Studying in Siegen calls for an exact cost calculation, because the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) has changed noticeably within a year and a half. The University of Siegen lists four items for the winter semester 2026/27, including the Germany semester ticket. This guide compares the figures with the summer semester 2025 and points out the contradictions in the dormitory rents.
Short answer: The semester fee of the University of Siegen is 393.80 euros in total for the winter semester 2026/27: 226.80 euros for the Germany semester ticket (Deutschlandsemesterticket), 140.00 euros social contribution of the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk), 20.00 euros for the student committee (AStA) and 7.00 euros solidarity contribution. Students who re-registered had to pay by 3 September 2026, otherwise 10 euros were added. Source: University of Siegen, changed 3 September 2026. Last updated: October 2026.
Key points
- Winter semester 2026/27: 393.80 euros. That is 60.40 euros more than the 333.40 euros that the German fee page still shows for the summer semester 2025.
- The Germany semester ticket makes up 226.80 euros, roughly 57.6 percent of the fee.
- The German and English fee pages of the university name different semesters. The current English version is decisive.
- Dormitory rents of the student services organisation in Siegen: 270 to 400 euros (as of June 2023) or 315 to 495 euros all-in (undated directory). The figures do not match.
- International students who take the preparatory course for the DSH language test pay an additional 500 euros.

The English fee page of the university explicitly refers to the winter semester 2026/27 and was last changed on 3 September 2026. The German page still lists the summer semester 2025 (as of 9 January 2025). The comparison shows where the increase comes from.
| Item | Summer semester 2025 | Winter semester 2026/27 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|

Source: University of Siegen, German page (as of 9 January 2025) and English page (changed 3 September 2026). Assumption: spread over six months, 393.80 euros is about 65.63 euros a month, of which 37.80 euros is the ticket. Students who take the DSH preparatory course pay an additional 500 euros, which brings the total to 893.80 euros.
Which deadlines apply to payment?
For the winter semester 2026/27 the university names two dates. Students who re-registered had to pay by 3 September 2026. A late payment added a surcharge of 10 euros. New students should pay as soon as possible, and at the latest by 12 October 2026. For the next semester the deadline named in the re-registration process applies; we have not checked it.
What do dormitories cost in Siegen?
For Siegen, two sources contradict each other. The university’s document “Living in Siegen” lists an average monthly rent of 270 to 400 euros for a furnished room in a student dormitory, plus two months’ rent as deposit (as of June 2023). The DAAD dormitory finder lists 315 to 495 euros a month, including utilities, for the Am Eichenhang 66 complex of the student services organisation Siegen, without a date. The ranges overlap, but their upper limits are roughly 95 euros apart.
| Source | Rent per month | Date |
|---|---|---|
| University of Siegen, Living in Siegen | 270 to 400 euros (furnished room, deposit of two months’ rent) | June 2023 |
| DAAD dormitory finder, Am Eichenhang 66 | 315 to 495 euros all-in | No date |
Worked example (assumption): at 315 euros all-in and a semester fee of 393.80 euros spread over six months, the fixed costs are 380.63 euros; at 495 euros they are 560.63 euros, each before insurance. Ask the student services organisation for current prices and deadlines.
What do health insurance costs look like for students in Siegen?
Family-insured students are not in compulsory insurance. This applies during training up to the 25th birthday and with total income of up to 565 euros a month (2026), or up to 603 euros for a mini-job (Minijob) (§ 10 SGB V). If you have to insure yourself, you pay the contribution calculated below.
Concretely, based on the contribution assessment base of 855 euros, health insurance costs 87.38 euros (10.22 percent). With the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent (24.80 euros), health insurance comes to 112.18 euros, plus long-term care insurance of 30.78 euros up to age 22 or 35.91 euros from age 23 without a child. In total you pay 142.96 or 148.09 euros a month. The basis is the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet (as of 1 January 2026) and § 236 SGB V.
An exemption from compulsory insurance must be applied for within three months of the start of the obligation. It requires an entitlement to other cover and cannot be revoked (§ 8 SGB V). Whether statutory or private cover suits you depends on your health, career goals and planning. The comparison is in our guide PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy the semester ticket separately?

Why does the German page show a different semester?
The German fee page, dated 9 January 2025, has not been updated, whereas the English version was changed on 3 September 2026. The amount in your re-registration is what counts.
