 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband; contribution assessment base under § 236 SGB V). Your additional contribution may differ from the average.
Whether private cover suits you depends on health, career goals and life planning. An exemption from compulsory insurance is possible only within three months of the start of the obligation, requires entitlement to other cover and cannot be revoked (§ 8 SGB V). The trade-offs are covered in PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation, and a personal assessment is offered by Academycon (in German).
How does BAföG (federal training assistance) work?
For students living away from home up to age 24, BAföG covers at most 855 euros of need a month, made up of a 475 euro basic amount and a 380 euro housing allowance. From 25 to 29 years it is up to 992 euros (as of January 2026, Deutsches Studierendenwerk). Half of the support is an interest-free state loan. The BAföG office responsible for your university handles the application. For the planned housing allowance of 440 euros from the summer semester 2027 (draft, not passed), see BAföG Reform 2027: What Is Changing and When.
Frequently asked questions
Is a semester ticket included in the semester fee?
Yes. According to the university page, the semester ticket is included in winter semester 2026/27 at 226.80 euros. In winter semester 2025/26 it was 208.80 euros.
Is a dormitory place worth it?
That depends on the all-in rent, the minimum rental period and the deposit. Compare the total costs, not only the base price.
Do I have to pay the fee during a leave of absence?
The university’s regulations decide this. A binding answer comes from the student records office (Studierendensekretariat) before re-registration.
What happens to my health insurance after my studies?
Student health insurance ends with your studies. Follow-up cover depends on employment and income, so plan the switch early.
What to do now
- Open your re-registration and note the amount. Check on the university’s fee page which items it contains.
- Compare dormitories by all-in rent, minimum rental period and deposit.
- Clarify your insurance status and note the three-month deadline for an exemption.
- Before taking a job in Luxembourg, ask your health insurer and pension insurance provider.
