Studying in Bielefeld starts with reading the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag): just under two thirds of it is the Germany semester ticket. The university lists the amounts per semester separately, which makes the development traceable. This guide sets these items beside rent, health insurance and funding.

Short answer: The semester fee of Bielefeld University is 351.65 euros in total for the winter semester 2026/27: 226.80 euros for the Germany semester ticket (Deutschlandsemesterticket), 106.00 euros for the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk) and 18.85 euros for the student body (Studierendenschaft). In the summer semester 2026 it was 333.65 euros. The re-registration deadline for the winter semester ended on 31 August 2026, after which a 10 euro late fee applied. Last updated: October 2026. Key points

  • Winter semester 2026/27: 351.65 euros, of which 64.5 percent is the semester ticket.
  • Compared with the summer semester 2026, the fee rose by 18.00 euros, entirely because of the ticket share (208.80 to 226.80 euros).
  • The deadline depended on the value date (Wertstellung), not on the date of the transfer order.
  • For Bielefeld we have no documented dormitory price. Fixed costs excluding rent come to about 201 to 207 euros a month (assumption).
  • Health insurance and BAföG rates do not depend on the city of study. They apply nationwide.

What does the semester cost in detail at Bielefeld?

The university’s fee page lists three items. The ticket share is the only one that changed between summer 2026 and winter 2026/27. The process of re-registration and the deadline are explained in our guide Semester fee Bielefeld University 2026/27: amount, semester ticket and re-registration deadline.

Compared with the NRW universities that have documented figures for the winter semester 2026/27, Bielefeld sits below Bochum because its contribution to the student services organisation is lower. The comparison is shown in our guide Semester fee Ruhr University Bochum 2026/27. The services of the student services organisations are not compared here.

How does the ticket look per month?

Assumption: a semester has six months. The ticket then works out to 37.80 euros a month, and the whole fee to 58.61 euros. The ticket is a mandatory part of the fee, so compare it with what you would otherwise spend on travel. The guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs helps with this comparison.

By when did you have to re-register?

The re-registration page names 31 August 2026 as the end of the period and identifies the value date as the decisive point. It names no second deadline; a later receipt incurs a late fee of 10 euros. 31 August 2026 was a Monday. For the next period, check the date and amount in the re-registration portal, because we have not checked the figures for the summer semester 2027.

What does housing cost in Bielefeld?

We have no documented rent or dormitory price for Bielefeld, so we do not name one. Instead, calculate the fixed costs excluding rent and add the all-in rent of a concrete offer.

For the housing search, look at the all-in rent, the deposit and the minimum rental period. A guide is available in Affordable student housing: strategy, portals and costs.

Which health insurance applies in Bielefeld?

The rules are the same nationwide. Family insurance (Familienversicherung) takes precedence over compulsory insurance and ends during training at the latest with the 25th birthday. Total income must not exceed 565 euros a month (2026), or 603 euros for a mini-job (Minijob) (§ 10 SGB V).

Your bill is 142.96 euros a month up to age 22, and 148.09 euros otherwise. It consists of 87.38 euros health insurance, 24.80 euros additional contribution (assumption: 2.9 percent) and 30.78 or 35.91 euros long-term care insurance, calculated from 855 euros (GKV-Spitzenverband, as of 1 January 2026; § 236 SGB V).

Whether private cover suits you depends on health, career goals and life planning. An exemption from compulsory insurance is possible only within three months of the start of the obligation, requires entitlement to other cover and cannot be revoked (§ 8 SGB V). The trade-offs are covered in PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation, and a personal assessment is offered by Academycon (in German).

Which BAföG (federal training assistance) rates apply?

The relevant need rates as of January 2026 are 855 euros for students living away from home up to age 24, and 992 euros for the 25 to 29 age group (Deutsches Studierendenwerk). Half of the support is paid as an interest-free loan. For the planned housing allowance of 440 euros from the summer semester 2027 (draft, not passed), see BAföG Reform 2027: What Is Changing and When.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the fee higher in winter than in summer 2026?

The ticket share rose from 208.80 to 226.80 euros. The contributions to the student services organisation and the student body stayed the same.

Where do I check my binding amount?

What to do now

  1. Open the university’s fee page and check which semester you are paying for.
  2. Take the amount, bank details and payment reference from the re-registration email.
  3. Transfer early enough that the value date falls before the deadline.
  4. Calculate the fixed costs excluding rent and add the all-in rent of an offer.
